The Bias by Boon & Baum

We are trying to raise funds to support the making of our installation The Bias for the Slade graduate degree show 2019.

Who is Boon & Baum?

Boon & Baum is the collaborative duo of Joe Boon and Anna Baumgart, currently studying an MFA in sculpture together at the Slade School of Art (UCL). We previously both graduated with Firsts from BA Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins. Drawing upon our fashion background, our work employs the language of fashion to experiment with notions of ‘dressing’ and ‘wearing’.

As individuals living in different genders and sexualities we draw on our unique experiences to explore the world in which we live in together. We perceive Boon & Baum as similar to the warp and weft of a fabric. We work like the bias of a fabric, as an interconnected lattice supported by the horizontal and vertical of the weave, whilst approaching it from an unconventional angle. Themes such as uniform, invisibility, identity and conformity are integral to our work. Our collective slant on the world brings new and unexpected properties to the fore.

The Project

Together, Boon & Baum are investigating the bias in both its meanings...

1. Materially: As a ‘diagonal line or cut across the weave of a fabric.' 2. Theoretically: As a ‘tendency or inclination, especially an irrational preference or prejudice.’

We propose a sculptural intervention on the UCL portico. Our plan is to dress the portico columns with bias cut, striped, outfits in Satinac fabric (from Showtex) see images below for design. We will both be wearing garments that match the dressed architecture, and intend to do performances investigating concepts surrounding The Bias.

Please see below for examples of mini experiments, and two columns we previously dressed in the Slade Rotunda.

Referencing the 1930’s queen of bias Madeleine Vionnet, the dresses will have a number of different design features including godets, cowl necklines, tiers and voluminous shapes. The fabric will be panelled with diagonally striped Satinac fabric in two colours. The stripes depict the 45°angle of the bias, as well as reference the camouflage of the 20th century dazzle ships. We would like to celebrate the history of UCL, with a nod to the diagonal decorations of the UCL fete of 1909 (see image below).

Budget

After speaking to other artists who have used the portico we know that the best solution for installation of our work is with a cherry picker, which will cost £4000 for both installation and deinstallation. Additionally, we have calculated a budget of £1600 for fabric and £600 for fabrication assistance. Please see enclosed budget table for details.

We appreciate that our project is ambitious, but with the success of previous artworks in the portico we are completely committed to making this piece a reality. Any potential contribution would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our proposal.

Kind Regards,

Boon & Baum

Risks and challenges

We have two major challenges, firstly we have a lot of money to raise in order to realise our plan. Secondly, there are only two months until the Slade Degree Show 2019, therefore time is tight. We recognise that these are serious challenges but with your support, we will be able to implement the required means to reach our goal.
