Update #17

Wall Charger Disclaimer

So we see everyone is getting their Boombots in the mail now. Hundreds of boxes have shipped and most everyone with a white early backer Boombot REX received it before this weekend.

Getting some confusion with the cables so here's to clarify. The wall charger comes with a mini USB which was fit for our original Boombot1/2 charging. In each Boombot REX box, it will have the appropriate micro-USB stashed below the speaker in the box.

You may discard the mini-USB, or you can use it to charge your GoPro and put up a really awesome review!

We have a crew working on shipping over the weekend. Monday is a holiday. We hope to be fully caught up on deliveries by next week.

Have an awesome weekend everyone!

Meant to say "The audio has SQ clean and clear mids/highs coming from the front firing speakers"

    7. Missing_small

Creator David Zamora on June 14, 2013

Received mine a couple weeks ago. I must say, the size is nice. Great design and the clip is strong. That is the good. Now to the bad...I am not happy with the audio. I am really hoping that mine is faulty. I haven't had time to let Boombotix know as I've been fairly busy with personal and work matters, but thought I'd start here.

The audio has SQ coming from the front firing speakers, but if there is a hint of bass or anything in the lower frequences, the radiater in the back of the unit creates quite a bit of distortion. And this is at low to medium levels. Anything above that it just becomes unbearable and sounds truly bad. I'm slightly dissapointed with this and since I tested it using my iPad and Samsung Galaxy S4, I am hearing the same problems with the lower frequencies consistantly. I am not using it any longer, as the SQ is just not bearable with most of the music I listen to (electronic, pop, and jazz).

I got my speaker today. Love it! Sound quality is great for its size and the speakerphone is clear according to my friend. It also looks and FEELS great :)

      A few issues:

      - Like others said, the port covers are ehhh... but no biggie for me.

      - For Android, I'm using it on my Galaxy S3. The "double clicking" for voice commands work fine, but the problem is that I overrode mine using another app (home2 shortcut) so that double clicking on my phone will bring up Google Now instead. It'd be nice if you can change this behavior such that it'll use the default app rather than the native call of voice command.

      - I know you discussed this before, but man I really miss the previous track feature. Why the heck did you have to leave it out? This is the first player where I can't even go back a track... pretty messed up for a player =P.

Other than that, I'm pretty happy with the product. Thanks!

Ok after reading over this page again, I figured it out and I DO have the correct charger...Sorry, took me a bit to get it.. Thanks. My speaker works great and can't wait to take it on vacation in June!!!

I just opened my green REX. The charger that came with it won't work. It is the wrong size. Fortunately I have a different cord and am charging with it now. Hoping it works and will check it shortly. Anyone else get the wrong charger with theirs???

Wow, I left of few of those sentences hanging. Guess my multi-tasking isn't as up to par as I'd like to think. What I meant to say in that last sentence under "hopes" was "...while it seems I've listed more bad than good those are just numbers. For the most part the problems are tiny completely avoidable, I was just being as thorough as I could. The real takeaway is that, on the whole, this is an amazing little device. Is there room for improvement? Sure. But at the end of the day this is a solid speaker that packs a big sound into a small package."

    15. Missing_small

Creator Dan Wilday on May 30, 2013

Having had my REX for about 24 hours new here's my incomplete review:
      The GOOD:
Audio - For the size the audio is great! Does it give pitch perfect reproductions that will shame your vacuum tube amp and can system at home? Ha! No way in hell... if you have those sorts of expectations you can stop reading now. Does it kick out tunes that are fairly faithful and not pretty full and loud without the usually tinny audio you expect form a tiny form factor? Oh hell yes. I had a Jawbone Jambox for about a week last year and as much as people said it was loud... they were full of it. While the bass was more full and true on the Jambox in general it could not pump out the tunes to a level that one would want in speaker made to taken outside.

Little rubber port covers - while necessary get in the way and actually make it more difficult to use the USB plug than I'd expect. Grill Cover - this one is minor for me, but because I like trying out every feature I tried to remove the grill cover... completely in vain. That sucker seems attached at the bottom of the unit. Too small of a tolerance in manufacturing? Liberal use of glue? Who knows but that thing won't budge on mine.
Strange Behavior #1 - Ok here's the only real noteworth problem I've found. First, I tried using the REX's audio in jack and screwed up and plugged it into the out. For some reason I got a high pitched bit of feedback. That shouldn't happen to a port that shouldn't be taking in audio. Sounds like maybe an improper diode choice letting audio travel where it shouldn't?

Strange Behavior #2 - I tried using it's Audio Out jack hooked to my home theater setup and it worked well. I dropped the volume on the rex to just listen through my other speakers. Pretty rad. I then wanted to see how the two speaker systems sounded together and tried turning the rex up... bad idea. Both the REX and my stereo crackeled and dropped the sound. The audio finally fully returned when i unplugged the external audio cable.

MIC - I've yet to test the SIRI or Speakerphone capabilities. The former, meh, I rarely use that thing anyways... the latter, that could be great for the car... I'll keep you posted.
Water Resistance - Umm... I used it near my shower, but no I don't plan to test out just how much water it can take. I'm not made of money. :)

I'm hoping that the USB cable provided can and will be used for firmware upgrades. Some of these behaviors may have to do with the microprocessor just needing a fresh set of code... some may be manufacturing defects, and while it seems I've listed more bad than good.

I was also a Pebble backer and there's something super magical to changing the music track via watch that then sends the audio to a wireless speaker. Dear The Future... I AM IN YOU!

      @dan wilday
      @joe kromer

I actually tried it with the switch in both positions to be sure.
I also tried to pair it in both switch positions. When the switch is in the off position and its plugged, the light will show full green regardless of charge. When I turn it on the blue light flashes twice and my phone will read that there is an available "headset" but it will fail to pair.
I then tried to play audio in using the jack in both the on and off positions and it failed to work. It made me incredibly sad- especially hearing about all the good things about the speaker.
I already sent it in for repairs- with luck I'll get it back in two weeks :'(

Oh and for all asking about shipping. They've mentioned (maybe on Twitter?) that they aren't doing tracking. And it makes sense as it arrived USPS... and if any of you have tried using the tracking info given by usps you'd know it's a complete joke. I've had items marked in transit for hours after it arrived (and in-transit was about the only info I got... it never mentioned arriving in my city, etc). Anyhow I think they opted for speedy delivery and not having to pay someone to enter everyones tracking number into a computer. My guess is give it a few more days... a week tops.

    18. Missing_small

Creator Dan Wilday on May 29, 2013

Just received my REX today. It looks awesome! I haven't been able to give it a full test yet (I'm still at work) but the little bit of playing I did confirmed that this thing seems to be pretty damn loud. :)

Two issues so far (and one may be due to user error).
First (non-user error) the port covers are really annoying and the clip doesn't hold them in place as was recommended by boombotix in response to a video review.

Second: I've had some strange sounds come out of mine... once I accidentally plugged into the audio out port and started getting a high pitched squeal. I'd guess feedback except... well there was no input for it to feed back from. It was strange.

Oh and I'll add a third: Not sure I really dig the clip. It looks like I might be able to remove though I may want it at a later time. For future revisions and replaceable mount would be cool. Maybe something along the lines of what GoPro does with their swappable mounting system.

    19. Missing_small

Creator Dan Wilday on May 29, 2013

Have you turned it on? I know this sounds like a dumb question. I'm a programmer and I laugh at things like that, except... earlier today I was trying out the audio in and had it plugged in and charging (with the little light) and was confused why it wasn't playing. Well, it wasn't turned on. If that's not the case with you sounds like you got a bum unit (heh.. bum unit) get in touch with Boombotix I'm sure they'd exchange it for you.

A device only draws as many amps as it needs, so either will work. The voltage is what you have to worry about.

Received mine today...excellent sound and I know I will get many years of enjoyment with these only quibble is that I wish the rubber plugs which protect the ports opened outward instead of inward against the unit. There is not enough room to easily insert the aux jack and micro usb because the plug gets in the way. Had they opened outward, there would be more least that is how it is for me with these mitts I have as hands....
