About this project
Welcome and thank you for visiting our page! Booking Dance Festival Edinburgh 2012 is a five-star dance “festival within a festival” at The Edinburgh Fringe presented by Producer Jodi Kaplan. This year marks our fifth annual festival! We are so happy to be returning each year as a conduit for American dance companies to present their work overseas, where they gain credible, international exposure at our partnered, high-profile Venue150 @ EICC.
This year is extra special because Booking Dance Festival is proudly a part of the Cultural Olympiad - in conjunction with the London Olympics 2012!!
Our goal is to raise $5,000 for our fifth year! So give $12 (or more) for Booking Dance Festival 2012 to help make this happen!
Our total educational, intern, and production costs as well as artistic, marketing, and production expenses need to be offset. Every contribution, large or small, is tremendously helpful and greatly appreciated!
By supporting our campaign, you are making the following three programs possible!!
-Booking Dance Festival Educational Day!
Students from across Scotland are invited to come to our festival and learn from dance companies for the day! Free tickets, panel discussions, and Q&A with artists.
-Booking Dance Festival Intern Project!
Interns from several U.S. and Scottish Universities receive guided, hands-on experience in arts administration and production. This year we have interns from the University of Edinburgh Business School and Telford College in Edinburgh. Your support provides staffing, one-on-one counseling, and mentorships that would otherwise not be possible.
-Booking Dance Festival Performances!
We cover half of the production costs for each artist! Help support six amazing dance companies from across the USA! Our goal is to subsidize the production fees and provide each artist with support.
Additionally - we are looking towards implementing a new and upgraded website! Your support will also help us in attaining this goal.
ABOUT BOOKING DANCE FESTIVAL EDINBURGH 2012: The festival's goal is to position dance as a more prominent art form within The Edinburgh Fringe while introducing audiences to the best the USA has to offer dance-wise. Featuring a diverse range of the newest and most dynamic dance artists from across America, the “festival showcase” format is designed to entertain new dance audiences as well as provide a glimpse into the current American dance scene for the professional arts community. We offer a "bite-sizes" of dance with each company performing for 5-15 minutes - this is truly unique and keeps audiences on the edges of their seats as waves of dance move in front of them.
Booking Dance Festival also hopes to increase awareness and enthusiasm for dance throughout Scotland and have made extra efforts to reach out to the local constituency and youth. The six participating companies in 2012 each perform different styles that draw on the dynamic American tradition of dance including Dance Theater, Irish Step/Hip Hop, Multi-Media, Contemporary, and Classic Works.
In our partnerships with these amazing artists we work tirelessly to produce this festival, cover all of the involved expenses and over half of artists' production fees. Each of the artists, in turn, have undertaken the huge and heartfelt artistic and financial commitment it takes to travel across the Atlantic and perform with us for one week. Together, we work to make the festival and its programs soar, and with your help, we'll be able to make this year's festival an amazing success! Please note that participating companies will be performing SIX world premieres. I personally am a fan of the outstanding 2012 artists including New York City Dance companies: Rebecca Stenn Company, Claire Porter/PORTABLES, Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company, Kim Gibilisco Dances, and Hammerstep & Deoro, as well as our special guest Dallas Black Dance Theatre.
As a Thank You to our performers and a way of giving back to our community, each summer Booking Dance Festival hosts an annual free outdoor preview performance celebration at Bryant Park, in the heart of NYC! This year tens of thousands of New Yorkers and visitors got a glimpse of what makes us move!
We would like to thank you advance for your support, interest, and participation.
Make sure to contribute before 20-12 (August 20th at midnight)!
"Whether you're a contemporary dance fiend or one of the uninitiated wanting to take a chance, this production is perfect for the Edinburgh Fringe lover. Seven dance companies, comprising more than thirty dancers in total, each provide a snapshot of quality, quirky and downright über speciality dance. From every corner of America, Jodi Kaplan, dance producer extraordinaire, has gathered eclectic works...and woven them into a recipe of pure enjoyment. Professional American dance at the Fringe has been neglected of late but plans are afoot for this wonderful dance 'festival within a festival' to return next year, and I for one will be sitting in rapture in the aisles."
