20 years ago Mike Stragey and Chris Tremmel (me) began working on a game for the Sega Genesis at Interplay Productions. The only requirement was that the game needed to be both fun AND gross. The idea was to appeal to the "Garbage Pail Kids" generation. Several concepts were pitched to the bosses Brian Fargo and Alan Pavlish. Some were incredibly funny, some were incredibly offensive. From this primordial design ooze, Boogerman was born!
The game took roughly a year to develop and was released on the Sega Genesis in November, 1994. Initial reviews praised it as "a total gas!" and "An instant classic!"
For the last 20 years, Mike and myself have been busy programming and designing games for studios like Virgin Interactive, Crystal Dynamics, Electronic Arts, Activision, Insomniac Games, and Way Forward. Credited titles include Boogerman, The Lost Vikings, Robocop VS Terminator, Clay Fighter, Gex 2, Gex 3, Walt Disney World Racing, LotR The Two Towers, Return of the King, The Third Age, Kung Fu Panda, Fuse, Shantae, Contra 4, Shantae: Risky's Revenge and more!
We have talked about doing a new Boogerman for years and now thanks to Kickstarter, the timing feels perfect! Mike and I are now 100% dedicated to this project and with your help and support we will be able to "re-boot" the franchise and bring a brand new Boogerman to the latest and greatest gaming consoles for all to enjoy.
- You are Snotty Ragsdale (aka Boogerman), an eccentric millionaire posing as a mild mannered Janitor working for the globally renowned scientist, Professor Stinkbaum. A catastrophic event will send you into Dimension X-Crement where you will have to use your mega-powered bodily functions to takedown the dreaded Booger Meister and his army of Nose Goblins. You will pick, flick, run, jump, fly, gas, and swim your way through 6 unique worlds. Throughout the game, you will be aided by professor Stinkbaum with brand new gadgets such as the Snot Whip, and the Snot-so-Silent-Butt-Deadly Fart Copter!
- Boogerman 20th Anniversary is a brand new side-scrolling action platform game. The game will be based on the original in terms of setting, story, and characters. We will maintain the tone of the 16-bit classic while at the same time bringing a new game structure, new mechanics, new levels, and new gorgeous HD animation, art, and presentation to the modern day consoles.
- The game will feature an entirely new musical score created by composer Grant Kirkhope of Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Donkey Kong 64 fame.
- All development and asset creation is being overseen by Mike Stragey and Chris Tremmel. With over 40 years of combined experience they are veteran game developers with hands-on experience across a variety of genres and platforms. Along the way backers will have insight into the development process through video updates, blogs, concept art, and live webcasts. In addition, backers will have the opportunity to help shape the game by voting on certain design aspects via our forums.
- Boogerman 20th Anniversary is being developed using Unity for the PC, Mac OS, Linux, PS4, PS Vita, XBOX-ONE, and Wii U. The version of the game you end up choosing is up to you! Our current release date is set for November 2014.
It’s a dark and stormy night at Professor Stinkbaum’s lab where a machine has been built to save the world by trans-existing all pollution to a far-away location in time and space dubbed Dimension X-Crement.
Eccentric millionaire Snotty Ragsdale has taken a job at the lab to investigate its safety and to find out exactly where the pollution is going. He has a bad feeling about Professor Stinkbaum’s latest contraption.
This night his suspicions will come true...
Join Boogerman on his journey to uncover the mysteries and evil that lurk within Dimension X-Crement!
Playing as Boogerman, it's up to you and your bodily functions to explore Dimension X-Crement, take on Booger Meister, his evil Henchmen (and woman), and his army of hideous creatures, including the Nose Goblins.
The game is broken up into 6 different worlds:
- The Flatulent Swamps - Watch your step in this gassy bog. Word is, Hickboy does not take well to trespassin'. The signs read "Dayngur!" for a reason.
- Boogerville - Voted Dimension X-Crement's number one place to live... If you're a Nose Goblin that is.
- The Pits - I swear this place looks like the insides of some massive, disgusting creature.
- Mucous Mountains - Look out for Butt-heads. The hills are alive, but snot with the sound of music.
- The Nasal Caverns - Beware of post nasal drip. What exactly ARE they mining down there?
- Pus Palace - The home of Booger Meister, Pus Palace is... well, Pus Palace is friggin' gross. Think about it.
Each world consists of 3 levels, plus 2 sewer "bonus" areas. In addition, each world contains it's own boss level, for a total of 18 full levels, 36 bonus areas, and 6 bosses.
Boogerman 20th Anniversary will feature the core mechanics from the original game, including:
- Platforming - Sprint, Run, Jump, Slide, and Glide your way across the disgusting landscapes.
- Gas Powered Attacks - It wouldn't be a Boogerman game without Burping and Farting!
- Mucous Powered Attacks - Snot and Mucous make a triumphant return to Boogerman 20th Anniversary!
- Power Ups - Milk Bottles and Chili Peppers are back to enhance your abilities!
The game will also include entirely new game mechanics and gadgets such as:
- The Snot Whip
- S.s.S.B.D Fart-copter
- Wall Jumping
- Mine-carting and more!
Other new elements include:
- An Overhead Map - Get the lay of the land from the expansive overhead map. Linear world progression is a thing of the past in Boogerman 20th Anniversary.
- New Collectable System - Multiple collectable types will now play a big part in how you unlock the levels and re-playability.
- Dramatic Snotimal Rescue - Save the Snotimals, save the world.
- An Expanded Story - Who IS Booger Meister and why is he so bent on taking over OUR world? Dive deeper into X-Crement than ever before!
Boogerman 20th Anniversary will be packed full of non-stop side-scrolling fun with brand new disgusting characters to meet and defeat!
In addition to the core team, Mike and Chris are working with a number of incredibly talented artists and animators from around the industry. These folks will be revealed as the campaign goes on.

In the years following the original Boogerman, the paper animation was presumed "lost". Through the magic of the internet we were able to re-acquire a very limited number of the original frames from a collector. This is the first and probably only time these will be available.

If we hit our initial Kickstarter funding goal, we can promise you a quality, fun, worthy Boogerman reboot. That being said, we have some incredibly cool game enhancements and special content that we would love to see included in the game if we hit the stretch goals. FULL VOICE OVER
The very first stretch goal will allow us to bring in professional voice actors and record full V.O. for all story moments within the game. We are pretty excited about this one as the original game had nothing of the sort. We have some ideas on who might play these roles and will reveal more when the time comes!
Reaching this goal will allow composer Grant Kirkhope to create even more music for Boogerman 20th Anniversary. Not only will this allow us more individual pieces, but this will also allow us to extend the pieces that are currently planned. We are also considering other ideas here like possibly including retro versions of the new music! The best part of all is that all of this will be included in both the digital download soundtrack and the physical CD copy of the soundtrack.
Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure is a 2D platform video game created by Interplay Entertainment and released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1994 and later on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995. The Genesis version was also released on the Wii Virtual Console in North America on November 24, 2008 and in Europe on December 12, 2008. Boogerman also made a cameo appearance as a playable character as the rival of Earthworm Jim in Interplay's ClayFighter 63⅓.
The original game animation consisted of over 2000 hand drawn frames. Each frame of animation was drawn on animation paper, cleaned up, inked, scanned in, shrunk down, and colored before it went into the game.
The original Boogerman commercial aired in 1994, usually on MTV during episodes of Beavis and Butthead.
Toy Ghost LLC was founded in September of 2013 by Mike Stragey and Chris Tremmel in Valley Glen, CA. Mike and Chris have been friends for over 20 years and have shipped 40+ games on platforms ranging from the original Game Boy all the way to the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Mike and Chris share a love for fun, entertaining games that focus on gameplay, both growing up with brands like Atari, Commodore, Sega, and Nintendo. Boogerman 20th Anniversary is the first in hopefully many great games to come from Toy Ghost.

Risks and challenges
Never once has a game that we have worked on been considered "easy" to develop. The truth is, making games is hard. Mike and I will be relying on our experience from the last 20+ years to make this game happen. We have worked on and shipped games on numerous consoles including launch titles. We have worked at both large corporations and independent studios. We understand the process and the pressures that come along with tight deadlines and delivering quality games, and we welcome the new challenges of platforms like the PS4, PS Vita, and Wii U.
Another one of the biggest challenges in any game is creating quality assets and content on time. Over the years we have developed relationships with numerous talented developers. We are working with a number of incredibly talented artists and animators to ensure that we deliver the highest quality end product possible.
Taking feedback from the community is definitely not a new concept to us. However, involving the community in the design and development process is. We love the idea of pulling back the curtain and inviting you to come along on this exciting journey. While we are not 100% sure of exactly how all of this will work, we are approaching this with an incredibly open mindset. We are very open to trying different things and figuring out what works best for both parties. Xbox One is now supported!
Unfortunately we will not be supporting the 3DS as part of the campaign. The amount of changes that would have to be done to the assets, and work on the engine side of things just is not feasible for us financially. That being said, we love the 3DS and will consider a 3DS version if this game gets funded, once we reach the end of development.
We are working on this right now and will have an answer soon.
While 375k IS a lot of money, it's actually a reasonable amount when it comes to making a game like this on five different platforms. There are a lot of things that have to be taken into account like paying the Kickstarter fees, taxes, physical goods, shipping, Unity licensing fees for each platform, development kits, and that is BEFORE starting production. Mike and I have made games with budgets ranging from a couple hundred thousand to over 20 million and we have a realistic understanding of what it takes to deliver the quality we are after. The last thing we want to do is take your money and not be able to deliver what we have promised.
