“I woke up here, and whatever memories I had no longer mattered. All that mattered was this...place.”
Someone wakes up on a beach, memory of their past life intact but unimportant. All that matters now is this place. They wander a decaying beach piled with giant bones, a bleak place where lighting strikes and dark hermits warn of painful transformations to come.
The Bones of This Place is a 48 page, 9x6, hardcover graphic homage to loneliness and unwanted transformation. Originally created as an INKTOBER project for 2018, with your help it can become so, so much more.
In 2018 something happened and my body started becoming something new. It did this without my permission, without caring what I needed or who I believed myself to be.
You’re trapped in your skin - even if you don’t want to be. There are things you can do to change yourself, but there are parts of you, deep down in the dark, that shift without your control. You’re bound to these dark places, unable to escape. I became acutely aware, and troubled by this knowledge as my skin and bones started to twist into something I didn’t set out to be. It consumed, consumes, me still.
In 2018 I went to my partner’s childhood home in Seaside, Oregon.
He had grown up as an army brat, moving from place to place, but he always talked fondly about the wreckage of the Peter Iredale, the skeletal remains of a ship that went aground in 1906. The beach surrounding the bones of the ship was littered with large pieces of driftwood, whole trees practically, that had washed up on this stretch of lonely shore. The starkness of the water, the dull sand, the pieces of wood that breached the sand like broken vertebrates, it all pulled at me. It almost felt like an ache in my spine. It was beautiful and frightening.
This combination of the beautiful loneliness and unknown pull of the wreckage and beach twisted around the unwanted transformation I was undergoing and ARE, the hooded figure who wanders the stagnant beach, was created.
This is a different path than other Kickstarters I’ve done. NOSFERATU! was irreverent but kind hearted, Casket Land was a game that brought people together. THE BONES OF THIS PLACE is a move to atmospheric eldritch fiction. I want it to be a beautiful artifact that draws you in and leaves you beautifully empty.
With your help, I’m hoping to bring you a 9x6 48 page hardcover piece - the main story, as well as concept art and explanations of what exactly, ARE and WAS are.
"This isn't something you can escape from. You can run and run, but your body will continue to betray you. Why fight? Why not just let the changes come peacefully?”
The setting of THE BONES OF THIS PLACE is stark and simple - and so are the base rewards for this project. Depending on what level you choose to support at - you can get:
- A digital edition of the book.
- A hardcover copy kickstarter edition
- Original art from the book
- A sticker of ARE and WAS
- An embroidered patch of ARE
- The original pages from the book (black and white ink and halftone)
- A hand knitted wool (by Marie) hood based on the hoods worn by ARE and WAS
Our STRETCH GOALS are officially here, priced, and ready to be met. By backing and sharing, you bring this labor of love closer to the vision I've always had - a beautiful, spot gloss, foil stamped, and...well...you'll see.
SHIPPING WILL BE CHARGED AFTER THE CAMPAIGN ENDS.
All shipping fees will be charged AFTER the campaign ends, just before we ship the books. By doing it this way we can ensure you are paying the lowest possible cost for shipping.
We will ship the books in bulk to a series of warehouses around the globe. Final surveys will then be sent to each Backer requesting their address and calculating an accurate shipping charge. We're going to do everything we can to keep these rates as low as possible.
Risks and challenges
As with all Kickstarters - there is risk. I have run two successful Kickstarters in the past, and I don't anticipate this one going haywire. However, there are always slow downs when you deal with printers and manufacturers. My schedule is busy with cons and other work but, because this project has been done for almost a year and is already formatted, the only thing we need to wait on before sending it to print is for the funding to clear.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
