Bones is a hilarious early reader that helps little ones fall in love with reading. With simple language, repetition, and colorful illustrations, Bones will keep beginning readers wanting to read more. We know that you want your child to grow up with strong character and the grit to succeed. At the core of this book is the important message of perseverance. Bones reminds kids that they will succeed if they won’t give up.
True Early Reader
Finding a book that has grace for beginner readers can be tough. We have spoken with many librarians who have shared their frustration with finding “true” early readers. True early readers have a simplicity of language, only a few words per page, and the reward of a fun illustration at the end of a good effort. These kinds of books empower little ones to fall in love with reading. Bones is the kind of book little ones need when learning to read.
Using humor and heart, Bones introduces you to Buddy, a lovable dog with a key to a treasure box. Then the inevitable strikes- he loses his key. Determined, Buddy will look for his key until he finds it. He digs and finds… a bone. He continues on, digging, swimming, sailing a ship, climbing every mountain, and searching the farthest reaches of the earth, finding many more bones. Never giving up, Buddy finally finds his key. Buddy opens his treasure box to reveal a fun surprise ending. Bones brings the giggles and keeps the pages turning.
Buddy the Puppet
Bones will make your child fall in love with Buddy, so we have created companion puppet to boost story time fun. With your helping hand, Buddy Bones can tell his own stories, talk about tough subjects, and make jokes that will keep the love and learning going!
We believe learning happens best when it is filled with love. Our stories seek to create opportunities for a relationship to grow. Bones contains conversation starters in the back of the book, encouraging caregivers to go beyond the story into practical life applications, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. Bones conversation starters discuss the virtue of hard work, understanding personal value, managing loss, and even include prompts for sharing your own stories with one another.
Kids Toss Bones Some Reviews!
We've had an overwhelmingly positive response so far from young readers! It's a great book for kindergarteners and 1st graders to learn to read with, but with the humor, plot twists, and colorful illustrations, it is enjoyed by any age. Don't just take our word for it...
Funding for Bones has already begun, with $5,000 reached through generous donors. With another $5,000 our project will be fully funded.
We have two more early readers that we cannot wait to bring to the world! With enough funding, we will be able to print new, funny, character education books.
But Mom Said No! Given the chance, we will make our second title accessible to backers. But Mom Said No! is our next hilarious early reader with an important message. Readers will come to realize in ridiculous and surprising ways that when Mom says no, it is motivated by love. Our conversations starters empower readers to say “no” with grace and conviction.
¡Huesos! We would love to offer Bones in Spanish (Huesos), meeting the desires of our Spanish-speaking friends and those studying Spanish as a second language. Early readers are fantastic tools for learning a second language. Your support will bring Huesos to print.
Meet the Creators
We are skilled artists and storytellers committed to igniting the passion and creativity of your little ones – knowing one day they’ll use these gifts to inspire their future and a better world for all.
Jolie Canoli (Dr. Jolie Williams) writes children’s stories that knit humor and heart into learning. She first began writing stories for the stage. Her experience as an international performing artist and teacher has given her insight into visual storytelling. As ordained ministers, Jolie and her husband have seen the power of stories in sharing truth with love. She also composes music, illustrates, and is the proud mother of four adventurous kids.
Jessica Ostrander creates oodles of doodles, bringing stories to life with vibrant creativity. She is a visual and performing artist, and an art and theater educator. Her living persona of silliness brings joy on stage and off, entertaining kids of all ages. She believes stories are the key to making the world a better place because they help each of us discover a piece of ourselves, and find where we belong.
With your continued support, we can afford to bring early readers to print. We are so excited to equip kids with valuable life lessons through colorful storybooks that pack a lot of humor and heart into the pages. Thanks in advance for becoming a friend of Jolie Canoli, and for helping your little ones think bigger, love better, and fall in love with reading.
