Air Sex: Making Love Out of Nothing At All is a documentary about one of the weirdest live touring shows that's ever existed - the Air Sex World Championships. The film will be shot on the road, as the 2013 tour snakes its way across America – from Miami to LA, and culminating in the 2013 Finals in New Orleans (the first time the finals have been held outside of Austin, TX!).
But what the heck is Air Sex?
The Air Sex World Championships were launched in 2008 at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX. The show was initially produced as a one-off show in Japan and was inspired by Air Guitar competitions, which have spread across the world in dozens of major cities and a World Finals event in Finland. A documentary named ‘Air Guitar Nation’ was released in 2009, chronicling a year of competitors pretending to play imaginary musical instruments during popular songs.
Air Sex is similar to Air Guitar, except competitors pretend to make love onstage with a partner who isn’t there. Also, Air Sex isn’t boring and you’ll never see the same show twice, unlike Air Guitar (Air Guitar totally sucks).
The show itself is simple - roughly a dozen people compete in each city while a trio of comedians/sex experts/celebrities judge their performances. The judges choose three (sometimes four in the case of a tie fuck-off) people to move on to the final round. Then all three must perform to mystery songs and a winner is chosen by the audience’s cheers. No nudity, no physical contact with another person onstage.

Once comedian Chris Trew (Comedy Central, America’s Got Talent) discovered Air Sex, he immediately transformed from a casual competitor to the show’s host/producer, giving the show a unique format, flavor, and creating a cheap, spectacular touring show.
People of all ages (over 18 of course), genders, nationalities, religions, and sexual orientations signed up, cobbled together embarrassing or hilarious routines, and people’s minds were blown.
Since then, Air Sex has received tremendous word of mouth and press coverage from IFC, VH1’s Best Week Ever, Oxygen’s Bad Girls Club, America’s Got Talent, HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, along with hundreds of thousands of YouTube views.
As the brand built and spread, more and more fans started taking the competition seriously, crafting elaborate costumes and choreographed routines – some are silly and bizarre and others feel like you’re watching an extremely intimate, private moment that you shouldn’t be seeing. Yet, because anyone can compete (karaoke-style), sometimes a drunk, rowdy onlooker hops up onstage and blows all of the well-practiced competition out of the water. And that’s what makes Air Sex so fun, enigmatic, and unpredictable.

About the Production
Using a skeleton crew of hard-working filmmakers who have been producing projects together for over 10 years, this documentary hopes to capture all of the many things that can go wrong before, during, and after an Air Sex show. Sometimes the venue is crummy, or no promotions happened and only ten people show up. Other times, a competitor’s 3-foot dildo goes missing, or it won’t shoot yogurt out like it’s supposed to. Sometimes the police show up to shut down what they think is an illegal live erotic sex show.
We’ll shoot in 2 phases - the 3-week-long Air Sex East Coast Tour in June 2013 and the 2-week-long Air Sex West Coast Tour in August 2013. Our plan is to premiere the finished film in early 2014.
The production company behind this is Studio 8, a collective of artists and filmmakers in LA, Austin, and New Orleans. Their most well-known recent projects were the web series The Tommy Wi-Show (Machinima) and the TV pilot The House That Drips Blood on Alex (Comedy Central), both of which happened to star cult film icon Tommy Wiseau.
We've managed to fund most of the shooting costs ourselves, but the money raised from this Kickstarter will help cover the costs of actually finishing the movie. This includes editing, color correction, DVD production, legal fees, licensing, music, sound mixing, festival entry fees, etc. We also intend to create a fully original soundtrack, featuring songs created specifically for the wonderful Air Sex routines in the film.
Essentially, the more we can raise here, the better and faster we can finish the film.
If we make our goal...
If we far exceed our goal, we’ll be able to take the film even further, to audiences around America, the world, film festivals, or maybe even your home town. As this Kickstarter campaign continues, we will be adding more rewards, so check back often. If we blow past our goal, we'll have lots more goodies to rain upon our backers, too!
Risks and challenges
There's always a risk that unforeseen production delays could occur. Keep in mind that this is a full-length film being produced by just a few hard-working people, not a big, fancy studio. But that just means that our film could be a helluva lot cooler than other over-produced films.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
