A Swiss watch for new times. Archetypical design without frills. As confident as its owner.
We call it «Bólido», Spanish for meteor. A luminary that crosses between the somewhat immovable fixed stars of established brands on the watch firmament. A timepiece with surprising qualities at a completely un-Swiss price.
Bólido is 100% Swiss made
The new Federal Ordinance, in force since 1 Jan 2017 makes it difficult to launch a reasonably priced ‘Swiss Made’ mechanical watch. While movement and assembly always had to be Swiss, parts such as the watch cases that require expensive forging tooling and multiple labour-intensive operations must now have at least 60% Swiss content. The capacities of suppliers that use the usual production methods are absorbed by the big luxury brands which are able to afford their high costs.
The Bólido Concept
We therefore chose to manufacture the Bólido case employing automatic lathing machines; in contrast to traditional case production, this so-called ‘décolletage’ is highly competitive and there is ample capacity for it in Switzerland. Sophisticated lathing machines are even able to do the finishing and polishing simultaneously.
It did not bother us that this method leaves very little room for fancy design, however! On the contrary, Bólido was intended to be bold and out of step. Adding a second rotative axis not only tilts the face of the watch to facilitate time-reading in situations like car-driving, etc.; it also increases the case height at the top of the dial to allow the integration of a large winding crown in an unusual but well protected position.
Lathing also facilitates the implementation of yet another feature of the Bólido design:
The Bólido monocoque case construction
With it, the movement with its dial and hands is inserted into the case from the top. This unusual construction eliminates a third of the parts, including the case back and gasket – what is not there cannot leak and costs nothing! This kind of systematic exploration of production-specific properties has allowed us to build the Bólido entirely in Switzerland economically and with the same high quality that applies to famous luxury brands.
The heart of the Bólido: the self-winding mechanical movement
The movement is supplied to us by a leading manufacturer and is hand-assembled by highly skilled craftsmen and women. The cost of such a movement relates to two main factors:
- Accuracy of adjustment in several position-angles
- The finishing of the parts: enhancing the precision by reducing tolerances to broaden the range of adjustability; the beauty of such finishing is a welcome side effect.
We do not cut corners in either of these two areas. On the contrary: the Bólido movements are built to our exacting specifications of regulation in 5 positions (instead of the usual 3), and the meticulous finishing is underscored by Geneva stripes and engine-turned decoration.
The dial face
The dial and hands match Bólido’s functionality; we spent a significant amount of time searching for the best readability from different angles, distances and in varying light conditions. We finally chose the simplicity of a generic instrument scale, because reinventing the wheel will not make it better; SuperLuminova plots on the dial and hands enable excellent reading in darkness.
Band and folding buckle
The band is hand cast in natural latex-based rubber; it is highly resistant to saltwater, hence its popularity amongst professional divers. It only requires a rinse with soap once in a while to keep it looking like new, even after many years. A quality watch is recognisable by its buckle, but even luxury brands often charge extra for an elaborate folding buckle with a safety clasp as is used for Bólido.
- Surgical grade stainless steel case
- Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
- Water resistant to 100m / 330ft, every watch tested prior to shipment
- Exclusive natural rubber strap
- Adjustable stainless steel folding buckle
- Swiss Mechanical Automatic Movement regulated in 5 positions
- 44 hours power reserve
In spite of its fashionable size, Bólido watches fit to almost every wrist-size, even very small ones. This is because the distance between the axes of the two springbars holding the band-ends underneath the case is only 32 mm. Regular gents watches of comparable size have a typical axis-distance of 42 mm or more.

Our combined experience enables us to communicate what we actually want to our suppliers and how it has to be done, rather than just buying what is offered; in fact, every single part of the Bólido timepiece is custom-made to match our exigence for quality and design.
Work in progress
What watch start-ups and watch buyers often forget is that a mechanical timepiece is as good as its after-sale care; any elaborate warranty is worthless if it is not backed by solid, bricks and mortar service facilities that stock all the necessary parts. Our business plan includes sufficient spare parts to last at least 10 years right from the start of production. A two year warranty covers all manufacturing faults and material defects. And you'll find Bólido Service Centres with highly skilled watch makers to provide maintenance and repairs in:
- Switzerland: Bólido Uhrenservice, Glarnerstr. 25, 8854 Siebnen
- Germany (for the EU): Ventura Watches, Gattingerstr. 11, 97076 Wuerzburg
- USA: Swisservice Inc., 1774 East Herbert Avenue, Salt Lake City, UT 84108
- Japan: Preciluxe Co. Ltd., 〒227-0067 神奈川県横浜市青葉区松風台14-41
And one more thing: when our regular e-shop opens after this campaign it will efficiently facilitate and transact all your servicing needs online.
Standard retail prices
After the Kickstarter campaign the watches will be offered at standard retail prices:
- BÓLIDO WHITE | BÓLIDO BLACK: € | CHF | US$ 650.-
- BÓLIDO YELLOW | BÓLIDO RED | BÓLIDO PEBBLE: € | CHF | US$ 690.-
Transparent cost information
You certainly won't get this from any established brand, but as a backer of our project you have a right to know. Knowledge helps you to be a wise consumer: don't rely on fancy, photoshopped images! Descriptions like ‘Swiss movement’ or ‘Swiss design’ try to disguise the fact that such a watch is in fact NOT Swiss made! A quality product has its price. The Bólido bill of materials and assembly costs amount to CHF 242, which is made up as follows:
Now lets see how this works out in the final price calculation:
As you can see, we have worked this out very carefully; we are no gamblers. Our delivery schedule is realistic, but we will keep you continuously informed of what is happening, positive or negative, honestly and on time. We want Bólido to be a long-term venture and we have bigger plans. Which is why our project is conservatively planned, our start-up goals are tough and only one third of financing depends on Kickstarter pledges – the other two thirds are coming from our own pockets.

Risiken und Herausforderungen
The senior members of the Bólido Team are experienced professionals, familiar with the nuts and bolts of watch development, production, quality control and logistics. All our sources and suppliers are reputable, tried and tested businesses. But we are well aware that every project, no matter how well conceived, has its own risks and challenges. Snags are bound to occur in the process; when they happen, we know how to deal with them. Moreover, we believe in honest communication. Should we encounter any significant problem likely to affect our performance, we promise to inform you in a timely fashion.
Obviously, the biggest risk (for us) is not getting this Kickstarter project funded; if that is the case, you will incur no cost and your card will not be charged. As soon as we meet our Kickstarter funding goal, however, we and our suppliers are poised to activate production.
