Welcome to Bold Miniatures' first Kickstarter, we're unveiling our first miniature ever: Joshua; a cold blooded hitman jam packed with awesome detail.
Joshua is an exclusive 300 copy limited and numbered edition miniature in 75mm scale, casted in high quality resin. He is based on a great concept called "The Mercenary" by the extremely talented Elisa Day a.k.a. Katherine Zhuk.
James W. Cain is the master sculptor behind the great interpretation of the concept. His work retains all the toughness of the original, while also adding an insane amount of details that makes this miniature both good looking and fun to paint.
The master has been printed on the best printer available in the market and will be produced by CMA Creative Solutions, which is a very well established company in the business, with more than 30 years of experience making miniatures. Here are some pictures of a few casts done before the campaign to check mould and production quality. This is the final sculpt in high quality resin, put together without any gap filling. The pieces fit really well.
While being sculpted in 75mm scale, he is actually 90mm, 95mm including the base (or 7 Oreo tall, depending on how you like measuring things), making him 2.1m tall in real life scale. Joshua comes unassembled, unpainted and divided in 8 pieces. The resin used for its production is a bit flexible to make sure that pieces don't snap during shipping. We worked very hard to maintain the number of pieces as low as possible while making the main piece as big as possible.
Bold Miniatures is a lot more more than just a bunch of resin pieces. Beautiful models that have been made with care and love shouldn't simply be tossed into cardboard boxes and call it a day. That's why Joshua comes in a luxury black box with Bold Miniatures' logo heat-stamped in gloss silver foil.
The box includes an authentication card depicting the original concept on one side, signed by Elisa Day exclusively for our backers and a short story with your copy number on the other side. The card is printed in Mohawk superfine 600g paper with a black core and is carefully presented to you when the lid is removed.
Finally, the reward. Joshua sits on a bed of black silk paper with his remaining pieces safe and sound in a black cotton bag (no plastic zip bags here).
As you can see, a lot of effort has been put into making the unboxing experience something memorable. And I really hope you enjoy it when you receive yours.
As stated before this miniature is a limited, numbered edition of 300 copies. Eight of them have been reserved for box art and promotion purposes and the rest can be acquired through this campaign at a reduced rate. There are three pledge levels (550 SEK Early Bird / 600 SEK 1x Joshua / 1100 SEK 2x Joshua) as shown below with the estimated cost in € , the exact exchange rate is the one on the day the Campaign closes. The future retail price will be 650 SEK (roughly 63€) unless all copies are sold already.
Creating a miniature of this quality is not cheap. It's been a long way of prototyping and testing to make sure everything is perfect. Some of the costs include concept art licenses, 3D modelling, 3D printing, mould making and box art among others. A batch of 100 boxes and 100 authenticity cards have already been produced and Joshua has been casted 5 times. The first moulds are waiting for production.
Producing moulds and boxes so early on is a risk if the project doesn't launch, but it was a commitment I was willing to make in order to show a finished product by the start of this campaign. Now I need your help raising funds to make this project possible. The money will go first and foremost to fulfil all pledges, then, the rest of the funds will be completely reinvested into creating more Bold Miniatures.
As for timeline, production will start as soon as the campaign reaches 125% of the goal. This will allow to shorten production times. The plan is to have all pledges sent latest on March 2019. It might sound like a long wait, but this timeline gives some room for handling everything correctly.
The shipping price is 110 SEK (roughly 10.5€) for everyone and it will be charged automatically by Kickstarter when the campaign is over. The copies will be sent through GamesQuest, a company well versed in fulfilling board game kickstarters, this allows to keep shipping prices low, while making the whole process a bit simpler than sending each copy manually. The estimation is to have all rewards sent latest on March 2019.
Shipments are US, AU and EU friendly. Meaning you won't have to worry about any extra charges if you live in any of those areas. For other areas it really depends on your country's import policies. Packages will be traceable within Europe.
IMPORTANT: do not add shipping price to your pledge, it will be managed by Kickstarter.
- Backer discount: all copies in this campaign are either 10€ or 5€ cheaper than the retail price, in appreciation for your support.
- Signed card: only through Kickstarter you will be able to get the card signed by Katherine Zhuk.
- No Stretch Goals: every effort has been put into the development of Joshua to reach the best quality for this product, instead of giving you some posters, unwanted miniatures or other useless stuff for "free".
- Limited availability: you might not be able to buy it later if all copies are sold here.
- The first of many: to call 1 of 300 Joshuas your very own. Every Collector knows that feeling to own a #1.
- I need you: support the development of this and further unique miniatures that don't make compromises regarding quality.
- He looks badass, he really does.
Finally would like to introduce myself. My name is Mario Ferreira, I'm the founder and man behind the brand you see here today. I'm a 32 years old Software Engineer, proud daddy and hobby painter based in Karlstad, Sweden.
With this campaign I want to present the company I've been brewing for almost a year now: Bold Miniatures. With Bold Miniatures I want to set a new standard in how collection models should be envisioned and presented. Focusing a lot in character design and pushing the limits of sculpting detail.
Quality is a core concept for Bold Miniatures. There is absolutely no compromise in the production process. Working only with the best sculptors for the models, the best available services for 3D printing the prototypes and only companies with a proven record of quality and reliability for the casts. For box arts Bold Miniatures will always feature the most talented painters in the current miniature scene, like Sergio Calvo Rubio in the case of Joshua. Finally, I want to emphasise the attention to detail that is placed on everything surrounding the miniature, which includes authenticity cards printed in luxury paper and beautiful custom packaging. When you receive and unpack your mini, you can be sure you've just got something really special.
There has been a lot of people involved in making this campaign a reality and I would like to thank them:
- My girlfriend, for having all the patience in the world, helping me with design choices, business decisions and most importantly, supporting my dreams.
- My sister, for helping me with design choices and reviewing all products.
- Andreas Andersson, since our talks have been my inspiration to start this adventure.
- Daniel Lunau and François Vaux, for giving advice, reviewing concepts, supporting and helping in everything they've been able to.
- Tim Daniel Jonker (Ouroboros Miniatures), for being the first professional in the industry of giving me advice and guidance.
- Scott James Walter (Miniac) and his fantastic Discord community, for being a great source of inspiration and advice.
- The Figure Painter Magazine for helping me get the word out there.
- And of course to Katherine Zhuk, James W. Cain, Louis Downs, Alan Crookes and Sergio Calvo Rubio for their professionality, making it possible to produce a miniature of dreams.
Risks and challenges
The campaign consist in a single miniature, with its production limited to 295 copies. This has been done this way in part to be sure that I can handle all pledges properly, even if the campaign goes viral. A batch of 100 authenticity cards and 100 boxes are already produced by the time of starting the campaign, meaning that the first 100 pledges just need the miniature to be shipped. CMA is also ready to start production. The biggest risk here is shipping properly, which is why I'm relying in GamesQuest for that, a company that is experienced and used to handle Kickstarter fulfillments.
If everything is to fail (production, shipment). I am fully committed to this project and will do everything in my power to send you your miniature. I will work my ass off to do that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
