Bok Academy Middle Schools Flying Knights students are planning to launch a high altitude weather balloon from the shores of Crooked Lake. We are already engaged in exciting research and have begun creating preliminary designs. The goal of the project is to test and analyze real life conditions, such as, wind, pressure, and temperature in a "near-space" environment. An added bonus is the amazing photographs that will be captured throughout the entire flight.

The entire payload is being designed from scratch; this means we have to understand the capabilities and limitations of each material and device. We have to learn how to read latitude and longitude coordinates for the recovery, distinguish what materials can withstand frigid temperatures and decreased pressure, and determine how changes in atmospheric layers can alter the projected route. In addition, computations are required to determine the volume of helium needed to reach our desired altitude of 100,000 ft. Upon recovery of the payload, we will be able to download the recorded altitude, temperature, and pressure and determine how each of these variables affect one another.

As we finalize our design, we have deemed the following materials necessary.

Materials Required:

  • High Altitude Weather Balloon
  • Parachute and lines
  • Spot Gen3 GPS Tracker
  • GoPro Hero3 Waterproof Camera
  • Flight Computer
  • Microbeacon
  • Radar Reflector
  • Helium
  • Payload Materials (styrofoam cooler, tape/adhesive, etc.)
  • Rewards Supplies (stamps, DVD's, etc.)
  • Miscellaneous (batteries, gloves, etc.)

We are confident that we will acquire the proper knowledge and guidance to make this project a success. We hope you trust our dedication and efforts and help us get this project "off the ground." We are excited to share our photographs, videos, and findings. We are the future of STEM!

Risks and challenges

The launch date has been tentatively set for Friday May 30th, 2014. However, if you are familiar with Florida weather, you may know that could be an obstacle. Rain, fog, or clouds shall not deter us but it could cause the launch date to be rescheduled.
