Body Beautiful Project
1 Goal. 1 Community. 6 Months. No Fear.
At some point we are all guilty of comparing ourselves to others, feeling like we're not good enough and letting fear control what we do. In a body-driven gay community we all feel the pressure. As we celebrate wins in marriage equality it may be time to start asking if we don't see ourselves as equal or deserving of love then what are we fighting for?
STEP 1. ADMITTING
I am going to be completely honest and vulnerable in an attempt to create a conversation within the gay community. I am the first to admit I am the biggest defeatist--ever. I have struggled with body image issues, self esteem and my own self worth. That's not easy to admit--but that, my friend, is the first step. I want to change the way I see the world, the way I feel about myself and am committed to building a strong body, mind and soul. I am tired of watching endless YouTube videos, obsessing over the right protein shake and thinking I can't have what others have. I can't be alone in these same struggles, right?
NO ONE SAID IT WOULD BE EASY
The Body Beautiful Project is bringing the gay community together. The web series will challenge myself and the community to address our insecurities and conquer our fears. I am going to have a real and relevant conversation with myself and others on our journey. The web series will document changing our body by learning tricks and tips in the kitchen and changing the way we eat, building routines and schedules, adding supplements and I'll be trying the latest and craziest beauty trends, many of which will be suggested by the Body Beautiful Project community, and often experts in the field will join the conversation. The web series documents the good, bad and ugly days and will be an opportunity for the community to share their own experience as they define and start on their own body beautiful journey.
YOU BETTER WORK
The Body Beautiful Project will be completely honest and interactive. The web series will ask for viewers and often experts in the field to share their own tricks and tips in the gym and struggles and successes when reaching their own goals of becoming body beautiful. As part of the web series I will push myself and ask the community to do the same when choosing physical challenges. This could include things like rock climbing, running a marathon, kick boxing and participating in a Tough Mudder. Many of the physical challenges will be submitted by the Body Beautiful Project community. As I commit myself to reaching my physical goals and becoming an athlete I hope others will do the same. The project will show that together it's possible to live a strong and confident life and that it's okay to fall as long as we get back up. Can I get an amen?
Becoming body beautiful isn't just having the body you want but conquering your fears and living an authentic life. As part of the web series I am addressing and talking openly about the fears in my life and asking others to do the same. I'll go through and document fear challenges many of which will be decided by the Body Beautiful Project community. I will challenge the community to create their own list of fears and then share their experience of overcoming them. The fear challenges could include doing karaoke, asking for a phone number at a bar, practicing with a local softball team, paragliding, swim suit shopping or getting a tattoo--just to name a few. Remember that fear doesn't just mean spiders, snakes and heights.
THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE
I often go out for a much needed night of dancing and instead of focusing on having a good time I compare myself with the dancers who, to me, seem to have the perfect body and all the confidence in the world. Sound familiar? I quietly think .. I could never do that, or be that. As part of the Body Beautiful Project I am accepting the challenge of one of my biggest fears--to be a dancer at New York City Gay Pride's Dance on the Pier and as part of the web series will document every moment of the experience including a rare behind the scenes look at one of the largest LGBT events in the country. I want others to know that you can accomplish having the body and confidence you want--you just have to work for it. Think of this as the ultimate "Made" without a paycheck from MTV.
