At the get go I know how to do this having published a book before using a slightly different print source but the same professional book designer, Susan Bard, and professional publishing guide; Charlie Clark. The book is already written, the copy is edited and ready to be submitted to the printer. And as my video tells you I do know almost to the cent how much the exercise will cost.
Those costs are: • Designer • Publishing guide • Copy Editor • Print on demand source (Ingram spark) • Release events (at least two) • Shipping of rewards. I don’t expect backers to completely underwrite the project, only to offset the cost and so to feel engaged in a not so ordinary literary project. Collections of poetry are very common, but a collection of essays or vignettes, short stories and poetry is not so common. Do play the video and listen to the two examples of my work. I plan to make further videos demonstrating the use of crowdfunding with this project as the example. I have a business background, and an analytical mind. I have already begun my social media program using Facebook, Twitter, Mailchimp and so on in a tightly scheduled roll out, and expect a healthy response.
Risks and challenges
Publishing is of itself a risky business. New titles are emerging every day, if not hour and so the competition for attention is fierce and poses a major challenge for not so deep pocket marketing budgets. The use of social media is of course useful, and I will use it. But adding my hard earned sales and marketing skills, connections with various arts organizations, my ability to make short but compelling promo. videos, and a network of colleagues around the world will also assist. I already started a gradual FB and Twitter campaign earlier the year and will ramp this up as this project goes forward; without spamming, of course!
Other small challenges in the early stages were the selection of an illustrator, copy editor and review panel and not least a good printer. all now overcome.
Whatever happens I plan to make frequent updates to the process and be as transparent as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
