What is my film about?
“In Search of Merlin Stone” is a documentary film. It’s also a book.
“In the beginning… God was a woman. Do you remember?” I can’t tell you how many women have told me, “When God was a Woman changed my life?!” Merlin Stone was a catalyst for global change (some might say radical change) in the way we think about religion and our feminine historical perspective to it.
In Search of Merlin Stone all started some five years ago. When I began my quest, I had no idea it would lead me to so many spiritual women. Ten years ago Merlin Stone, a very influential leader in women’s spirituality, suddenly disappeared. No one, not even her closest friends knew what happened to her. No one knew, until now!
I am making this documentary film about the significant events and contributions in the life and times of Merlin Stone and the other women who worked with her in the second wave of women’s spirituality. I have traveled all across the United States and to England to interview over 30 women who participated in the Women’s Spirituality Goddess Movement – including some very famous faces. The life and times of Merlin Stone was a momentous time in modern history – beckoning to a more ancient Goddess path. It’s a story that needs to be told and digitized for future generations.
Why is this film important?
Religious equality for women is far from a reality, especially women practicing Matriarchal religions. In order to move forward and truly have equality we must embrace our her-story. Rejecting the word "Goddess" holds us back from ourselves and the divinity of Nature. Hearing and seeing the stories of what Merlin Stone and these other women did when they advanced the Goddess Thealogy will change the way you view the world and your existence in it.
These women have a rich history full of dramatic stories, tough fights, and huge successes. In order to create equality for women in religion, we must honor the work done during the Women's Spirituality Movement.
So far, I’ve completed the start of this work with seed money gifted to this project by Merlin Stone’s family. They believe in this project. The cinematographers who shot the interviews did so for free. This film is a labor of love for all of us. We’d like you to show this film some love, and help us complete our project and its marketing.
Who is in the film?In my film I have interviews with Academy Award winning actress Olympia Dukakis, and feminist activists Gloria Steinem and Kate Millet. I also have interviews with Margo Adler, Selena Fox, Ruth Barrett, Starhawk and Susun Weed. My narrative voice comes from Zsuzsanna Budapest. Impact stories by Carol Christ, Karen Tate, Ava Carpenter, Lady Olivia Robertson, Vicki Noble and Kathy Jones. Personal stories of friendship by Leonard Schneir (Merlin’s life-partner), Linda Perry Barr, Donna Henes, and many more. This is just a sampling of the good folks in my film, and writing for the book.
How far along is the film?I am finalizing interviews, traveling to film and reviewing tape. Next comes the artistic talents of the editing process. In order to finish this film, I have to complete the following:
1. Purchase any archival footage.
2. Film all interviews.
3. Film the Merlin Stone Benefit Memorial Service.
4. Edit all the film to tell the story of Merlin and her spiritual sisters.
5. Compose original music for the film.
6. Title designs for the final text in the film.
7. Design the DVD jacket.
8. Design the DVD disk face.
9. Proof and publish it.
10. Market the DVD to a global audience.
What about the book?Images and writings are being gathered. Women are coming forward with their personal stories and detailing the impact that Merlin Stone had on their lives. Some of the writings will be unpublished works by Merlin Stone herself. There’s also a call for white papers detailing Merlin Stone’s impact on women’s spirituality. What doesn’t make it into the film, will make it into the book. In order to finish this book, I have to complete the following:
1. Gather all the archived documents and scan them into text.
2. Document the Merlin Stone Benefit Memorial Service.
3. Write, line edit and then copy edit the materials.
4. Design the book cover.
5. Scan, digitize and restore old photos to print quality.
6. Layout the book and begin the publishing process.
7. Proof and publish it.
8. Market the book to a global audience.
Can we exceed the goal amount?Yes. Please! YES! We’re asking the minimum to get funded. We really do need a lot more; and if more is raised, it will help cover travel expenses, equipment, plus producing and marketing the film both in the USA and internationally. The Women's Spirituality Movement is an inspiration to all women globally. Your donation makes all the difference!
Can I make a Tax Deductible
contribution to the film?
Yes! The film is produced by the Women’s Spirituality Forum a 501©3 Non-profit.
