About this project
What started as an argument over table tennis in a garage has become the Portable Electronic Scoreboard.
This is a connected portable scoreboard, and is designed for every sport or activity that you can count, score, or time. It will make your games awesome. Plus, you can hack it to do other stuff.
Make everything count
With super bright digits, you can read the scoreboard from the other side of a field. Use it for scoring or timing, with a settable countdown timer or a count up timer.
It's perfect for pickup games, sports leagues, schools, gyms, frats, or homes.
Connect it to anything
Scoreboards shouldn't be difficult to use or distract from the game. That's why the Portable Electronic Scoreboard has lots of ways of interacting with it, so you can connect and automate whatever you're doing.
Buttons on top
This is the most basic interaction. Six buttons on top that can be used to control everything. No setup is required and it works every time.
Now you don't need to go to the scoreboard every time to change it. Just a simple remote that is easy to use.
Set the scoreboard up on a table and connect it to a computer. Or use a script to have the display show some other statistic, like web hits or facebook friends or whatever you want to measure.
Connect to a computer or your smartphone. Control the scoreboard from the audience or on the field. Use the phone to post updates automatically to social networks.
Connect switches that integrate directly with your sport. Put switches under your ping pong table that change the score automatically, or place the waterproof mat at the end of a pool and track lap times or number of laps. Put a mat on the finish line of a track or count situps, or use a foot pedal. The options are endless.
Put it anywhere
- Hang on a wall
- Mount on a tripod
Use the Open API to write your own software to interact with the scoreboard to show Twitter followers, web hits, live scores of games, whatever you want. You have complete control over every segment of the display.
Build your own custom switches to track your activity. Share your designs and software with others. The forum and wiki have all the specs you need to make your own switches for interacting with the scoreboard.
I like playing games and sports, but I don't like when everyone forgets the score. I wanted something I could use for all my sports that could travel with me and not get in the way of the game. When I bring a prototype to places, people feel like the game is more important and pro, and they rely on the scoreboard almost immediately. I want everyone to have that. Everyone forgets the score constantly. You don't have to!
Where we're at
There are a few prototypes in the wild right now, being tested and played with regularly. The design of the insides is complete, with lots of effort to improve battery life, add features, reduce cost, and make manufacturing easy.
I've been working with industrial designers and manufacturing engineers on the rest. We have a design, and we've prototyped it using different methods, but tooling for mass production is expensive, and we can't do it without preorders.
For the last three months I've been in China, working on prototypes and designs with factories and engineers. I've managed to reduce the cost of each unit significantly and improve the manufacturability and robustness of the design. I've picked out a couple ethical factories and manufacturers that I'd like to work with, and have their support.
- It will take 1000 pre-orders to get the cost of components down.
- Tooling and setting up the assembly line, which is expensive for parts as large as these.
- Transportation of a product this large (and by large I mean much bigger than a watch) isn't cheap, and the cost of materials and the shipping weight of the materials (2 pounds each x 1000 orders means at least 1 ton of shipping!).
- Licensing and approvals for Bluetooth, USB, FCC, UL, CE, and other required certifications.
$30: Hey, this is clever! You want one of these! It is a t-shirt with chalkboard material on the front. We are even including chalk! Now YOU can be the scoreboard. Keep score right on your front. Machine washable. Shipping to the U.S. is included, but please add $10 for international shipping.
$125: Early-bird pre-order. Thanks! You got a fancy new scoreboard cheaper than everyone else because you're so smart. Shipping to the U.S. is included, but please add $20 for international shipping.
$150: On-time-bird pre-order. Thank you, too! You are still getting one cheaper than retail, so you're savvy. Shipping to the U.S. is included, but please add $20 for international shipping.
$400: Be remembered as a special limited contributor with your name printed on the circuit board. A photo of the back will be included. This is also a pre-order for one of the units. Please add $20 for international shipping.
$1300: A pre-order for 10 units. The scoreboard is great for leagues, schools, or gyms, so why not get a bunch and give them to each team, or put them in each room? Every sport, extracurricular activity, and meeting room is going to want one. Save some money and order them now. Please add $100 for international shipping.
What is included in a pre-order? Inside the box is a scoreboard, a remote control, a power cord, and a AA battery case (batteries not included).
How much battery life does it get? The battery pack plugs into the side, which means you can have a AA pack, or for really long life use C or D batteries. Battery life varies wildly. At full brightness it will last roughly 3 hours. At 1/3 brightness it should last 8.
How durable is it? The case is super strong with a fancy grip around the edge that resists scratches and dings.
How big is it? At roughly 18"x10"x2", it should fit in your backpack. And at about 2 pounds, you'll barely notice it in there.
Is it waterproof? Not waterproof, but definitely water resistant. Don't worry about setting it up in mud or having some rain fall on it or getting it splashed near a pool.
How loud is the buzzer? Smoke alarm-ish. You'll hear it. You can make it quieter.
You could totally use this for... yes!!! The modes built in should cover just about every sport, and if there's a sport or activity it can't be used for, I want to hear about it. With the buttons, remote, USB, Bluetooth, and custom switches, it's easy to connect to and interact with the scoreboard for anything you want.
