As a stuffed animal in a child’s collection of toys, you and up to three friends must defend the Nightlight from terrible creatures that are trying to snuff it out. Arm yourself with your unique deck of skill cards and the weapons you salvage from the toy chest to fight back the creepy-crawlies and unknown shapes threatening the dream that gave you strength. Survive three rounds, and you win!
Fight hard, but don’t let the changing nature of dreams distract your stuffed animal and give the Nightmare an opportunity to strike!
Nightlight is an exciting and fantastical card game inspired by fear. Even as an adult, stories about Candle Cove, the Rake, and Where Bad Kids Go fuel our nightmares, forcing us to stay awake with the lights on (just a little longer). We haven’t outgrown ghost stories, but we have outgrown the belief that if we hide under the blanket with our stuffed animal—our silent sentinel—that nothing bad will happen to us.
Nightlight is a stand-alone card game. Everything you need to play, including all cards, tokens, and dice, come right out of the box.
The goal of the game is to survive three rounds. Players begin by choosing a stuffed animal, which comes with its own unique skill deck and special ability! The dream you defend that night will determine which nightmare enemies will compose the Nightmare deck, and therefore, what threats the players will face, allowing players to tackle higher difficulties once they get used to the easier dreams.
Each round, the stuffed animals raid the child's toy chest for items they can use to fend of the Nightmare as it encroaches relentlessly toward the Nightlight.
After a tense period of battle, in which both sides unleash their magical abilities and attempt to destroy one another, both sides mend their wounds, and prepare for the next round.
Once three rounds have taken place, as long as one stuffed animal still survives, the sun has risen and all players have won!
The modular construction format of the Nightmare deck ensures that the players will never face the same threat twice. Three sets of Dream cards determine which enemies make up the Nightmare deck in addition to the basic enemies that appear in each game, allowing players to choose a difficulty setting, as well. Additionally, each round, a new Dream card is flipped, revealing a new weakness the stuffed animals must face.
Nightlight is flavored by 27 watercolor illustrations by Katherine Cook that evoke both the cute and the creepy. When we were creating Nightlight, we knew that hand-drawn illustrations would add an element of nostalgia and imagination that only physical mediums can.
During the final days of our campaign, we'll be adding various upgrade options for our backers. All of these add-ons are Kickstarter exclusives, so make sure to take advantage of these while you can!
Shipping is free for all US backers! Back the game, get a copy. No extra charges later on! The same goes for every pledge that includes extra goodies!
Shipping to Canada is $18.
Shipping to the UK is $25.
For all other international customers, a shipping fee of $30 is added to your pledge for shipping. Only the $35 pledge levels and lower are available for international customers.
If you and a few friends are going to back the project, please inquire about international group shipping rates. Multiple copies of the game can fit into one flat rate USPS box, so as a long as they are shipping to the same address, there is a possibility that we can provide cheaper shipping by grouping multiple pledges into one shipment.
BNKB Games started as a few friends making a game as a summer project. Brandon Higley, a student of Criminal Justice, and Nicholas Tapia, a public school teacher, are both gamers who met through a mutual friend, and immediately began to work on games! They are both avid Kickstarter users who have backed almost a dozen gaming projects. Katherine Cook is an artist specializing in woodblock print and watercolor who currently works as a graphic designer for an organic food distributor. Brandon Horvath is studying to earn his degree in Graphic Design.
The Game Crafter (TGC) is the world’s first web-to-print game publishing company and offers a print on demand game publishing service. TGC empowers game designers around the world by allowing them to make a board game, card game, and custom playing cards through a website. Using the latest web technology, TGC developed an online publishing platform that simplifies the design, manufacturing, and retail processes related to tabletop games.
TGC is located in Madison, WI, which means that every copy of Nightlight is made in and ships from the US.
Risks and challenges
This is our first Kickstarter project. Obviously, that creates its own risks and challenges. However, the production and manufacturing of Nightlight is being handled by The Game Crafter, which has been around for five years and published over 50,000 games. Once this campaign has concluded, our orders will be submitted to them via their bulk order system and each copy of the game will ship directly from their production facility in Madison, Wisconsin. Customer service issues will also be handled by their devoted staff.
Development of the basic game Nightlight is complete, but successful funding of this project will allow us to commit more time and energy to polishing and testing improvements we didn't have a chance to implement during our initial design phase, as well as improvements added by meeting stretch goals. We expect turnaround to be short, and we promise to keep all of our backers informed with rules spotlights and production updates through delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
