On behalf of the faculty and staff of Masamune Shining Forge Academy, it is with great pleasure that we inform you of your admission to Masamune. You were selected from an incredibly competitive and capable group of applicants, and showed an intense devotion to creating weapons worthy of legend.
Masamune is a game for two to four players, and takes place over the course of an academic year at Masamune Shining Forge Academy. As a pupil at Masamune Shining Forge Academy, you and your opponents will start the game with identical 12-card decks. Over the course of the game, you will forge sentient weapons called Chibis and teach them powerful special techniques to defend the Academy from attacking monsters. Chibis can also help you earn more powerful cards for your deck, forcing you to choose whether to forge your Chibis or use them to build your deck!
Just like normal schools, Masamune Shining Forge Academy uses Exams to measure its pupils’ academic growth. Every time a new card is added to your deck, there is a chance that the next card drawn from the Academy deck will be an Exam, an intense battle staged by your instructors that lures the monsters teeming in the surrounding forest to attack the Academy! After the fifth and final Exam is completed, the school year is over, and the pupil who harvested the most monsters has won the game!
Four Playable Characters!
Before the game begins, you must choose which pupil to play as. Each pupil has the same starting deck, but has its own unique powers it can learn, and then teach to their Chibis, over the course of the game.

Your army of Chibis will learn awesome techniques inspired by your favorite anime, and take on the traits of your pupil. Attract the attention of your senpai, sacrifice yourself in one explosive blast, or unleash a devastating move you've been powering up for episo--turns!
Harvest the Most Monsters to Win the Game!
After the fifth Exam is resolved, the game is over. Each player counts the number of monster cards in their collection to determine their grade, and the player with the highest grade wins the game!
Our Game Designers
Brandon Higley and Nicholas Tapia have been making games together for over a year. Our first Kickstarter project was Nightlight, which started as a summer hobby project, but at the suggestion (or, more accurately, at the insistence) of our weekly game group, we launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for it. Our backers’ rewards have all been fulfilled, and we are eager to release Masamune, our sophomore game.
Sarah Cheney is an anime and manga artist who has been involved with the Florida convention circuit for the last 12 years. She specializes in chibi and traditional anime styles, and is happy to bring her unique touch to the illustrations for Masamune.
Katherine Cook did all of the artwork for Nightlight, our previous project, and has been working with watercolor and woodblock print mediums for the last 10 years.
Our number one goal is to get our game to every backer as soon as we can. Based on past experience, and in order to give our backers the best shipping rates we can, shipping fees will be charged after the successful funding of this campaign and handled by our pledge manager. As a rough estimate, the game will cost about $7 to ship in the USA, about $15-25 to Canada, and about $30-40 to anywhere else.
Regarding international backers, the declared value of Masamune will be $50. All VAT fees and other import fees will be the responsibility of the backer.

Once our campaign is successfully funded, Sarah and Katie will hit the ground running with artwork for Masamune. Most of the character and monster designs are already done, which just leaves illustrating them doing awesome anime-type things! Nicholas and Brandon have some minor playtesting to do, mostly focusing on ensuring that each character and card is balanced and that all of the game’s text makes sense.
That process should be fairly short, and once it’s complete, we will send our print files to Panda Games Manufacturing so they can begin manufacturing and then shipping Masamune!
Risks and challenges
This is our second Kickstarter project. For our first project, Nightlight, we offered ambitious stretch goals and operated on a razor-thin margin. But, most importantly, all of our backers have received their rewards; we are proud of what we accomplished, and we learned valuable lessons from our first campaign.
First, we won't promise stretch goals that require intensive post-campaign design and testing. We want Masamune to be ready to manufacture as soon as possible, once this campaign is successfully funded.
Second, we are working with Panda Games Manufacturing, a large manufacturer responsible for amazing games like Mice & Mystics, Dead of Winter, Bioshock Infinite, and Tiny Epic Kingdoms. This is the first time we've worked with such a large-scale manufacturer, but with their support we're confident that the process will go smoothly. We will have longer manufacturing times than we did for Nightlight, but as a result, Masamune will be of the highest possible quality.
Despite our experience, however, there still may be setbacks. The estimated delivery date is June 2016, but keep in mind that this is only an estimate. We pledge to stay in contact with Panda throughout the entire delivery process so that we can avoid delays, or resolve them as quickly as possible if any do arise.
We are dedicated to transparency, and will keep our community updated through regular updates both during and after the campaign. Brandon, who managed Nightlight's funding campaign, will be our community manager again, and looks forward to hearing from our awesome community!
