About this project
We all love the mobility of laptop, but it doesn’t mean we have to hunch over it all the time or give up the comfort of a workstation setup.
We are becoming increasingly multi-tasking, but it doesn’t mean we have to be switching back and forth between cluttered windows, apps and devices.
Desktop Stool is designed and crafted to help you work better with a right posture and with all of your devices, now and the future.
(See our product page for compatibility and other details.)
 : PROTOTYPING
As great as we thought the concept was, we were unsure if people would feel the same. So we decided to make a rough prototype and show it at Macworld 2013 along with our existing product.
[MARH 2013] : PRAISED. DECIDED TO START DEVELOPMENT.
To our surprise, the Desktop Stool prototype received remarkably positive responses at Macworld 2013. So we decided to continue the development to further explore the concept.
[AFTER APRIL 2013] : FAILURE AFTER FAILURE
The development has been technically challenging, especially designing and making the CNC-machined mold and get it working to actually produce wooden Desktop Stool that meets our quality standard. We have gone through a couple of complete do-overs, several big modifications, many failed prototypes, and not to mention, countless hours of working with the engineers and craftsmen.
[TODAY] : READY TO PRODUCE... ALMOST...
After two years, we have finally managed to build a production setup capable of producing Desktop Stool in a fairly large quantity while maintaining the quality. What we have left to do is to procure raw materials to start the first production run. And to Kickstart this, we need first owners = YOU.
This project is only for the first run of 300 units
We would love for everyone who finds Desktop Stool to his/her liking to back this project. However, due to the handmade process and our limited production capacity, 300 is the maximum number that we can handle in one production run and deliver within a reasonable time frame. We may lose many opportunities by keeping our capacity small, but it is not our intention to expand our business beyond our direct control and quality assurance.
Kickstarter and Schedule
Given this Kickstarter project is successful in November, we will start producing right away and finish in February, pack them, and then ship to individual backers (via Japan Post Air service) which we expect to take up to one month, depending on where you are. Also note that you may need to pay import duties depending on your country, which is not covered by your pledge.
Important notice: In the pledge menus, it says "fee shipping worldwide", but it's actually "free shipping worldwide". Shipping is FREE worldwide. Sorry about the typo!
Risks and challenges
<< TRACK RECORDS >>
We introduced our fist product Desktop Chair through a crowd-funding project in 2011 which we completed with timely delivery of the product to our backers. To date, we have managed to produce thousands of Desktop Chairs as the product has continued to satisfy new owners throughout the world. All of our production takes place at our partner furniture factory who has worked closely with us from the beginning and has developed the mastery it takes to meet the high quality standard.
<< DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE >>
Indeed, developing Desktop Stool has been very challenging, especially designing and making the CNC-machined mold and get it working to actually produce Desktop Stool that meets the standard, but we passed that phase and arrived to the point where we need first owners helping Kickstart the first production run.
<< PRODUCTION CHALLENGE >>
Having said this, the biggest challenge will be producing sufficient quantity on schedule. Despite the modern production process, rounding the edges and finishing on the sleek curvature cannot be done without the hands of a craftsman. We have built in extra time for the production process and are confident that we will ship by the projected dates. We will always keep you informed if things take longer than planned.
