We all have our defining moments, the ones we can look back to and know exactly when things have changed.
Like many of us, Prince accounts for a few of mine. When he entered my life, alongside my husband; when he blessed my work, by using it in shows, or buying some; or the last show I saw, at the Sydney Opera House.
Prince and only Prince.
It's my vision of Prince: not always accurate, yet always true.
It's not chronological. It's anachronistic, even.
He didn't believe in the concept of time. This book doesn't either.
It's Prince, but it's also a fantasy character, like the ones he would invent for us.
It's a kaleidoscope.
This book is an album of illustrations.
("Albums... remember those?" I, too, am old school)
Through his gestures, expressions, faces, I try to pierce through his look, solve the mystery, touch his soul.
I try to get close enough, intimate enough, that we have a glimpse of how he felt when he was on stage.
It's the book I would have made if he had asked me to create one.
It's the book I would have wanted to buy: different from any other you can find out there.
The title will be familiar to many of you:
I love the many meanings and the fact that he was mostly using it during live performances–my main inspiration for the illustrations.
"It's a hard MF to stop… but on the one."
Any good book must have its foreword. Well, On The One is not just a good book, it's a great book. Ida Nielsen will write the foreword of my book.
If you were stuck in a cave for the last decade, Ida was Prince's bass player. She was part of both the NPG and the 3rdEyeGirl bands. Ida is an amazing artist and one of the most beautiful person I ever met.
In my mind, it could have been no one else than Ida.
It's not just a book. Not even an art book.
It's an artist book. And a huge one at that.
Quality will be like nothing you've ever seen.
If you know me, or ever bought something from me, you know I don't say that in a hyperbolic way. I mean it.
First, it's huge (yes, it's worth saying again): 44x34 cm (≈17x13 in).
See an A3 sheet? Well, it's larger. 15% larger.
Then there is the cover. Hardcover, gold hot foil on fabric.
Forty sheets of 250gsm heavily textured paper.
Printed on the latest breed of industrial printers.
Handmade Japanese stab binding, with a lace.
Each copy will be numbered by hand.
The few text snippets will be set in a Pantone® colour.
Can you guess which?
It is, itself, a piece of art.
This edition is unique and limited.
It's like nothing out there, and will be the crown jewel of your collection.
It will also make a very very special gift, for a special Prince fan in your life (I know, I created it for the special fan in my life).
Although not limited in number, this edition is limited in time. It's available until November 2, 2017. That's it.
For the edition to exist, to reach the campaign's goal, we need to get pre-orders (pledges) for at least 250 books.
Each copy will be numbered by hand, making them unique.
The fabrication process is rather long. The books will be shipped in the order of their pledge. The first hundreds of pledge will receive it before the holiday season. So even if the Early Bird editions have run out, don't wait.
By pre-ordering early, you also help to ensure the goal will be reached: your pledge will motivate others to place theirs.
Read on to have all the details, and pledge now. You won't regret it :)
It's my fairy tale...
In 2014, I was contacted by Prince's team: He wanted to buy some of my art. "I know first hand he loves your work", is what they wrote.
It was the beginning of a colourful, funky adventure.
It led to other projects, prematurely and sadly interrupted.
The larger one was redesigning Paisley Park's main recording studio.
More recently, I worked with Paisley Park to create a new illustration for the one-year anniversary of the museum.

As for myself, well, I've been painting pretty much my whole life (and let's say I'm old enough to have 2 kids that will soon be taller than me…)
From my studio in Bondi Beach - Australia, where I moved 4 years ago, I paint about pop culture, or commissions for brand, or, you know, Prince ;)
Prince came into my life when I married the nerdiest of his fans. 20 years, later, let's say: purple rubbed off on me ;)
In France, after studying fine arts and industrial design, I worked as a designer for brands like Fila and L'Oréal, and eventually came back to my first passion: painting.
Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform. You can "pledge" for the level you choose–see that as a "pre-order". If the amount of the pledges reaches the minimum goal (roughly 250 books), then you're charged, and I get to produce the book. Otherwise, you don't pay anything and we go our separate ways.
For me, it means no publisher, no editor, no middleman. Directly from me, the artist, to you, the fans (with the help of a bunch of wonderful, talented, professional people), without betting the house (that I don't have anyway) on the project.
I realised along the journey that it gave me the very same freedom Prince fought for, his whole career.
Depending on how involved or exclusive you want to be, you have a few options:
I have only one stretch goals so far: I don't dare to pretend I would need more (I do have a few ideas though, challenge me !).
So tell your friends, your lovers, your family, your neighbours… to pre-order a wonderful book, and make it even more fabulous.
The goal is to have the books delivered in time for the holiday season.
It's tight, but we should make it: assuming the campaign is successful, the book should go to print early November, for a shipping early December. Shipping is done via courier, under 5 days.
Did I say tight?
Because the binding process is manual, there is an incompressible time of production per copy. For that reason, should the goal be exceeded, only the first 500 copies would reach their backers in time for the holidays. First backed, first served.
The Books are first plastic-wrapped, then dressed in a sleek custom-made box, then packed for shipping, ensuring the safest travel possible.
They will all be shipped from France, where they are made, via courier. We have chosen the best courier depending on destinations.
It is not cheap to ship a 2kg, 45x35cm box, under 5 days, around the world. We have worked very hard to make it as low as possible, and included it in the price of every reward so we can actually take a part of it on ourselves.
Orders outside the EU might be required to pay for customs.
Sadly, I can't do much about that (you know: "death & taxes"). The value on the custom label will be set to the minimum reasonable amount, way under the actual value, to try and avoid any customs fees upon receiving the package.
But I cannot guarantee it will be tax-free, sadly.
The price is more than for most book you will find out there. That's because the book will really be a thing of wonder. The binding and numbering are done by hand, the paper is super thick and textured, and did I mention: it's going to be huge.
At the goal level, I don't make any profit, not even a compensation for the 6 months of work invested. Everything goes into production.
The cost of a book, once accounted for the Early Birds and rewards, is roughly composed of:
- 75% Printing & Prepress
- 10% Marketing (video, advertising, promotion)
- 10% KickStarter and Credit Card fees
- 5% "Just in case" cushion (that every good KickStarter campaign should have).
Shipping represents a significant part of each reward level.
Like any KickStarter campaign, this project will not live without the support of the community.
But more than that, I wish for this book to reach more than just the fans. Everyone should know how beautiful Prince is.
There is only so much I can do to get the word out, but you can help.

Although I have very official business with Paisley Park and the Estate, this project is not one of them.
I have received a tremendous amount of help while building this project. Thank you again and again, LV, Fred, Rob, Kim & Casey, Phyllis, Jeremiah, Lee, Guv, Craig.
Thank you also to all the backers. You are the reason any and all of this exists.
Risks and challenges
Risk is minimal.
It's all about experience.
And as it happens, my husband has more than 15 years of experience in the print industry. He's handling all things prepress.
The printing itself is taken care of by one of the industry leaders. They will also manage logistics and shipping.
Timing is actually where most of the "risk" is.
At the time of writing (start of the campaign), all illustrations are done, the layout of the book is almost complete. The plan is to be able to roll right after the end of the Kickstarter campaign. Crafting a book like this one takes time though, the process has a lot of moving parts, some hand made.
But all in all, let's face it: it's a book, not a rocket ship. It's an industry that's been mastered for quite some time.
So yeah, there is no such thing as risk zero, but we're closing in.
