We are Blue Forest Collective, and we are making KARIBA: The Graphic Novel.

  • KARIBA is a fantasy-adventure graphic novel inspired by the mythology and history surrounding the construction of one of the largest dams ever built in southern Africa.
  • KARIBA will be a 9”x12” 100+ page, full color book in both soft cover and limited edition hard cover.
  • KARIBA is being drawn and colored by Daniel Clarke, and being designed and written with help from the team at Blue Forest Collective.
  • We are scheduled to be finished the book by the end of September 2016, and have it shipped out to backers in January 2017.

WHAT IT'S GOING TO LOOK LIKE:

The world of Kariba is one in which history and fact are fused with mythology and legend. A world where the laws and rules are bent by magic and the river is as much a character as it is a force of nature.

Our story follows Siku and Amadeo, one the daughter of the river spirit Nyami Nyami, the other the son of the engineer in charge of the dams construction. Unaware of who her father is Siku must journey upriver to discover the answers to the mystery of her powers, and the strange events occurring in the river and its surrounding forests.

A growing respect and friendship develops between Siku and Amadeo as they are thrown together on an adventure where they are pursued by river pirates and must overcome obstacles both real and magical.

We are inspired by the works of Miyazaki, Moebius, Craig Thompson, Jeff Smith and Alex Alice. They are able to use the medium of comics and graphic-storytelling to create massive, rich, compelling worlds, filled with complex and intriguing characters, and we are aiming for Kariba to follow in this tradition.

Siku is not only the wilful young girl that she appears to be, but the daughter of a god, Nyami Nyami, the sacred River Spirit of the Zambezi. Though she has fallen in with Rock Hudson’s river pirate crew, she can ignore her visions no longer and, with the help of Amadeo, must heed the call to reunite her mother and father.

Amadeo is Lia’s kind but headstrong son. Like his mother, he has a skill for inventions and a love for adventure.

Lia is a strong and resourceful Italian engineer, and has come to Africa to help tame the Zambezi and build the Kariba dam after the passing of her husband during the war.

Captain Rock Hudson is a megalomaniacal pirate, caught between trying to take over the Zambezi and having to follow the orders of his mother, the mysterious matriarch of the river pirates.

All of us at Blue Forest are extremely serious about quality: Not only quality storytelling, but also quality delivery, which means that the book we want to make for you is not going to be cheap to produce…

FORTUNATELY! We have been made an enormously generous offer by Triggerfish Animation Studios (where most of us met), to match 50% of whatever we can raise on Kickstarter, without them taking any equity or creative control! They are basically saying: we like this, we want you guys to succeed, let's make it happen!

Bottom line: we can ask you guys for much less, and not compromise on quality or Dan's creative vision!

Printing & Shipping: $10,000 -This covers the printing of the books, and shipping within the USA. As we are based in Cape Town, we’ll be using a Kickstarter approved perk-fulfillment agency to make sure backers get their swag on time, and in mint-condition! Backers outside the USA will have their shipping costs subsidised by the amount of shipping within the USA.

Production: Production: $5,550 ($15,500 less $10,000 Triggerfish contribution). This will cover time for the writing, layout, colouring, lettering, and editing of the book as well as preparing it for print. This number is going to be subsidised by Triggerfish’s generous contribution to the project (if we can reach our goal!)

Fees and contingencies: $4,500 (15%) This will cover Kickstarter and Amazon fees, international credit-card fees and contingencies for perk fulfillment.

TOTAL: $20,000

Director: Daniel Clarke

Daniel Clarke is a director, conceptual artist, illustrator and production designer who has built a reputation in South Africa over the past 8 years as a leader in his field. Completely self-taught, at the age of 23, Daniel was made production designer at Triggerfish Animation Studios on their second feature film, Khumba (Anthony Silverston, 2013).

Since then he has worked as an illustrator and art director for international feature films such as Chronicle (Josh Trank, 2012); The Giver (Philip Noyce, 2014); and Chappie (Neil Blomkamp, 2015). Most recently Daniel was the art director of the BBC animated Christmas Special Stick Man. He has also illustrated children’s books and trading cards for properties such as Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40K series.

He currently lives in Cape Town South Africa, and is hoping to focus on Kariba full time for most of 2016.

Animation director: Jac Hamman

Jac Hamman is an animator, illustrator and independent filmmaker living and working in Cape Town. He has worked at some of the top animation studios in South Africa on feature films, series and commercials. He has presented at Annecy International Animation Festival in France and most recently his short film 'Vroegherfs' has been selected for competition and will be screened at Monstra International Animation Festival in Portugal.

Jac will serve as animation director on the 2D animated film.

Co-director: Daniel Snaddon

Daniel Snaddon is an animation director and story-board artist of Scottish-South African and Chinese-Australian descent. He grew up very close to the Kruger National Park, one of the largest wildlife preserves in Africa, and was educated in Johannesburg, Brisbane and Paris.

Most recently, Daniel co-directed the BBC Christmas special Stick Man for Triggerfish Animation Studios. The film was garnered great reviews in the UK press and has been seen by over 9.2 million people over the Christmas period.

Daniel will be working as a story editor on the Kariba graphic novel, and will serve as co-director on the 2D animated film.

Campaign Manager: Sarah Scrimgeour

Sarah Scrimgeour is an independent 3d artist and animator from Johannesburg, whose student film: Big Game (2013) was a viral hit online, raking up over half a million views on Youtube and Vimeo. Having spent the past 3 years as a freelancer working on commercial projects in Cape Town, she is currently heading up the compositing team at Triggerfish Animation for Magic Light Pictures animated adaption of Roald Dahls’ Revolting Rhymes.

Sarah will be managing the Kickstarter campaign, and cracking the whip to ensure timely delivery of the goods to its backers.

The graphic novel is our first step to making a 2D animated feature film. If this campaign is successful, we will use the graphic novel to produce a screenplay, which we will take to market to find further funding.

This is the trailer we made that serves as a proof of concept for the look and tone of Kariba.

Kariba will be printed by the awesome team at Print Ninja!
