Message in a Bottle is a uniquely personalised children's adventure book to connect you with your little one.
- Your child’s name, address, and your personal message to them seamlessly become part of the story!
- Message in a Bottle will be a 40-page, high-quality full colour book printed in the UK. We are scheduled to finish the book by the end of July of this year and have it shipped to backers in August.
- Acclaimed children’s author Tom Percival and illustrator Tuire Siirainen have teamed up to create a personalised keepsake perfect for any milestone in your child’s life, or just as a way to say ‘I love you’.
- What makes it special?
- Kiki the bird has a message to deliver – a message for your child! Build excitement as you follow Kiki’s adventure around the world to deliver your personalised, heartfelt words.
- Build a bond between the child and the sender – parent, relative, or friend – through the unfolding mystery of the secret message in the bottle, crafted especially for the child and designed by you to create unforgettable memories.
- The story itself is a fun and educational journey that introduces animals from across the globe and lets your child follow Kiki’s progress from the shores of Hawaii to their own home!
- Use the natural inclusion of your message into this powerful story for messages of encouragement, celebration, motivation, or praise… whatever you choose will become a treasured memory!
Create a special message for your child and let Kiki find it in the story.
Kiki sets off on a trail of adventure to deliver the mysterious message to the child.
After a journey full of adventure, Kiki reaches her final destination.
Bond with your child in this exciting adventure, all centred around a message written by you! Message in a Bottle is a perfect keepsake for a little one, whether you are a parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt, godparent...
- Truly unique personalisation that involves both you and your child driving the narrative
- An engaging and educational story, featuring animals from around the world, who work together to deliver the unique message to your child.
- A gift experience that goes beyond the traditional picture book thanks to Kiki’s Kids Club, an online portal that adds a whole ton of interactivity to the story to further enhance your child’s reading skills!
- A 40-page, high-quality, full-colour book printed on thick, durable paper in the UK
For now, Kiki can only deliver your message to a child living in Europe, Russia, the Middle East and Africa. She is, however, studying the world map very hard to be able to bring this book to children in any country of the world. It might take her a little more time though!
As well as a beautifully designed traditional picture book, we are also creating the online ‘Kiki's Kids Club’ to combine the tactile experience of handling a treasured book with the interactive features of the web.
Kiki's Kids Club is an interactive kids' online portal that aims to enhance the Message in a Bottle experience by providing educational information about the story's animals.
- In Kiki's Kids Club, children can also complete fun quizzes about biology and geography and find all kinds of printable activity sheets!
- Children can learn about the animals behind the characters in a fun and engaging way. In the future, we also want to introduce interactive games that will help children to discover the route Kiki took to deliver the bottle.
- Our aim is to make Kiki's Kids Club an ever-expanding fun, free, and educational database about the animals of the world for all children (and grown-ups)!
Kiki's Kids Club 1.0 is expected to be ready at the same time as the book!
Message in a Bottle has the support of some very encouraging parental bloggers who have been giving us feedback to make the book even better! Many of them have written blog posts about their feelings about this project, and you will find the full posts over on the their blogs:
‘My boys LOVE seeing their own names in a book. What child doesn’t?’ - Expat Life with a Double Buggy
‘I just knew I wanted to be involved’ - Odd Socks and Lollipops
‘We are proud to support Message in a Bottle’ - The Mad House of Cats and Babies
‘This is one of the best children’s books I have ever seen!’ - Adventures with J

'How can you not love Kiki?' - Virtually All Sorts
‘What a brilliant idea! By adding a truly personalised message you get to capture a special moment in time forever...!’ - Diary of an Imperfect Mum
‘I’ve really enjoyed watching the book evolve and I am really excited to own my own.’ - Two Tiny Hand
We are an enthusiastic and creative group of people and this, our first project, has so far been entirely self-funded.
28 pages out of 40 have been completed!
It’s been a long journey for all us involved and we love Kiki dearly, so we need your help to take the next steps and bring her to life!
We want to produce as high-quality a product as we can, so this is what we have budgeted:
Production: 1000 EUR
This will help cover time for the layout, colouring of the remaining illustrations, cover design and preparing the book for print as well as the font license fees.
Printing & Shipping: 1000 EUR
This covers the printing and shipping of the books in Europe.
Fees: 200 EUR
This covers Kickstarter and payment processing fees.
If we are lucky enough to receive pledges beyond our goal, any further funds will be used to enhance your child's reading experience by further developing Kiki's Kids Club, where they can learn more about the animals behind the story and the route she took to deliver the important message to your child's window!
Message in a Bottle is being created by an enthusiastic team of professionals who teamed up with one simple vision: to create an inventive, unique, and memorable book to bring joy to children and adults alike.
The sender of the book and the child are both integral to the fun and adventurous story and the important climactic message. Who wouldn't want to be part of a story?!
Unlike many other personalised books, Message in a Bottle is not solely about the child. There is a rich and detailed account of a journey that includes them. We believe that featuring the child as a central element, but not as the main character, allows them to empathise and see adversity and challenge through someone else’s eyes. This helps them to develop understanding, foresight and compassion, whilst still being thrilled to be included in the book.
Message in a Bottle has been greatly inspired by expat, global lifestyles. Living far away from precious new additions to our families challenged us to create a story that would bring two people together in a truly surprising and unforgettable way – where both of them can be part of the action!
We want to continue developing inventive, fun and memorable children's books that bond little and big readers together. There are also plenty more stories for Message in a Bottle to explore that we can’t wait to create - how about an adventure through tropical Asia?
Tuire Siiriainen: Creator and illustrator. Tuire has always been passionate about drawing and loves using her illustrations to tell stories that are extra special and unique.
Originally from Finland, she has travelled and worked in many countries around the world. Today she resides in Luxembourg and is working extremely hard on making Message in a Bottle a reality to connect adults and children worldwide.
Tom Percival: Our author. Tom writes and illustrates picture books and has also produced covers and internal illustrations for the Skulduggery Pleasant series.
Tom has been drawing since he's been able to hold a pencil, and making up stories for as long as he can remember, in fact, probably longer, especially as his memory is not what it once was!
Basically, he's been making things up his whole life and he's not about to stop anytime soon.
Judith Paskin: Our editor. By the age of five, Judith had taken possession of most of her family’s library cards and could frequently be found staggering up to her bedroom with a precarious stack of books in her arms. From Alice’s Wonderland to fantastical Narnia, every book held an adventure waiting to be discovered, often by torchlight at night, much to the annoyance of her older sister who slept in same room.
Sadly, Judith couldn’t hide under the bedclothes reading forever and eventually braved the ‘real world’ to earn her living, first as a BBC Radio Producer and then as an editor of children’s books.
She has worked with authors including Julia Golding, Katherine Langrish and Alan Snow. She has an MA in Publishing and also works as an Associate Tutor for the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies.
Verity Clark: Our book designer. Verity completed Foundation Studies in Art and Design at Kingston University before graduating from Leeds Met University with a degree in Graphic Arts. A former Senior Designer at Little Tiger Press she is now working freelance, commissioning lots of lovely illustrators on some very beautiful books as well as racing around after her two boys.
Verity specialises in children's publishing, with a great passion and love for picture books and anything else designed for little people. She enjoys creating fun typography to complement all the fabulous artwork she gets to work with and hopes others enjoy the books she helps make.
Szymek Drobniak Ph.D.: Our science consultant and the co-creator of Kiki's Kids club. Szymek holds a post-doc from the University of Zürich and a PhD. in evolutionary biology from the Jagiellonian University.
He loves to translate complex, scientific phenomena into child accessible language. Szymek won the 4th edition of FameLab designed to engage and entertain by breaking down science to a non-scientific crowd. He also performs scientific stand-up comedy! 'What is the easiest way to determine the sex of a chromosome? To pull down its genes!'
Victoria Welton: Our social media executive. Victoria is a poetry writer, photography enthusiast and lifestyle and parent blogger. She is also a keen traveller and has seen many beautiful parts of the world - although not quite as many as Kiki has!
She is thrilled to have been asked to be involved in this project. She believes that reading is a very important part of a child's education and to involve them in the way that Message in a Bottle does will not only enhance their experience but encourage them for the future.
Thank you for stopping by and for all your support. We hope you and your child will love this unique, adventurous personal book and share wonderful moments together while reading it!
Risks and challenges
This book is being created with a help of talented professionals who share the same passion - love for inventive storytelling. Between us we have extensive experience in delivering quality books to the market that have been loved by children and adults alike.
The text of the book has been written and edited but many illustrations still need to be completed (currently 28 out of 40 pages have been completed). We are working with an award winning digital printing house with cutting edge technology to astonish you with the finish of this very special book.
In May we started to develop our online platform with our friends at Soppo.co. The website is planned to be up and running in the beginning of August and will enable you to personalise and order your very unique book.
We are on track to deliver the book as planned and we are very confident that you will receive your copy within the promised deadlines. That is unless all the animals escape from the pages of the book... Now, how likely is that??Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
