- Research has shown that visual exposure to foods can increase the child's willingness to try them.
- Through positive association and fun activities we can encourage children to eat more fruits and vegetables.
- Educating our children about the origins and benefits of fruits and vegetables in the right way sparks their inborn curiosity to discover them further.
Tuire Siiriainen / Illustrator & Publisher
As an illustrator and children’s book publisher, I’ve been looking for the right time to create a children’s book about some of my biggest passions: healthy food, fruits and veggies, and cooking! Back in Finland, my vegetable “education” was mainly limited to potatoes, cabbage and cucumber.
I could blame the chilly latitudes or the price tag of imported veggies, but I believe the truth was far more egoistic: the fruits and vegetables were simply BORING. It was only at my later age (and in more central-European latitudes), when I discovered the overwhelming abundance of delicious plant-foods and how creative you can be with them. This has completely changed the way how I cook, eat and view the well-being of myself and my environment.
I want to share my love for the ‘greens’ in the best way I know: by creating an engaging story and discovery book that will, hopefully, have a permanent impact on children’s attitudes towards fruit and vegetables. I want to make the greens FUN.
Vesela Savova Drews / Diet & Nutrition Advisor
As a mother and nutritionist, it is of utmost importance to feed my family healthy and nutritious meals. Unfortunately, we hear the term “picky eater” way too often these days, and a “picky eater” has become the norm, rather than the exception. We all want our children to grow up healthy and happy.
Adding a fun, explorative and educational approach to the food our little ones consume can spark their curiosity. This in turn should hopefully make them more likely to try out new flavors and textures.
My goal with this book is to reduce the anxiety of meal refusal that is so familiar to parents, while generating a healthy curiosity in the child. Food can play a fun and educational part in storytelling.
By exploring the taste and texture of fruit and vegetables in a safe and familiar place at home, children should find it easier to connect with the same fruit and vegetables at the dinner table.
Creating a unique and engaging story that involves fruits and vegetables, and teaches children about their benefits in an entertaining way, is my way of contributing towards raising healthier and happy children.
Judith Paskin / Author
Growing up, I was one of those ‘fussy eaters’ we hear so much about, turning my nose up at peas, broccoli and anything else that was suspiciously healthy-looking. My wonderful older sister would frequently come to the rescue.
She had a very inventive way to get me to eat vegetables: she told me stories about them! My pile of mashed potato became a farmer’s field; the peas, sweetcorn and carrots were the crops he was growing, and it was harvest time. Before I knew it, I had ‘harvested’ everything on my plate straight into my mouth (and my sister was finally free to get down from the table!).
Eventually I grew to love all things fruit and veg: yes, even cabbage! When I became a mum myself, I remembered how effective storytelling could be and spent many happy hours inventing stories and exploring new flavours with my son.
I can proudly say that there isn’t a single fruit or vegetable that he doesn’t eat today! And funnily enough, I grew up with a passion for storytelling too.
So what a joy to be able to mix the two things in these special books! I had a lot of fun guiding DeeDee on her journey of discovery, creating characters that would hopefully inspire and delight readers as they shared their secrets about the superpower of food.
