THE REVIEWS ARE COMING IN

From Dad's Gaming Addiction - “Crootle” turned out to be pretty darned intense, despite its simplicity...”Crootle” is a very fast, very family-friendly experience that you won’t soon forget.  (Full review on Crootle.com or DadsGamingAddiction.com)  Watch the whole family play Crootle:

From Got Game Testers - A great family game!  Watch the full video review right here:

COMMENTS FROM PLAYERS OF CROOTLE

Crootle does a great job of allowing players of very different skill levels to play the same game and enjoy it. To me, those are the marks of a great game.        Wendell P.

Played several games with the Print and Play version today. Both sons pronounced this an "excellent game". I like games where the rules are quick to learn but the strategy takes time to develop. Well done!       David L.

Four of us played and we each thought we were winning...until three of us didn't! We played another five times back to back just so we could prove ourselves.       Cheryl A.

The last truly monster hit tabletop game was Apples to Apples.  Crootle is its successor.  Simply amazing!      Roland P.

My aging father insists we play Crootle when I come to visit him.  His eyes radiate eager anticipation.       Sheri B.

The only drawback from a family’s point of view is that it is for only four players at a time.  It’s addicting and we all want to play.

Official Rules of Play for CROOTLE

For printable version of rules in english click here.

OBJECT OF THE GAME is to be the first player to connect their two corners.

DESCRIPTION OF CARDS:

Color Tiles have 1 to 4 colors on them.  There are 112 of these in this standard 2 – 4 player deck. Example:

These are called COLOR TILES.
These are called COLOR TILES.

Corner Tiles are solid in color.  A set of these consists of one of each of the four colors in Crootle™.  There is a set for each player, and one for the game board. Example:

These are called CORNER TILES. One tile of each of the four colors makes a set.
These are called CORNER TILES. One tile of each of the four colors makes a set.

CROOTLE™ SET UP:

  • To set up the game board, place one set of Corner Tiles face down, and mix them. Unfold the Tree Saver Game Board™ and stretch it out to reveal numbers 1 - 16. Place one of the face down Corner Tiles above the number 1. Place the next Corner Tile FACE DOWN above the number 16. (1 - 16 is the basic board size.) Do the same with the last 2 Color Tiles to form a SQUARE playing area. (This will be 22" by 22"'.)
  • Picture of Tree Saver Game Board™ :
  • Each player now gets a set of Corner Tiles, places them face down, mixes them, chooses two, then places the other two out of the way (they won’t be used the rest of the game.)
  • Each player now turns up their two Corner Tiles and someone turns over the four corners of the game board. Each player now knows which two corners they need to connect to win. It is recommended that you keep your two corner colors in front of you so everyone knows your path (and so you don't forget).
  • Place the Color Tiles face down to the side of the marked out game area.  Mix well.

HOW TO TAKE YOUR TURN

To determine who goes first, each player draws one Color Tile.  The one with the highest number of same color quadrants goes first.  Put the pieces back in the pile face down. Example of who goes first:

First tile = 1 of each color. Second tile = 3 of one color. This one goes first.
First tile = 1 of each color. Second tile = 3 of one color. This one goes first.
  • For your first turn of the game, draw 10 tiles and place them in front of you face up.
  • Playing off either of “your” corners, match the tiles in your possession, side to side. The Color Tile must be matched at any point that a tile touches another tile. This includes corner point to corner point. All tiles are matched side to side, not diagonally.
  • If you use all of the tiles in front of you, you may draw 5 additional tiles, but only one time per turn.
  • At the start of each of your subsequent turns, draw 5 new tiles.
  • Each turn is a maximum of 2 minutes long, though a player can stop prior to that. If on your very first turn you cannot place at least one, your turn is over. (Relax! Next turn you start off with 5 more.)
  • Once your time is up, or you choose to stop, it is the next player's turn.

WINNING THE GAME

The game ends and is won when a player connects their two corners.

FUN VARIATIONS

Keep score

  • When a player connects their two corners, the round is over.
  • To tally the score, count each tile (including the corners) using the shortest distance between the two corners. Each tile scores 1 point. (It does not matter who placed them there.)
  • The tally also includes a bonus 2 points for each four-square** on the path, regardless of who placed it.  After totaling this number, add to it any tiles in front of your opponents, and then subtract any tiles in front of you.
  •  Once a predetermined number has been reached, for example 50 (50 points takes four players approximately 3 - 5 rounds), the game is over.

**Example of a four-square:

Optional Four-Square Bonus

  • When a player completes a four-square as shown above, they get to draw 2 additional Color Tiles and may do this as many times as they want in any one turn.

NOTES ON PLAY

● This type of matching of tiles is NOT ALLOWED:

This type of match is NOT allowed.
This type of match is NOT allowed.

● No trading of any tiles.

● No play allowed on a leg (corner color) that is not yours.

● You MAY play off any color tile on your leg no matter who placed it there.

● Once a tile is placed on the game board it cannot be moved. You may arrange your pieces in front of you all you like.

● It IS possible to have a game end in a stalemate. This means that all color tiles have been drawn and no winner declared. Everyone gets one final 2 minute (or less) turn after the last tile is drawn.  The person who drew the last tile is the very last to play - unless someone places a winning piece first!

● Timed turns: The 2 minute limit works well for up to 4 players.  You may choose to raise it - 2 1/2 minutes is a good pace, 3 minutes is a bit long for more than 3 players - or eliminate it, though doing so usually makes a game unnecessarily long. Play with the expansion deck should not exceed a 2 minute turn.

● Using #1 and #16 on the Tree Saver Game Board™: This is the ideal size for the number of cards in this deck.  Feel free to use other sizes.

● Even though a diagonal path is twice as far, tests show that it wins slightly more than half the time. That is probably due to the increased mobility.  Once you play, you'll see what that means.

FAQs

While in development, a lot of people wanted to know how the color combinations were chosen.  Here is that explanation.  A typical game is 16 tiles by 16 tiles.  This equals 256 squares on the board game.  The matrix used for this edition of Crootle™ uses four colors for a total possible combination of 256 color tiles. Of those 256 possible, 112 were selected to ensure the most wins yet with challenging pieces to keep the play interesting.

The expansion set will include the remaining 144 combinations for a more complex (yet still fun!) game. As mentioned before, it is likely the expansion set will be announced during this campaign.

Also of note: The game board edition will be for sale shortly as it fills the needs of certain players.  (Our tests have shown that some need the "real" board to help them focus better on direction. Usually these comments came from the senior crowd.)  It was not put into this project so that costs could be kept to a minimum.  Once you try the Tree Saver Game Board™  we think you'll agree, it saves a lot of paper and the lower priced game is nice for everyone.

Kickstarter funds needed for

Your kickstarter funds are needed for final art development, packaging design, and first run.  Naturally all Rewards and the fulfillment of them (shipping within the U.S.) as well as Kickstarter and Amazon fees have been figured into our project.

It is our full intent to ship all standard games of Crootle™ 2 weeks from funding.

Also under development for Crootle™

  • Crootle™ is currently for 2 - 4 players.  A larger configuration is under development that will allow up to 6 players.  It will require an expansion deck.  Details to be announced (possibly during this Kickstarter campaign).
  • The Gameboard version will be available shortly. It's great for keeping players in line when a little help is needed.
  • Also in the pipeline: Mobile applications for 2 - 4 players as well as a social media application that will blow you away! These will be launched in 2014.

Play without borders!
