Alex Hahn's Blop: Martian Explorer
A 40-page comic album of all-ages stories about Blop, a clumsy Martian scout who's just trying to make sense out of us humans!
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Mon, April 29 2019 10:59 PM UTC +00:00.
"The mishap-prone alien explorer trying to come to terms with humanity is a comedic treat"
-Andy Oliver, Broken Frontier
Blop is a Martian scout who is often tasked with missions to Earth. Unfortunately for Blop, he’s quite clumsy, very literal and frequently gets the wrong end of the stick -all of which lands him in plenty of trouble.
Being the only green Martian among the multi-coloured aliens -and with a preference for hands on, tactile, investigation over distant, clinical observation- poor Blop tends to stick-out from his Martian peers. Blop also has a penchant for knitwear …but more on that in the book!
I’ve been drawing Blop, in various forms, for many years now. He’s developed across several zines and comic-strips before reaching the right tone and type of stories I want to tell with Blop. This book, along with The Little Blop Book of COOL (Mini-comic, published in 2018) begins the canon of Blop stories.
Blop: Martian Explorer is a 40-page comic album that contains two stories and several strips.
In What On Earth Do You Mean? Blop is, reluctantly, sent to Earth and ends up living, under-cover, with a human family. He quickly finds out that many things we say can’t be taken at face value and his research definitely won’t be a piece of cake! At 19 pages long, this is the 'main story' of the book.
The second story, Blop’s Super Secret Mission begins with a seemingly routine research mission to Earth, but is soon revealed as part of a renegade Martian leader’s dastardly plan involving the underworld and lots and lots of ...snow. This story is 9 pages long.
Included, as a bonus, are several short stories that have appeared previously in anthologies and online. These have been updated and re-coloured to look their best and fit with the two longer stories.
Every story is made for an all-ages readership with the tone focusing on fun and adventure, blending science fiction and humour.

I did! But, for the many who have never heard of me: Hello, I’m Alex Hahn.
I’m an illustrator and independent publisher, based in the Buckinghamshire countryside. I have been self-publishing zines and comics for the last eight years and since 2013 have exhibited at some of the UK’s best comic cons and book fairs, such as: Thought Bubble, ELCAF, DIY Cultures or MCM.
As an illustrator I have worked with The Guardian, The Big Issue, Shortlist, The Financial Times and Starbucks, among others.
But enough about me, let’s get back to Blop!
I aim to go to production straight after funding is complete, to begin fulfilment of all the rewards as soon as possible. I will be using project updates to be transparent about the status of the artwork and fulfilment.
- Copies of Blop: Martian Explorer will arrive before the official launch on 7th June at ELCAF (East London Comics and Arts Festival),
- Postcards and the PDF versions of Blop: Martian Explorer will be able to be fulfilled first,
- Commission rewards will likely be the longest to fulfil as I will be working through these, in chronological order, after the book has gone to print.
Prior to launch: I am pencilling my way through What On Earth Do You Mean?, working from a finished script and rough/thumbnail layouts.
Blop’s Super Secret Mission is fully drawn, inked and has had flat colours applied; just requiring the shadows and highlights to be added.
The bonus stories are already finished, as is the cover and the end-papers.
These are all the tasty rewards awaiting you generous backers. Dig in!
Since my awesome backers have helped me reach the £500 goal, now is time for a stretch-goal!
If we can hit £600 I will add four extra pages to Blop: Martian Explorer!
But what will those pages be? Rest assured, they won’t just be filler; during this campaign I have written and thumbnailed a new four-page story: Blop and the Jet Sett (not a typo) which introduces a character that will feature prominently in the next Blop book I want to make.
So let’s smash that target and make this book a total of 44-pages (41, of which, will be comics!)
Risks and challenges
While my experience as a freelance illustrator makes me well equipped to meet deadlines, it is possible that unforeseen circumstances (like illness or injury, for example) could provide setbacks to finishing the artwork.
I have used Mixam to print several projects, so I am familiar with their workflow and timings. Errors or mistakes made in the production process could cause minor delays, but Mixam are generally very good and fast at sorting things out.
Brexit (yeah, can’t forget that…) may impact prices from manufacturers –for example, the paper may become more expensive- but rather than delays, this could be balanced out by ordering fewer units overall.
As mentioned, I will be constantly keeping backers in the loop via project updates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
