Lynn and the Spirits of Inao is a 2D platform-adventure game which combines a refreshing visual style inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s films (Spirited Away, Mononoke Princess), with the old school feel of the Super Nintendo/Mega Drive era. Freely explore the mysteries of the island of Inao with the open-world progression system in the vein of the Metroidvania, make your way through Mario and Rayman-style platform levels and enjoy a myriad of side quests. Our initial goal is to release Lynn and the Spirits of Inao on PC and Steam, but with your support, we will be able to release it on other platforms too!
In an enchanting and fun-filled universe, take the role of Lynn, the apprentice of the village’s High Priestess. Go on an adventure accompanied by Aku, a demon-like spirit, in order to unravel the mysteries of the island of Inao and appease its tormented souls.
- Control night and day in order to progress through levels and discover all the secrets of the island
Investigate the strange events causing turmoil on the island of Inao with the help of its inhabitants, both humans and spirits
- Make your way through dynamic platform levels and adapt your gameplay to the wide range of sceneries and enemies
- Sharpen your wits by solving enigmas and puzzles
- Take on bosses in epic battles which will require skill and thought in order to defeat your enemy
- Be discreet during tactical or infiltration phases
Finish the game by following the main scenario, or complete it 100% by solving the many side quests, not forgetting a single lost soul and unveiling all the mysteries of Inao.
Gods and spirits have always lived in harmony with humans on the island of Inao, but one day, for reasons unknown, spirits began attacking the island’s inhabitants. The High Priestess of the village, with the help of her disciple Lynn, attempted a mysterious ritual in order to send the lost souls back to the other world. However, something went wrong, leaving the Priestess gravely injured and the ceremony incomplete, revealing a far greater danger...
Now entrusted with protecting the village, the young and clumsy Lynn sought to discover the origin of this evil, and in doing so crossed paths with Aku, a demon-like spirit. Through this twist of fate they became unwilling travel companions, leaving the future of Inao and its inhabitants in the hands of an apprentice Priestess and a saucy demon.
In this poetic universe, laced with humour and inspired by Japanese myths, discover the truth about the events that are disturbing the balance between the worlds of the living and the spirits by exploring the two facets of the island, and try to restore peace on Inao.
The day-night cycle
On the island of Inao, just like in real life, it can be night or day, both « worlds » being closely linked to each other. The game possesses an automatic cycle which has a significant impact on your surroundings outdoors. However, later in the game, you will gain the ability to switch freely between night and day and in the blink of an eye, thanks to a mysterious artefact (and this even indoors!).
This divine power will offer you two different points of view on the world in perpetual motion around you, as some enemies or elements of the decor react differently by day and by night, and you will have to use this power with ingenuity if you do not want to miss anything.
One can tell Lynn is a energetic young woman! Aside from running and classic jumps, Lynn can perform double jumps to reach higher places, or bounce on certain enemies, objects or plants by jumping on them, which may lead to platform phases only based on rebounds. She can also glide, crouch, walk discreetly, slide, do wall jumps and many other things.
Aku accompanies Lynn throughout the whole adventure, sometimes as a guide, and sometimes as a sarcastic commentator.
It is important to keep in mind that in Lynn and the Spirits of Inao, the aim is not to kill your enemies, but to help these tormented spirits trapped in a frenzy beyond their control, and to appease them so they may reach to the other side.
During your adventure, you will have to face a wide range of enemies with various styles. You will be able to appease some by jumping on them, and later, by striking them with your powerful spectral blade or by throwing bombs at them. However, some enemies will require particular methods and it will be your task to discover which ones at your own risk! You might even be left with no other choice than to avoid some of them…
As in any respectable, good platformer, you will sometimes have to face ferocious bosses during epic battles. But each boss is different, and you will have to devise specific strategies depending on your adversary’s weaknesses and on the items you will have in your possession by that stage of the adventure.
Collecting lost souls
If some spirits have succumbed to rage and become aggressive, others are simply lost souls you must gather along your quest.
This is a side objective and you will be able to finish levels, or even the entire game, without having collected all of the souls (after all, they do not represent any immediate danger to the inhabitants of the island). However, if you wish to reach the famous 100% completion rate, you cannot leave anyone behind.
[Tip: Do not hesitate to switch regularly between night and day to be sure not to forget a hidden soul.]
The mysterious island
Discover the island of Inao, as vast as it is beautiful, with its many landscapes which all display a “hand drawn” style as well as an abundancy of details, but each possess a different theme and its own spirits.
Every background is like a “living picture” with its elements being in perpetual motion, and this, by day as well as by night. You will get the chance to quench your thirst for exploration in those backgrounds inspired by Asia through the open-world system. At times, you may even have to retrace your steps in order to unblock new zones you could not access until then, by using newly acquired items. The world of Lynn is also filled with hidden places and treasures, such as caves, cellars or sanctuaries, which the most passionate explorers will look forward to discovering.
As any other island, Inao also has a climate. Indeed, an automatic and random meteorological system is included in the game, which will make your gaming experience even more immersive!
The climate will not directly modify the characteristics of the elements in the game, but it will for example affect your perception, or introduce new factors you will have to take into account during your progression (fog, lightning...). Will you be able to face the raging elements of nature while fighting angry spirits at the same time?
The two faces of the village
In the centre of the island of Inao is the village, the intersection of the paths leading to the different zones of the island, but also a place for relaxation.
Do not be fooled by appearances, the village of Inao is not as ordinary as it may seem. When the sun sets, the living give way to the spirits and a whole new facet of the village appears.
A host of colourful characters
In the village of the living as well as in that of the spirits, meet a wide range of colourful characters filled with humour!
Learn more about Lynn's universe, but also collect clues about the cause of the recent troubles and maybe tumble onto side quests with enticing rewards. Be ready to be surprised!
The night festival
At any given time, you will have the possibility to go to the night festival from the village in order to unwind and have some fun.
There, you will find shops and many games stalls, ranging from action to reflection. Of course, winning these mini-games will not affect the main plot of the game, but the rewards will be worth the effort!
Side quests and treasure hunts
For the most passionate gamers, we prepared a large choice of side quests with unique scenarios and rewards which will enable you to discover other sides to the characters, to enjoy new adventures, to explore exclusive zones, to further immerse yourself in the universe, and of course, to reach the 100% completion rate of the game
In addition to these quests, you will also be able to go treasure hunting! As the name suggests, get your hands on maps (left by enemies, found in chests, won at mini-games) and follow them to a precise location on the island to find a treasure. However, not all treasures on the island have a map, and you will have to find some by your own means. Enough to awaken the pirate within you!
The universe of Lynn and the Spirits of Inao is a combination of colours and harmonies evocative of poetry and travels. You will find in the soundtrack melodies of Asian influence which will match the rhythm of the game at all times.
Each zone has its own musical themes and for a better immersion, ambient sounds and sound effects will be created and recorded specifically for the game.

Developing a game is no easy task, it takes money and time. Up until now, we have been able to work on Lynn by having day jobs and working on the game in the evenings and the weekends. However if we want Lynn to become the great adventure game we dream of, we need to be able to work full time on the development (without risking to starve to death) and to hire new people.
With your support, we will be able to:
- Enhance the gameplay and continue creating gorgeous looking graphics and beings full of life
- Pay Nicolas to get beautiful in game musics that will take you to the enchanting world of Lynn
- Hire a new full time programmer, as the one we had until now unfortunately had to leave us, precisely because we could no longer remunerate him
- Cover our (small) living costs: the rent and a lot of caffeine!
- Cover the business costs: furniture and applications
If we receive more support than our initial goal, we will be able to implement all of the great ideas we had to put aside for lack of resources! The first stretch goals are thus essentially oriented towards adding contents such as new zones, secret places, quests and bosses or more animation. But the goals also include releases on other platforms such as PS4, Wii U and Xbox One as well as translations in other languages, to allow you to enjoy the ultimate gaming experience regardless of your preferred console or of your language!
But all this is only possible with your support. During the Steam Greenlight campaign, the Steam gamer community decided to believe in Lynn and greenlit our game in only thirteen days, proving to us that we could trust you, the gamers. We hope that this time again, you will join us on the Lynn adventure and that you will allow us to create the game YOU want to play.
Risks and challenges
In video game design just as in any project, unexpected events can always happen which might prolong the production time. A programming mistake, a member who had to leave, or a zombie apocalypse, who knows? But what we can promise you is that we have done everything in our power to be ready in any situation: We have established an honest development agenda with enough leeway, we have an automatic and regular backup system on a private server so we do not lose any data, the majority of the decors are ready to be integrated and the main part of the work on the core-gameplay has been done, we have talented and competent team members who put all their energy and their creativity in the creation of Lynn and we know we can count on you. All we have left to do is get the anti-zombie machetes ready.
The unprecedented gameplay of Lynn, at the crossways between Asian-style animation movies (especially Ghibli) and platformer has yet to win its spurs and in that, constitutes a risk, but we believe in our creation. The difficulties we have been through up until now showed our determination and gave us the confidence that we can face any hardship thrown our way to create a game combining quality and punctuality. You too, stay with us, and we promise we will offer you a magical and beautiful game.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
