The state of Salmon and Steelhead is in turmoil; a sign of the times. Natural resources pushed to the brink with local communities struggling to find common ground on the future of the river ecosystems.
"Our Two Hands" is an investigation into our society's complex and intimate relationship with fly fishing for Salmonids. How did we arrive at this crossroads of conservation and sportsmanship and what are the creative alternatives to the currently flawed management practices for Salmon and Steelhead?
Those in pursuit of ensuring the health of these fish and their environment seek sustainable conditions for the species as well as the preservation of this creative, innovative and affecting tradition. The community of swung fly steelhead fishermen and women is cut from a cloth of passion for the protection and the quest towards wild places and wild fish.
Natural Commodities - The modern model of technology in the place of nature has plagued the management of wild Salmonids and paved the way for the last 150 years of population supplementation, waterway obstruction and over harvest. How have we homogenized, blocked and eradicated wild fish populations from coast to coast in the United States and at what cost? What are the creative options we can/are employing to ensure healthy returns while continuing to provide enjoyable and "productive" sportsmanship?
Follow the Money - Join us as we follow the money through the science, the jobs, the politics and the agencies. How much do hatchery programs cost, and what are their impacts both economically and environmentally? The mythology of a future for wild fish and the health of the fisheries based upon complex modern technology and economics has come to a head.
People and Opinions - As wild steelhead and salmon populations dwindle the angling community grows by the day. How do we balance our fishing ethics in regards to policy and management with the ever-changing status of wild steelhead and salmon? Finding middle ground for such a passionate following may seem daunting, but it is our collective responsibility to find a common theme as river stewards that prolongs the future of wild fish and the tradition of the swung fly.
WHO WE ARE
We are Steelhead fishermen. We are fly fishing guides, filmmakers and conservationists. We want to craft a film that brings awareness to the "sport", the community of guides, fly shops, non-profits, companies and recreational fisher people that care about WILD STEELHEAD. We want to bring the conflict within the fishing world and the surrounding fishery management to light. We want to open new eyes to two-handed casting and fishing a swung fly, and why we do it. We love Salmon and Steelhead and the culture that fly fishing for them has spawned. We want to see it continue and progress, but not at the sake of the health and sustainability of wild fish. Help us make a film that brings these issues to light and creates a forum for conversation about new age conservation efforts and sustainable fishing culture.
We have compiled footage since October 2013 and are presently continuing work on the film. We have some great sponsors signed onto the project, but we still need more funds for continued in-depth research, travel expenses, rental equipment, post production costs and distribution.
We will continue our interviews, research and immersion into the community of fly fishing guides, spey casting enthusiasts, recreational fishermen/women, families, fly tiers, authors, non-profits, and scientists that are fighting for the conservation of wild fish, while still channeling their passion of swinging flies for Steelhead and Salmon.
We have several production trips planned starting in August 2014 and continuing through the winter of 2015. We would like to raise enough money to open more doors and delve deeper into the story and the issues in tow.
Our passion for this topic drives our adventure into crafting this film. We can't imagine a place without wild fish and the culture that has been cultivated. Help us continue through this next phase of the project and provide you with a great film that raises awareness of the issues, makes you want to go fishing and influences change.
EXCEEDING OUR GOAL
In reality this film is going to take much more than $20,000 to finish filming, edit, color, insure, promote, distribute, etcetera. If we exceed our goal, all of the money will be channeled into making the film the very best it can be.
We want to hit our goal and guarantee the money that our supporters have so graciously contributed. After we hit the $20,000 mark, lets keep the ball rolling and bring the new goal to $30,000 and beyond!
We would love to see our $20,000 Kickstarter goal left in the dust and have our new budget open up even more doors in this films progression.

Risks and challenges
First of all, we want to be as transparent about this process as possible.
Due to sparse and variable runs of fish and the tumultuous conditions of the rivers in which these fish reside, our encounters with the finned kind are generally few and far between. We experienced this on our first trip to Oregon in February 2014: 10 days, 4 professional guides, 2 hooked fish, 2 lost fish, 1 bent hook, 5000 CFS flow variations, inclement weather, etc. Our goal is to raise enough funds to buffer these "out of our hands" variables that could potentially impede the collection of needed shots.
Second, costs of distribution, E&O Insurance, and getting the film into cinemas and film festivals can cost a small fortune. We will use the funds raised through Kickstarter for distributorship to get the film into theaters and into the fans hands. Once the film is funded through Kickstarter we will send updates to backers to demonstrate how well the film is progressing.
We have personally invested time, money, and countless hours of networking and research to create this film. We look forward to the process and challenges ahead.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
