"BLEU(e)" is a free adaptation of "Blue is the Warmest Colour". The play is directed by Elisabeth Ligonnet Lam, with an artistic direction by Léo Landon Barret, and a set design by Marie Hollanders

Developed in December 2017 by Niamh Copple at the Tisch School of the Arts, and performed at Playwrights Horizons Downtown in New York, we are now continuing this journey to its home country, France.

"I am a woman, I tell my story." As theatre artists, we believe that right now is the time for women's stories to be told. We are living in a time where the ownership over women's bodies and their stories is changing. The beauty and poignancy of Abdellatif Kechiche's film is undeniable, but so are the problematic aspects of his film making. This production, as in its first draft, will re-visit Onna and Barbara's romance, removing the male gaze from the story telling. "BLEU(e)" will be a play by women, for women, about women.

We are committed to diversity within our cast and creative team, and to bring new perspectives forward as we grapple with how intimacy should be depicted. We want to make the women the subject of this artwork, and not the object.

We are reaching out to you because we would love you to be a part of it. We will be in residency at the Fontaine aux Images, which welcomes artists all across France. The money you decide to put into this project will mainly go to fund our residency there. It will finance :

  •  the space we will be performing in (electricity, water, heat, sound & lighting design)
  •  the rest of the production's budget (costumes, set pieces, promotion)

We are grateful for you help. Every bit counts. We love you!

First production of BLEU(e), december 2017
First production of BLEU(e), december 2017

Risks and challenges

Our main challenge will be budgeting, in order to pay for our residency at the Fontaine aux Images and to fund production expenses.
