What would you do if you were a super-hero with God-like powers and had only 6 weeks to live?
Hey Guys. Sorry but I guess asking for $8,000 was just too much. I've been marketing this kickstarter like a full time job but just haven't gotten the response needed.
I"m going to be getting financing from some other sources and will be selling some things of mine to help pay for production on this comic. I just launched a new kick starter with a much more realistic goal of $4,000. Please continue to support this comic and back the new kickstarter. The more early supporters I get the higher the chances are that kick starter will spotlight the series. Thank you all again and I'm sorry for the headache.
Here's a really cool trailer made by a fan. Just in case the above video of the homeless looking fellow (ME) talking about the project gets boring.
Before reading the synopsis I just wanted to let you know that you can download a free PDF of the first 14 pages here
Patriot is a 4 issue mini-series that is unlike anything you've ever read. It tells the personal and emotional story of a super-hero that attempts to tie up all of his lose ends before a brain tumor takes his life. These include his obligations to protecting the world as well as those he has with his family.
"The quality of stories being put out by Bleeding Ink is tremendous". -Stash my comics.com
After finding out about his disease and much thought, Patriot comes to the conclusion that drastic action must be taken before he dies. For years he has battled super-villains that no other hero can stop and no prison can hold. While Patriot has never killed or inflicted unjust harm he comes to the conclusion that the only solution is to kill those that could take over the world when he is gone.
"The characters are well fleshed out and you feel genuine emotion for them. Their motivations are clear and well thought out. The story is paced nicely and moves along well. With just this one issue of story, I know that I’m hooked, and it usually takes a couple of issues to get me sold on a series. You can feel the anguish written into the Patriot, and also see the dark wisdom in his decision to take the course he’s chosen."- Comic Conundrum's review of Patriot
Patriot has to explain this decision to his son as well as his teammates. His son tries to talk him out of it while other heroes try and stop Patriot by force. Patriot must now go against everything he believes, battle his friends and deal with the shame given to him by his son to do what he believes is the greater good.
"Grillo’s turn on the writing is inspired. He really digs deep into the main character and gives us well-structured compelling dialogue. The supporting cast of characters is just as well-versed and help to propel the story as an ensemble piece."- ExpertComics.com's review of Patriot
WHY KICK STARTER?!
Patriot is a 4 issue comic book miniseries that was written by me, Jesse Grillo.Jeff Slemons penciled and inked. Jeff agreed to work on the project for a much lower rate than he usually charges and we got through the first issue and a half before I lost my job. I work as an assistant usually so I don't make a lot of money but whatever I do make, I pour into making comic books. It's my passion and what I live for. Unfortunately, because I've been unemployed I haven't been able to pay Jeff for the last 2 issues so we've had to put the project on hold. As of right now all we have is 1 and a half issue penciled and inked. The first issue is completed, including coloring.
And this is why I need Kick Starter's to help finish this beautiful mini-series.
"Patriot is one of the coolest comics I have read all year. It's full of pathos, moral ambiguity and kick ass action. This deserves to be on stands more than half the mass produced comics out there." --Daniel Gonzales, Editor of Surreal Grotesque Magazine
I know. Believe me, I hate asking. Despite my team agreeing to do this project for a lower rate it still costs a lot to produce a comic of this quality. This money is going to be used to produce over 60 pages and 5 wrap around covers. The $8,000 will be used to pay the artists and doesn't even cover the printing costs. Those costs will be taken out of my savings. Of course it would be nice to have a kick starter where the goal is much higher but because I don't have a large fan base I need to be realistic. My hope is that we make our goal and beyond to help cover some of the additional expenses.
"Jesse Grillo is one of the undiscovered gems of the independent comic industry. Over at Bleeding Ink Comics, he’s making some of the best independent comics that I’ve seen. He’s writing and creating wonderful things that need to be in comic shops everywhere." - Comic Conundrum's review of Patriot
I’ve tried to include as many cool rewards as possible. Many of these rewards involve other comics I've made. You can read pages from these comics (including Patriot) here www.facebook.com/BleedingInkComics
"The artwork is wonderful. It’s just fantastic. The character expressions and facial detail stand out, especially. You can see the weariness on the Patriot’s face; you can see what the weight of his burden and the news he’s received has done to him. You can see the power in the Patriot’s body and the strength of this man. Overall, the art meshes well with the story, helping bring the whole work together in a nice way." - Comic Conundrum's review of Patriot
If we make the $8,000 I'll be able to produce the mini-series and that would be amazing. I'm offering an additional reward to help promote this project in hopes that we pass our goal. If we make it to $11,000 I'll be able to pay for the comic to be colored as well. If that happens you'll have the choice of receiving the comic in black & white or color, free of charge. (I'll pay for the extra costs to print it in color.)
In addition, I will send out a PDF of Blood-Moon #1 to everyone that backs the project. Yes, even if you only back Patriot for $1. Blood Moon is a horror comic that is currently being worked on and the first issue will be done in about 5 weeks. Click on this link to see some of the art work. By the way, the artist is doing the comic for back end because he loves the story and believes in it. Just don't want you to think I'm doing this Kick Starter just because I want to raise money. I am legitimacy broke
"There’s no single theme in the World of Bleeding Ink but rather a hard-edged world view of a reality not dissimilar from ours that just happens to be populated by Super powered teens, killer robots or Superheroes. It’s our world but just that little bit stranger & just that little bit darker." - webstoodstupid.com
This is the image that's on the back of the War Zone t-shirt. It's a large piece and takes up most of the back. On the front is a large Bleeding Ink Comics Logo. It's a long sleeve, black american apparel shirt.
"After reading some of his work for the first time I came away a little disturbed and a bit shocked." - StashMyComics.com
This is the image that's on the back of the Chapel sweatshirt. It's a large image that takes up most of the back. On the front right pocket is a Bleeding Ink Comics logo. It's a black, zip up american apparel sweatshirt.
I will cover the cost for shipping but please add at least $5 for international orders. If you REALLY can't afford $5 or more then don't worry about it. I'll cover the cost. It's an honor to have new fans reading my work.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read all of this.
