Back in December I went on a 2 month road trip and wrote a book on my journey. The first draft is complete and and I would like to go on a second road trip to finish the second draft and to really get into the mind set of the main character of the story. The forest in the above picture is where I lived for part of the trip.
"The gritty tormented spin in the worlds that Grillo creates is unmistakably his. After reading some of his work for the first time I came away a little disturbed and a bit shocked." - StashMyComics.com
The story is about Joshua Blackwood, a guy that finds out he has schizophrenia so he goes on a road trip to find himself before his condition starts to take away the person he is. As the book progresses the writing style changes as his condition becomes worse.
You can view sections of the book under updates. And here is a link to an interview I did for the book. http://selfpublishingteam.com/q-a-with-jesse-grillo-diving-into-the-details/
This is a band I stayed with for a few days in Humbolt California.
There are going be daily updates on this kickstarter and on my facebook about where I am, snip-its from what I am writing and photos from my adventures. I’m a very method writer so these updates would be really interesting. On my trip for the first draft I lived in a forest in Humbolt, California for 4 days, I dressed and pretended I was homeless in Eugene, Oregon for 2 days, I worked on a hippie commune, volunteered at a homeless shelter, interviewed over 20 people, got kicked out of Canada and stayed in a haunted house in Seattle.
For the second draft I would be doing a lot of the same things. I am for sure going to be homeless again for a few days and plan on doing volunteer work along the way. I’ll start clean shaven and will just be bringing the bare necessities. A few pairs of clothing, my laptop, books that relate to what I’m writing and a few notebooks. I don’t want to bring any distractions with me and will be bringing only things that pertain to the story and that the main character of my book would bring. The adventure is going to start in Los Angeles and will end in Portland, Oregon.
"The quality of stories being put out by Jesse Grillo is tremendous." -Stash my comics
This is how my room has looked for the past few months.
Every cent of what I will make through kickstarter will go into the making of the book. It will cover the costs of my editor, Desktop Publisher and printing costs. The writing style changes as the book progresses and images, clips of papers, ripped out passages from books, photographs and other items are included as Joshua's schizophrenia becomes worse. I'm going to be working a lot with my editor and desktop publisher when I get back and it's going to cost me. Anything I make on top of those costs will go toward helping cover the cost for the trip such as gas and any research costs.
A recent review for one of my comics-
It's so perfectly written, I truly felt for the characters. The suffering they go through after their service to the armed forces, I know that a lot of people will relate to this kind of pain. Honestly I think that Jesse Grillo has written a brilliantly crafted story,- http://jaybwebb.wordpress.com/
Here's me near the end of the trip treating myself.
