Hello there! Blaze Type is back! 🔥
It's been over a year since we launched our first kickstarter campaign and now we are back to tell you guys this story in the form of a specimen-booklet-comics like book.
I'm Matthieu Salvaggio, founder of Blaze Type, a french type design foundry based in Lyon, France. Last year I launched a kickstarter campaign about the release of a typeface family, the Osmose, and its newspaper-specimen.
We're very close to the first year anniversary of the foundry's release (the 8th of November) and we decided to join the Bold Type campaign by designing a very special kind of type-design specimen: it's not a specimen, it's not a book, it's not a comics (no it's not superman) but it's all three of those at the same time.
(These are but sneak pics, the specimen is a WIP and will be completely finished by January, we would keep you guys updated with ongoing screens ofc 👍)
So that's about it really: it's a 24 pages specimen printed in France on Symbol Freelife E/E 49 Country 170 g/m2 paper. It's in limited edition (100) and it's cool as 🔥 The design will be handled by intercouleur, a graphic design bureau based between Paris and Lyon whom we work with (crazy folks these guys)
To make this happen we're asking you to believe in our project and to participate in whatever way you see fit. You can participate by purchasing one of the rewards listed on the right side of the page or by sharing the project around you. As you can see, the "main course" is the specimen itself, but there are also some of the type families we distribute.
To help make this project come true, you can get one of the three of our best selling fonts at a very interesting rate + the specimen itself, Apoc, Surt or Oroban:
View Apoc full specimen
View Surt full specimen
View Oroban full specimen
Oh wait! There's also awesome totebags to get your hands on:
Here are the details:38x42cm
280g Bio coton, crafted and printed in France, designed in Apoc, printed in Pantone Warm Red C
Anything counts so if you want this project to be a success don't forget to share it amongst your friends and family!
(Important to note that our Font Licences is a ALL IN ONE package which contains the rights to use the fonts for: Print, Web, App, Epub, Broadcasting—a full package with no additional costs for any amount of websites, apps, broadcasting, videos or digital publishing), you will get your fonts in .OTF, .EOT, .WOFF and .WOFF2
There are no monthly fees. Our licence lasts forever. No bandwidth restrictions, no limitation whatsoever to the amount of visitors per month/year. You basically get the full access to the font for whatever uses you wish, forever. Even though typefaces are softwares we think of them more as tools.
"If I had to buy a hammer, I think I should be allowed to use it as much as I want, wouldn't you agree?" (We already said that in our first campaign but really that's kind of our motto)
So what does this project need?
To make this a success, we need :
2000 € for the printing of the type specimen (24 pages, offset printed on Symbol Freelife E/E 49 Country 170 g/m2 paper)
375 € for shipping
125 € Kickstarter Fees
All of the money will be invested in this project.
That's what we did on our first campaign and that is what is going to happen here also. We want to work with the kickstarter community to release awesome things.
If we go beyond our main goal, we'll keep spending it on you guys by choosing expanding the reward lists for the contributors with silkscreen posters, riso printed cards, teesh, caps & hats, etc. There are many ways to improve the edition and to design other cool things: silkscreen posters, clothes, etc.
We're open to suggestions about that, if you have cool ideas on how we should spend the money (should we go beyond the main goal) hit us with an email firstname.lastname@example.org
Blaze Type was released with the help of the Kickstarter community, after almost a year of existence (and over a year since our first campaign), the Bold Type event is our occasion to give back to this community which helped us get on the type design stage. Join us in this journey 👊
About Blaze Type:
Blaze Type is an independent type design foundry based in Lyon, France, funded in 2016 by Matthieu Salvaggio.
Our aim is to design, produce and distribute beautiful typefaces which will age gracefully and provide incredible functionality over their years of use in what we think is the most fair way possible for each parties.
We dedicate our time to the design of innovative retail typefaces for our own Type Catalogue and to the design of custom typefaces for diverse clients. We don’t distribute our fonts anywhere else but here. We consider typefaces not only as softwares but also as tools. Therefore, we produce complex font-family with a wide set of glyphs and alternates. Our tools should be used in a fair and flexible way without limitation, as such we offer a very flexible desktop/web licensing which allow our clients to benefit fully from our products on any amount of projects they want: whether they be printed, digital or broadcasting.
If you had to buy a hammer, you should be allowed to use it as much as you want, on whatever you want, wouldn’t you agree? Buying a typeface should be easy. As such, each of our fonts will always cost the same price. We want you to be able to choose exactly which product you want. You can select multiple fonts of your liking and you will be granted a very interesting discount when you desire to work with more than one of our products (the more you get, the bigger the discount).
In this digital era where distributing a software is as simple as copying it from one workstation to the other we believe reimplementing the idea of a Typeface as a sort of “hardware” is a way of questioning the whole idea of digital distribution and adding another layer of beauty and uniqueness to a font design.
Risks and challenges
The main challenge of this campaign is to promote and release the very first edition of a long series of Blaze Type specimens. This is but the first of a long series of booklets-comics-specimen-like we will launch every year.
There is still our wish to promote typeface design, going through Kickstarter is yet another way for us to promote this design field we love so much!
As we said in our previous campaign: "Somehow, it seems typeface design is still not something so commonly known. It feels strange that it is not such a 'big deal' amongst most people. Still, it is a part of everyone's life and daily schedule: we spend our time reading informations wether it be on subways stations, posters, phones, computer screens, whatever.
Typefaces don't just magically appear on our phones or computers or in the streets, you have to design them somehow—would be cool if everyone knew and appreciated that."
