WE CREATED A FILM USING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND TURNED IT INTO A MOVEMENT THAT WILL INSPIRE YOUTH AROUND THE WORLD!
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.“
Bilal's Stand was created by high school and college students in the city of Detroit. Taking four years and several maxed-out credit cards to complete, it debuted at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and won the Crystal Heart Award at Heartland.
Now it is being turned into a movement, the TAKE A STAND campaign, aimed to inspire and empower youth across America. We are hustling to get it out to 1000 schools this winter starting MLK Jr. Day (Jan. 17, 2011) - that's a reach of 1,000,000 students! This is a first in film, and we're super excited about the potential! But to get there, we need support to put the finishing touches on the movie and movement.
SYNOPSIS OF THE FILM: Based on a true story, Bilal is a Muslim high school senior in Detroit, who works long hours to keep up both his grades and his family’s long-owned taxi stand. “The Stand” has been the family’s social and financial hub for sixty years, and now Bilal is destined to carry the torch. Despite a series of setbacks at home, Bilal secretly submits a college application and takes up ice carving in order to win a scholarship. Now he is forced to decide whether to continue running The Stand – the only life he has ever known – or take a chance at social mobility.
OUR MISSION: Is to continue inspiring and empowering youth around the world. This film is being used as a socially conscious media outlet, to inspire positive action towards bettering our youth and the community that they live in.
GOAL: Our goal is to raise $18,000 in order to continue our national tour. The film is currently on tour, and has been screened at the University of Michigan, Princeton, Virginia Tech and dozens of other colleges. Our job is not done! We want to give every high school in the nation an opportunity to see this film. To do that, we need your help!
WHERE IS IT GOING? We will be investing in many pieces over the next 2 months as we prepare to release Bilal's Stand ourselves. These include:
*10 "Making of Bilal's Stand" webisodes drawn from 100+ hours of footage over 4+ years
*Creation of publicity materials, including posters, t-shirts, fliers and buttons
*Finishing off sound and visual elements of the film, including animations
*Hiring top-notch publicists to draw attention to the cause
*Funding of screenings at schools and organizations that lack the funds to pay for it themselves
Thank you for your support!
ps - please find us on facebook, www.facebook.com/bilalsstand, and invite your friends to it as well!
*Most gifts will be received after the film is released on Martin Luther King Jr.'s Day, January 17, 2011.
