We are Blato Zlato (“Swamp Gold” in Bulgarian), a New Orleans-based Balkan band featuring dreamy three-part vocal harmonies and hard-hitting instrumentals. We perform folk and composed music from the Balkans and Eastern Europe with a particular focus on Bulgarian songs and dark, improvisational arrangements.
Since the 2017 release of our debut album Swamp Gold and subsequent vinyl EP Voyage, we have broadened our fan base from bars and clubs to museums, universities, and the local festival circuit, and brought our music 'across the pond,' back to the lands from which these folk songs hail. We have been hard at work writing new music and new arrangements, traveling, and performing this music that makes us who we are. In the past 2 years, we've played shows in the United States, Ireland, Northern Ireland, England and Bulgaria, and have been inspired by the physical and political climates in which we've found ourselves. We have a new batch of songs inspired by our experiences, and we can't wait to share them with you.

About this album:
This sophomore album, tentatively titled "In The Wake", is a collection of mostly original songs that delve into themes of nature, water, fluidity, and the fragility of life. We've spent the last year writing and arranging these songs, and are excited to be recording with acclaimed engineers Mark Bingham (of Piety Street Recording) and Chris Bloch in Henderson, LA; and Mike Harvey (of NOLA Recording Studio) in New Orleans. We'll also be working with Dave Cook (of Area 52 Studios in Saugerties, NY), who mixed and mastered our previous releases and has a wonderful grasp on our sound.
A bit about the engineers:
“...Mark Bingham has worked with Louisiana music industry icons that include Dr. John, Little Freddie King and Dr. Michael White, as well as mainstream artists Marianne Faithfull, Allen Ginsberg, REM and Sun-Ra, to name a few. A music producer, composer, musician, and engineer, Bingham moved to New Orleans in 1982 and in 2001 opened Piety Street Recording, which was also featured in HBO’s “Treme.”" - prweb.com
"Nominated for a Grammy for his work on the Hot 8 Brass Band's 2013 release, [Mike] Harvey is an established music producer and professional musician. He is the owner of Nola Recording Studios in New Orleans, LA and leads Mike Harvey's Hot Club (recently nominated for Offbeat Magazines Best of awards), which combines elements of gypsy jazz, Brazilian jazz, New Orleans traditional jazz, bebop, classical music, and rock'n'roll. Dave Cook grew up in Brooklyn and Staten Island, NY, and now lives in Saugerties, NY, where he operates Area 52 Studios. Dave has worked with a impressive array of musical acts both in the studio and as a touring engineer, ranging from Laurie Anderson and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds to The B-52s and Buckwheat Zydeco. He mixed and mastered both of our previous releases, Swamp Gold and Voyage, and we're thrilled to get the opportunity to work with him again. - more information at area52studio.com
Here is a run down of what we are crowdfunding for:
1. Studio time
5. Paying special guest musicians to appear on the album
6. Pressing of the album (including artwork, photography, graphic design)
Because this is a Kickstarter campaign, if we don't reach our goal of $10,000 by our March 12th deadline, we will receive nothing and your pledges will be refunded. But we're confident we can reach this goal with your help, and might even be able to reach some higher goals as well.
Our Kickstarter goal of $10,000 will only barely cover the above absolutely necessary expenses. But there's more we'd love to do if we could! So we're including some stretch goals as well:
- If we make at least $12,000, we will produce, film and release a video for one song from the album. Releasing a video is actually very important for getting buzz and press around the album release, and we have some folks lined up to produce it. But we can only make it happen if we reach this stretch goal!
- If we make at least $14,000, not only will we release a video, but we will also be able to release the new album on vinyl! Unfortunately, without reaching this stretch goal, vinyl is simply too expensive.
So if you want to make either or both of these stretch goals a reality, please consider donating at a higher reward level and/or passing on this Kickstarter campaign to your friends!
