Town of Salem is a fresh innovation on the classic party games Mafia and Werewolf. It is a game of murder, accusations, deceit and mob hysteria.
Town of Salem takes place in the era of the Salem witch trials in an alternate universe version of Salem, MA.
How To Play
The game ranges from 7 to 15 players. These players are randomly divided into alignments - Town, Mafia, Serial Killers, Arsonists and Neutrals. If you are a Town member (the good guys) you must track down the Mafia and other villains before they kill you. The catch? You don't know who is a Town member and who is a villain.
If you are an evil role, such as a Serial Killer, you secretly murder town members in the veil of night and try to avoid getting caught.

Town of Salem has 29 unique roles ensuring a different experience each time you play.
Before a game starts, players are put into a lobby where the host can select what roles will be in the game. Players are then assigned roles at random from the list of chosen roles. Players have an in-game role card that explains their role's abilities and alignments. For an in-depth look at the abilities of each role please visit: www.blankmediagames.com/roles
The night phase is when most roles use their abilities. For example, Serial Killers stealthily murder people, Doctors heal people who are attacked, and Sheriffs interrogate people for suspicious activity.
The day phase allows the Town members to discuss who they suspect of being an evil role. Once the voting phase starts a majority vote from the town will put someone on trial.
The defense phase is when you plead your innocence to the town. Have a convincing story or find yourself facing the gallows!
During this phase the town will vote on the fate of the defendant. Players can vote guilty, innocent or abstain. If there are more guilty votes than innocent votes the defendant is sentenced to death by hanging!
Town of Salem is a browser game that currently uses the Facebook API to have players log in so their achievements can be saved. In the future, Facebook integration will be completely optional. You can play Town of Salem from any computer and still have all of your characters, houses, maps, items and achievements.
Players are able to choose their own map (town setting), character, items, house and a custom name. The other players in the game will see your chosen character, house and name. As the game grows we will add many more cool maps, characters and houses. There are currently, 4 maps (1 is exclusive to Kickstarter), 6 characters (1 is exclusive to Kickstarter) and 6 houses (1 is exclusive to Kickstarter) to choose from.
There are currently over 300 unique achievements in the game. Earning achievements will grant various in-game items (however the items for donation rewards are exclusive to Kickstarter).

We have gotten a lot of support and interest from the YouTube community. They are awesome so check out some footage of them playing our game. :D
We are a small team of game enthusiasts that consists of two programmers, two artists (one focusing on UI and characters, the other on backgrounds and houses) and one sound designer. We are spread across the globe but united by our passion for gaming. We want to bring the fun of playing party games like Mafia and Werewolf into a video game that can be played with friends easily online. Sometimes it isn't easy to get 15 people to meet at your house for a game!
We have spent the last year and a half creating Town of Salem out of our own pockets and unfortunately we can't finish this project without your help. We have more features in progress that we feel are core to enhancing the game play experience of Town of Salem.
These features consist of:
- Achievement Browser - View all of your cool achievements.
- Playing With Friends - Use the optional Facebook login to invite Facebook friends to play with you.
- Tutorial System - Learn the game while playing with AI.
- Pet system - Have pets follow your character.
- Particle System - Apply cool effects like a halo above your head or fiery footprints.
- Non-Facebook Login - Login without using Facebook.
- Customization - There are many more map designs, houses, characters and roles we want to add to the game!
- Localization - Support for other languages.
Town of Salem is currently in Alpha testing (click me to play), but without help and positive feedback from the Kickstarter community we will be unable to finish it and many of the features that are in progress will not be completed. We hope that you enjoy games of this genre as much as we do and that you will help us finish this project we have worked so passionately on for the last year.

Risks and challenges
Town of Salem is already in alpha testing. If we make our goal, we will finish the game. There is no risk in terms of completing the product. We have a working game but there are bugs that need to be fixed along with testing and features that need to be completed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes. This game was inspired by a SC2 mod created by DarkRevenant called Mafia. We loved the game and wanted to make our own version that wasn't held up by the limitations of being a SC mod (and essentially owned by Blizzard). By being a stand alone game we can reach a much different audience of players who do not own SC2.
A majority of our roles are based off of this mod and that mod based its roles off of EpicMafia which in turn got its inspiration by the party game Mafia which is based off of the party game Werewolf created by Dimitry Davidoff in 1986. The main credit for these fun games belongs to Dimitry and we are all putting our own twist on his creation.
Our game differs in art style, music, customization and certain roles. We have added a few of our own new roles such as the Medium and the Retributionist as well as modified how many existing roles work. For example the Doctor can heal themselves one time which was to prevent the Doctor from having to randomly heal someone on the first night who may end up being evil or he can save his self heal for when he has to announce his role and fears being targeted for death the following night. The Jailor cannot execute people on the first night and if he executes a Town member his execution privileges are taken away to disincentivize randomly executing people. The Vigilante will commit suicide if he kills a Town member to also prevent Vigilantes from randomly shooting people. These are but a few examples of how we have changed roles abilities to what we think makes the game more fun. We have also removed many roles we felt were boring and added little to the value or fun factor of the game. We will continue to create new roles and features to further evolve this game as our own entity. It is only the Alpha right now and many features we want are still missing.
We want to thank DarkRevenant for creating such an awesome game and we simply want to bring the fun of Mafia to a different player base who would never get to see it unless they paid $50 for SC2.
