The Arena Mode Saga continues with ‘Assault or Attrition’: a fast-paced, sci-fi/fantasy novel written by me, Blake Northcott. It’s filled with action, adventure, superhumans, explosions, four-letter words, and, this time around, a few juicy mysteries.
Even if you just finished watching my Oscar-caliber video, there’s a good chance you have a few questions...
YOUR TOP 5 QUESTIONS ABOUT ME, THIS BOOK, AND WHY IT’S AWESOME
1) This is what, a book with pictures and stuff?
Yup. Read the novel - and if the mood strikes, flip to the back and see character illustrations by Marvel, DC and Image Comics artists (and one from Adventure Time)!
Been wasting your time reading those regular old novels that have nothing but words? Those days are over, my friend.
2) So it has superheroes, sci-fi and all that junk - what else can you tell me about it?
Read the synopsis below, and check out a short sample chapter here.
Synopsis: Thanks to an inoperable tumor pressing against his brain, Matthew Moxon was left with few options for survival. In 2041 his only chance was a multi-million dollar nanotech procedure – a price tag far out of reach until he entered ‘Arena Mode’: a no-holds-barred fighting tournament reserved for super-powered beings, where the winner would become one of the wealthiest people on the planet.
Moxon escaped the grueling event with his life, as well as the grand prize...but en route to crossing the proverbial finish line he was forced to kill Sergei Taktarov: a superhuman with a legion of followers who considered him the Second Coming.
In the aftermath of Arena Mode, Moxon retreats to Northern Canada in search of solace, unaware that he’ll soon be hunted by religious extremists, bounty hunters, and entire governments – all in search of the one known as 'The God Slayer'.
3) All right, that sounds pretty cool...but what if I didn't read the first book?
If you haven’t read the original Arena Mode (the book that precedes ‘Assault or Attrition’) no worries, mate – it’s not necessary. Each book in this series stands alone, with a distinct beginning, middle and end.
But, if you want to read the original, you can get it bundled into one of the Rewards (Ebook or physical copies). Either way, I've got you covered!
4) Who are all these Marvel, DC and Image artists – and can you show me some pictures of their work?
As luck would have it, I have not only a list of every contributor, but a bunch of bad-ass samples as well. Scroll down, dude!
- Natasha Allegri (Adventure Time, Bee and PuppyCat)
- Dave Johnson (Superman: Red Son, Deadpool, Punisher, 100 Bullets)
- Derek Laufman (World of Warcraft: Pearl of Pandaria, Marvel vs. Capcom)
- Mark McKenna (Star Wars: Old Republic, Justice League, Combat Jacks)
- Steve McNiven (Guardians of the Galaxy, Civil War, Uncanny Avengers)
- Dan Panosian (Spawn, X-Men, John Tiffany)
- John ‘Roc’ Upchurch (Rat Queens, Vescell)
My previous novels include Kindle best-sellers ‘Vs. Reality’ (2011) and the sequel ‘Relapse’ (2012), which were both ranked #1 on Amazon USA and UK for Science-Fiction/Superheroes. And my recent book ‘Arena Mode’ (2013) is the most-backed Kickstarter project in the Publishing-Fiction category this year (as of October 10).
I’ve received praise and positive reviews from comic book industry heavyweights, including Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Wanted, Jupiter’s Legacy), Mark McKenna (Star Wars, Justice League), Dave Johnson (Superman: Red Son, Deadpool), Billy Tucci (Shi) and Regina Carpinelli (CEO/Founder for Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo).
I’ve also been quoted by CNN, Image Comics, Marvel’s Icon imprint (on Kick-Ass 3, issue #2) and was recently retweeted by Warner Bros. Pictures Canada.
"I'm confused...can you show me the rewards in a graphic format with images and cool fonts?"
Yes. Yes I can. Take a look below and see which reward package works for you - and remember that no matter which pack you choose, your name will be included in the back of the book as a 'Heroic Contributor'.
“Tell me about the stretch goals!”
If you don’t know how the stretch goals work, it’s pretty simple: Pledge $30 or more (or $25 if you’re quick and get in on the Early Bird Pack) and you’ll receive all sorts of free bonus stuff!
The more people pledge, the more rewards you receive. Scroll to the top of this page to see which rewards you’ll be getting, and what’s coming up for future goals!
During my previous Kickstarter campaign, some rewards included stickers, limited-edition art card/prints, an audiobook, a world map at the front of the book, and more. I was also able to add even more Marvel, DC and Image Comics artists to the already impressive team. This time I’ll be packing in more rewards than ever!
Backing this project will not only make you happier, healthier, and more attractive to the opposite sex, but it will give you seven years of good luck. So if you've broken a mirror or walked under a ladder recently, you’re in luck – all of that negativity will instantly be reversed!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read all of this nonsense, and if you're on the fence about backing this project, please check out the sample chapter and see if ASSAULT or ATTRITION is for you. :)

Risks and challenges
This is my second Kickstarter, so I know what to expect.
This summer I delivered my first Kickstarter book – ARENA MODE – on time, as promised. The novel was completed in June of 2013 as per my original estimate, and the digital copies were sent out immediately. The physical books were in the mail at the end of June/beginning of July.
For this shipment, I will be using more durable, thicker-stock packaging to ensure the safe delivery of all books, both domestically and internationally. I will also be hiring additional people: editors, beta readers and a packaging assistant. I want to ensure the process goes even smoother, and the goods are delivered quicker and more efficiently than last time.
I believe that I delivered a quality product on-time the first time around, and the feedback I received from backers was overwhelmingly positive – this time, I promise to do the same, and improve the experience at every possible turn.
There was an additional, added bonus in my previous Kickstarter campaign for 'Arena Mode' - a tabletop RPG (role playing game). As I informed my backers, this was not to be included with the physically shipped goods on the estimated delivery date as additional production time was required to complete it. The RPG is to be delivered as a digital PDF at a later date upon completion.
While coordinating a project with over 20 collaborators - including artists, editors and other talented people - delays are sometimes a possibility, and the ongoing RPG project is an example of one of these issues.
This time around, I will work even harder to manage the multiple moving parts of this project, and ensure its delivered on-time, and with the quality you’ve come to expect.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
