This book is dedicated to the planet Earth. You have always provided for us so well. It is time for us to return the favor.

The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course focuses on the science concepts needed to understand why the climate is changing at this time, how humans are responsible, and what can be done to slow or stop the global warming that is causing climate change. This book will help you teach the facts about climate change and global warming,  two science topics that have become too politicized to be taught in many schools. I worked with kids, parents, and educators to make the material in this course engaging and easy to understand.

This is an important topic to learn and understand. To help with this, I have worked to make this the best course possible. To publish this course though, I need your help!

This is my first Kickstarter campaign, but it’s not my first science course.

Science is most effectively learned when there is a careful pairing of information with an application of that information. For that reason, this illustrated course has sixteen activities woven through it. This course is intended for use with grades ranging from late grade school to early high school. However, as one 12-year-old reviewer said, “There really is no upper age limit, if you do not know this material.”

The course thoroughly covers fundamental topics needed to understand the science of climate change. Some of these topics you might not have considered before now. For example, greenhouse gas molecules are in the air at a low concentration, but does that mean that there aren’t very many of them? It all depends how many gas molecules are in a volume of air. It turns out there are so many molecules in a small volume of air that even a low concentration of greenhouse gas molecules is a huge number.

Using illustrations, text, and activities, the course materials build the case, one scientific fact at a time, explaining how global warming is happening, why that warming is causing climate change, and what people can do to help slow and stop it.

The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course is geared toward a range of age levels. To make sure that the materials are accessible for all students in that age range this graphing activity has two versions. One set of graphs is a dot-to-dot activity for younger learners, where much of the graphing work has been done, and the real work is answering the questions at the end of the activity. There is also a version for older learners who use the information from a data table and to plot data points on the graphs.

The activities include hands-on labs, coloring, graphing, scientific modeling, and even a field trip. This coloring activity looks at the difference between the amounts of products that can be made from non-recycled materials versus recycled materials using the same amount of energy. Recycling is one of the simple steps people can take to shrink their carbon footprint.

Reviews

Reviews from Educators

The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course is a fun and engaging book for kids who want to understand what climate change is all about. It presents solid science in an accessible and tangible way that helps kids understand a complex issue. The activities are fun for kids who are just starting to understand and kids who need deeper exploration. With good science, an engaging format, and activities to make abstract concepts tangible, The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course is a great book for schools, homeschoolers, and after-school activities. Alexandria Sommers, Environmental Chemist and Science Educator

A great introduction to an important but complicated topic! Blair Lee's clear instruction and simple, hands-on activities make this a great--and necessary--book for kids and adults alike! Valerie Grosso, Be Naturally Curious

I highly recommend this publication for everyone. The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course is in a useful and easily understood format. The information is presented in such a way that it will work well with younger and older students. This is such a relevant topic in today's society, we have decided that if this project funds we will use this course in our summer co-op. It is imperative that children have the tools that they need to develop a better understanding of the world in which they live. Tina Harden, Bringing Food Forests to NE Florida

As a publisher of science curricula, I am both thrilled and honored to support The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course. This is a much needed resource for today’s environmental challenges that will surely impact the future of the very audience for whom this book is intended. What’s unique about The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course is its ability to grab children’s attention while teaching the real science behind the Change. This book isn’t a gloss over of some environmentalist’s idealistic Utopia. No, it’s a nitty-gritty, get-down-to-it climate change manual that is as practical as it is entertaining. The science taught in this book is immediately understandable and directly applicable for children (and their parents) living at this pivotal time in the world’s environment. Kate Johnson, Pandia Press

Reviews from Kids

I would highly recommend this book to inform and educate everyone on the science of climate change, which in turn allows you to make informed decisions on how to help protect our Earth's future. In this book, you will learn the truth about climate change through fun activities and accurate science then make a plan for how you can help. L.C. age 12

I liked how easy it was to understand the science explaining global warming and climate change after using The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course. I could explain what I learned to anyone! O.K. age 13

Reviews from Parents

This course is a beautiful balance of the science of climate change and the passion needed to combat its effects. The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course is a phenomenal resource to educate and inspire students, teachers, and families as we all learn how and why to affect change for a better future. Kat Hutcheson, parent

Using this book, my kids learned the science behind climate change in a straightforward and dynamic manner. Through a basic understanding of chemistry as it relates to climate, we all grasped the significance of global warming. Now, we can discuss our own strategies to improve our climate as a family with the power of why. Rachel Durand, parent

My son was interested in the book and excited to do the experiments. I found it full of important information and activities that made it easy to understand this topic. Christina Keller, parent

About the Author

My name is Blair Lee. I have been involved in science education for over two decades, first as a community college professor and secondly as an author of science courses. I write concept-rich, hands-on science courses for homeschoolers, co-ops and small classrooms that include mainstream science presenting the accepted facts, theories, and models as would be recommended by the majority of practicing experts in each field of science. I am a passionate advocate of innovative academics where the focus is on how subjects are best learned. I have found that science is best learned when there is a thoughtful pairing of information followed directly with a hands-on application of that information, which is what I have done for the book, The Science of Climate Change: A Hands-On Course. I am an author for the critically acclaimed R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Series and the founder of Secular, Eclectic, Academic Homeschoolers.

Risks and challenges

I have done everything possible to ensure this book will be mailed to backers by July 20, 2017.

This is my first Kickstarter project. However, I am the author of four science courses, and I am aware of what it takes to get a book from its original form to a published work.

All the content for this book is written. The text has been peer reviewed and edited for grammar and content. Every activity has been completed by multiple people to ensure the instructions are easy to follow. Most of the illustrations are completed. The only thing left to do is to have the book laid out, printed, and delivered to you.

I am confident there will be no delay between the funding of the project and the printing. I have worked with these printers in the past, and they are very reliable. The printers are aware of the timeline I have set for this project.

My goal with this project is to provide information for kids and their parents about the most serious environmental crisis of our time. I will do everything possible to make sure that the backers of this project will be shipped these books by July 20, 2017. My number one goal with this project is not to make money; it is to educate and enact change by providing information about this important environmental topic.

If something were to go wrong, I promise to be forthright and available. If anything changes with this project, I will post an update immediately. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at blairleescience@gmail.com.
