Boys and girls, it's that time again. Burning Man is upon us and the Bijou crew is rallying for another year of being the most completely incongruous art installation on the playa. A theater in the middle of nowhere…just..because. (New to Burning Man or don't know what the Bijou is? Scroll down to the "What is the Black Rock Bijou?" section at the bottom of this page!) Once again, with your help, a hardy team of artists will construct a full-blown, delightfully dilapidated old single-screen theater that will pay homage to both the magic of the silver screen and the magic of an environment that time forgot. Once again, with your help, brave souls who wander into the deep playa between the hours of midnight and six am will encounter an edifice that sends chills up their spines and giant candy down their gullets. We find giving this kind of joy to people and to Black Rock City irresistible…and we hope, once again, you do too!
Beyond the normal costs associated with the construction, transportation, and storage cost of the Bijou, your support this year will give the green light for two of the biggest renovations this old movie theater has had!
1. Expansion and redesign of the lobby: We plan on extending the lobby space by more than double the space you remember. This way our patrons can connect, congregate, share experiences and enjoy their candy without the claustrophobia or being stuck out in a storm in line.
2. Ultra Violet Sidewall Art: This year's sidewall art will be painted with Wildfire Ultraviolet paints! This is no seventh grade bedroom mind you, we plan to illuminate our wall with a very powerful Wildfire UV canon of a light placed on a tower about 40 - 50 feet out. (For us geeks: this UV Light has 400 watts of power, an 80' throw, and no purple glare!)
A Marquee Enhancement!
One of the artists on the crew had a dream one night of enhancing the marquee by adding a 10' center piece, similar to the picture below. Being that this piece needs to withstand high winds and has custom neon lights, the price tag is high. If we reach an extended goal of $15,000 we will fulfill Release's dream and add this third enhancement to the Bijou!
Want to see where every dollar goes?
As usual, we do our best to be as transparent with our funds as possible. Take a look our expense breakdown for this year and click through to see a detailed breakdown of our expenses.

What is the Black Rock Bijou?
Inspired by the theater from "The Last Picture Show", the Black Rock Bijou brings that forgotten, wondrous experience of going to the movies back to life, with the brilliant, classic black-and-white films you almost forgot, in the kind of setting that's more or less vanished—the single-screen, small-town cinema. But just like Black Rock City itself, once a year it magically reappears. And because it's part of the magic of Burning Man, the movie and the candy are free to all who brave the long journey, by foot, bike, or art car, into the Bermuda Triangle of Burning Man, known as the "Deep Playa," for the late-night show.
What's the Bijou experience like?
Imagine wandering through deep playa and you see a light flickering in the distance. Upon closer inspection, you realize it's a brick building…a theater...in the middle of nowhere. You step through the doors and see a candy counter with a theater employee behind it who asks you what you would like? After being handed a movie sized Snickers bar, you make your way through the sea of people in the lobby and see a tiny red curtain on the back wall - no higher than your waist... do you go through? Is this a joke?
You pull the curtain back but before you can go through two people pop out with that "WTF" look on their face...you look at them, they look at you while shaking their heads and loudly whisper "You gotta go in there!" You kneel down, step through the curtain and... =)

Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge: Funding.
We have an incredible team of craftsman, carpenters, and-around creative boys and girls geared up to start working. The bijou has been lucky enough to receive funding for the last three burns. Whether it's private funding or from community, this old theater has found a way to stay open. Every year it's a challenge but with your continued permission, we'd like to continue the tradition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
