About this project
WHAT IS BLACK ROAD?!
A new INDEPENDENT FEATURE FILM shooting this summer in Southern Oregon!
This neo-noir thriller is about an ex-military drifter who's hired by a mysterious woman to protect her from a homicidal ex. With an A.I. implant in his head, DYLAN has a virtual companion and moral compass as his situation spirals out of control.
Like classic film noir, BLACK ROAD reflects the insecurities of our time; the flailing American job market, economic inequality, government intrusion on civil liberties and our growing love affair with technology.
At the heart of this movie is a simple story of desire and disillusionment. Our hero craves a stable life, satisfying work and meaningful relationships...but he's in trouble - caught between $18M in gold, a femme fatal and the maniac who wants her dead.
WHY THIS MOVIE?
Being long time fans of smart noir - from Alfred Hitchcock to Jim Thompson to John Huston to David Lynch - BLACK ROAD has been percolating and evolving for many years now. We finally have a script we love.
After making two naturalistic dramas, we're excited to bring a thriller to the big screen and see these hellbent characters come to life!
WHO'S IN THE CAST?
We're excited to announce we have cast Sam Daly in the lead! DYLAN appears in every single scene in this movie, so we're lucky to have such a talented, arresting presence like Sam carry the film. He's a third generation actor and the son of two very talented actors, Tim Daly and Amy Van Nostrand. His aunt is actress Tyne Daly.
You may recognize Sam as the menacing meth-head BUCK from REDWOOD HIGHWAY. His other credits include roles on THE OFFICE, MURDER IN THE FIRST, HOT IN CLEVELAND, CASTLE, and THE DALY SHOW. His film credits include RED TAILS, SUBMERGED, THE EDUCATION OF CHARLIE BANKS, etc.
We're also thrilled to announce Michelle Lombardo will play Dylan's rockstar cousin, Sarah. She's appeared in many films and TV shows including roles on ENTOURAGE, CALIFORNICATION, and MAD MEN. And we were fortunate to work with Michelle on our last two films, CALVIN MARSHALL and REDWOOD HIGHWAY.
We will be announcing more cast members throughout the campaign!
WHY ARE WE USING KICKSTARTER?
Crowdfunding offers an alternative to straight equity financing, allows us to connect directly with our audience early in the filmmaking process, and reduces risk and up front costs. As it's a challenging time to finance movies and make them viable in the marketplace, we're experimenting with a conservative business model, a smaller crew and a lower budget.
Nearly half of our production budget is being raised here on Kickstarter. Funds will go directly to filming expenses including cast & crew salaries, cast travel & lodging, food, location fees, permits, insurance, transportation & fuel, and equipment rentals.
We have a talented and inspired cast and crew coming together, and the train will tear out of the station in July once we reach our goal. You are making this film happen!
WHO ARE THE FILMMAKERS?
BLACK ROAD is written and directed by Gary Lundgren and produced by Anne Lundgren. Together we own Joma Films in Ashland, Oregon. Working with a team of Oregonians, we have made two features in the Rogue Valley, CALVIN MARSHALL (2009) and REDWOOD HIGHWAY (2014).
CALVIN MARSHALL is available world-wide on Netflix, iTunes, Amazon and Video on Demand. REDWOOD HIGHWAY is currently in theaters (June 2014) and will be available on DVD and Digital outlets in Summer 2014.
In addition to commercial directing and feature & trailer editing, Gary has taught screenwriting at Southern Oregon University. Anne produces commercials, music videos and features.
THE FILMMAKING TEAM
We've been blessed with an amazing team that has come together over the past ten years. Your contributions also help support these individuals as they work and grow their businesses in Oregon. Over the course of the campaign, watch for short videos highlighting the work of these film professionals.

Risks and challenges
Making a film involves coordinating hundreds of moving pieces including actor & location schedules, last minute changes due to weather, and technical issues with equipment.
Having completed two low-budget features, we know what it takes to get a movie done with limited resources.
While the risks are always present, thorough planning avoids most pitfalls. When surprises do happen, we look for creative solutions that often provide an even better outcome, "a happy accident."Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
