Black Princess is an inspirational children's book meant to promote self love and self acceptance, while building confidence in young black girls. It is inspired by my childhood best friend, commonly known amongst friends as "Kween Meemee." When we were nineteen she told me "I'm so tired of hearing that I am pretty for black girl. Why can't I just be pretty? Why does it have to be for a black girl?"
Meemee explained to me that U.S. beauty standards exclude black girls. She said her hair and skin color would never be right, that she could never compare to what is portrayed as beautiful in society and the media.
Meemee has grown into a strong, smart, beautiful, black Queen who doesn't need to be complimented on her looks to feel confident. The journey and the struggle to finding this confidence and peace is one that would have been made easier if she had access to more stories that showcased the beauty of black girls when she was growing up. She wishes there to be more in the media about black girls being beautiful the way they are, encouraging little girls to love themselves from a young age. Because of this, Black Princess was created.
This book aims to be a tool in reinforcing self love and acceptance through the written word and illustrations. The text is written in simple prose, reading like a poem, so that it is easy for young children to sound out but deep enough for an older audience. Every Black Princess in this book looks different, with different hair types/styles and skin tones. It hopes little girls will be able to relate to an element within the characters or recognize a similarity.
Funds raised will go towards revising and completing the illustrations along with paying the fees associated with printing the first set of copies in the United States. I am working with a wonderful artist who will complete and revise the rest of the illustrations once I have the funds to commission the rest of the work.
All rewards except the book will be shipped out within two weeks of the conclusion of the campaign. Books will be shipped out once the illustrations have been completed and the books have been printed, arriving sometime before February. Early copies may be shipped in time for Christmas if no complications arrive.
$5 donations will receive a large Black Princess sticker, $12 donations will receive a Black Princess magnet along with a Black Princess sticker, donations over $25 will receive a signed copy of Black Princess once the books have been printed plus a Black Princess sticker and magnet. First 10 people to back $100 will receive a unique, one of a kind poem.
Risks and challenges
This book faces the challenge of not meeting it's funding goal. If my goal is not met, I will not have the means to complete the illustrations and printing. I plan to overcome this by reaching out to my local community and spreading word about my project, encouraging pre-orders. If my goal is not met, I will continue to raise funds on my own until I can afford to publish this book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
