Hi everyone - Josh and Kris here, the minds behind BLACKOUT. It's been 10 years since we started and we’re insanely excited to return to NYC for our 10-year anniversary. For the most part, we don’t say much about BLACKOUT but this year we wanted to do something we’ve never done before...
As many of you know, our aim is to create an intense and unforgettable experience. To do that, we put our audiences through BLACKOUT alone (guests must also be over 18 and sign a waiver before entering). We have always believed this is the most effective way to create something you won’t ever forget. It is intense. Your connection to the actor is unparalleled and it makes for the most authentic journey for the audience.
Putting the audience through one at a time does not make for a great business model. Despite what many people seem to think…our show has never made much money. Everyone who is part of it does it because they are passionate. They do it for the love of the game.
And our actors work really fucking hard. So crazy hard. It's exhausting. So, we thought we’d try something new this year.
We want to raise money to pay our actors a fair wage. 100% of these proceeds will go directly to the daily run staff (12 actors, 2 stage managers, 2 box office). It will NOT be used for props, scenery, creators, insurance, or anything else. This is only for the box office, stage managers, and actors.
In return, we invite you to become one of us. It's been 10 years andit's time to peek behind the curtain…
BLACKOUT was formed in 2009 out of a series of theatrical workshops starting with "A Midsummer Nightmare" at the Vortex Theater on 11th Avenue and 22nd Street in far west Chelsea (way before the High Line was anything more than an abandoned train line that perched ominously above the edge of old Chelsea. We used to reminisce about BLACKOUT guests being so freaked out at the end of the show that when they were given the command to "RUN" the literally ran straight out the door, across the West Side Highway and into Chelsea Piers.)
The show has come a long way since then. We've been fortunate to work with Jason Blum and Blumhouse on several immersive activations like The Purge FEAR THE NIGHT, Purge: BREAKOUT, and INSIDIOUS: Into The Further VR Experience. As well as creating BLACKOUT shows with other amazing artists like the DJ Skrillex, the band Queens of the Stone Age, the Emmy-Award winning Secret Location in Toronto, Goldenvoice, AEG, Universal Pictures, Focus Features, and so many more...
But with each creative success, the bottom line remains...we send audience members through alone. Our financial profit remains very low, often times only breaking even. And that sucks...
We made a decision that IF we're going to come back, we're not going to do it at the expense of anyone's hard work. So we're going against our previous closed-door policy here at BLACKOUT to showcase a new ethos that reflects an experience that's been able to remain in your hearts and minds for the last ten years.
Our actors deserve to be paid for their work. Please help us do that. In return, you get to be a part of this experience ("and for this experience to become a part of you"). It was built for you. It continued because of you. Now we want to build it with you...
Risks and challenges
Ticket Prices vs Expenses: At only $45/ticket and only (approx) 20 people per hour, our income will never match our expenses (venue, insurance, props, certificates, staffing, taxes, fees, etc). We've always managed to break even but the actors are the ones who tend to suffer the most because they work so unbelievably hard during the run. That's why we're trying to increase the actor's payment with the generosity of our community.
Final Payouts: If we reach our goal of $16,000 that means we can increase every person's salary by an additional $1000 (which is unreal and amazing!) Everything we make on top of that (fingers crossed) will then be divvied up by hourly salary rates (not all actors work every single night).
Competition: There are several other immersive theatrical experiences in the city now. Audiences now have more choice on where they can go and what they can do for Halloween thrill-seeking. With your financial help we can ensure our actors are able to perform to the level everyone is expecting. Trust us, it's hard, as far as off-off-broadway actors go, extra money is one of the only things that helps.
If you have any questions at all, please ask!
We want to be clear (one more time) that these funds are only being used to supplement the actors salary. We'll take care of the show and make sure everything happens, please help us show the actors how much they mean to this whole process. Thank you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
