Black Ops is a Cajun Season-all and Blackening Seasoning, created because store brand blackening products lacked flavor depth as they generally have too few ingredients and the taste of salt, celery, or paprika take over. It took almost a year and over 50 versions to achieve the desired flavor balance; a full flavored blackening seasoning with just the right amount of heat.
This product was never created with the intention of selling it as a commercial product, but with the number of requests from family and friends for more and more and more of our special seasoning we decided it was time to enlist the services of a co-packer and in 2011 we started selling Black Ops online.
We wanted a superior gourmet blackening seasoning, which we achieved; in addition we found through our own use and our customers that Black Ops is a versatile season-all that can be used in a myriad of dishes. Customers love that Black Ops is significantly lower in sodium than most spice mixes, and has no sugar and no MSG.

How did we come up with the name?
Originally, we used the name Jake’s Dirt for the product when we mixed it up for family and friends, because our nephew Jake quipped that it looked like we were covering the chicken with dirt. But we knew we needed a better name if we were going to sell it. So we asked our son, Mitch, the creative writer in the family, to come up with a better military related name. This is how we arrived at the name Blackening Ops, which we later shortened to Black Ops
Does our product exist? How much product have we sold?
Our product exists and has been successfully sold online, at food shows, fairs, and markets. We have sold more than 500 bottles of product and have a number of loyal customers who want the product in stores!
How long will it take to get your pledge reward?
While our current inventory lasts, rewards will be shipped with 5 business days. If our inventory is depleted, shipping could take up to 4 weeks. We have significant original Black Ops product inventory to cover this campaign but we have limited inventory of Desert Storm, Smoke Screen and t-shirts.
Why do we need your help? What will the money be used for?
What we have learned in the last 18 months is that many people want to buy products like this in the grocery store, not online. We have also learned that we need to reduce the bottle size to get the price point down to $5 in the store. So with that in mind we need to pay for:
- New Labels
- Bar Codes
- Significant inventory of store sized bottles
- Sales & Marketing
What other products do you have in the works?
We have Black Ops - Desert Storm, Black Ops that is 3 times hotter, and Black Ops – Smoke Screen, a hickory smoked gourmet sea salt, we will continue to sell these products online. In development, we have 2 products Black Ops – Spud Missile, a potato and fry seasoning, and Black Ops – Cajun Alfredo (might need a better name), this is an amazing pasta sauce.
We have numerous additional product ideas but don’t want to look too far into the future. Things like chips, salsas, hot sauces, frozen dinners, and bold drinks await future development. Our most expensive aspiration is a spicy vodka called Black Ops – Shrapnel.

Risks and challenges
This project is in its second phase with a fully developed product. There is no risk to receiving the rewards promised. That said there are long-term risks of acceptance by the grocery stores and maintaining significant sales volume to remain in the stores that do carry our product.
