The Blackbird Stainless Steel Safety Razor (Canceled)
Blackbird: An heirloom safety razor machined from stainless steel finished in black oxide or brushed steel.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign. We are excited to bring Blackbird to life, but realize that our pricing is unsustainable so we are cancelling this campaign to focus on lowering costs. Unnecessary costs will be eliminated to make the Blackbird razor more affordable without sacrificing quality. Blackbird will relaunch on Kickstarter on August 1st.

Men lead hectic lives. We wake up early, go to bed late, and fill every minute in between with responsibilities. With so much to do we rarely allow time for ourselves. We deserve a few minutes to slow down and prepare for the onslaught of a busy day. It’s time we throw away our canned shaving cream, stop using overpriced plastic razors, and wet shave like our grandfathers used to. With the right tools and technique, shaving can be transformed from just another chore into a morning routine to relish. Blackbird was designed as a tool to elevate the ritual of wet shaving with performance and quality to match its beautiful aesthetics.
Blackbird is a safety razor machined from solid stainless steel right here in the United States. Its design is inspired by the iconic SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft. Like its namesake, the Blackbird safety razor combines sleek curves with sharp angles and a black finish.
Blackbird is machined to incredibly tight tolerances from 303 stainless steel, ensuring proper blade alignment. The heft of stainless steel and a unique head angle guarantee an effortless, mild, and highly efficient shave.
We've made two different handles for Blackbird to give you two ways to enjoy one great shave. The short version is 70mm for superior maneuverability. The long version is 101mm long for better balance and grip.
Choose the handle which best suits you or get them both and swap when you please.
Blackbird works with any standard double edge razor blade. Fine machining and a slot and tab head design ensure proper blade alignment for a beautiful, consistent shave.
Blackbird is finished in black oxide, the same finish used on firearm barrels. We wanted Blackbird to have a truly unique look so we chose a finish that would add character and allow some of the machine marks to show through rather than have a flat, solid black finish. Black oxide is beautifully imperfect with slight color variations throughout the finished surface. Unlike coatings which bond to the surface, black oxide is a chemical conversion process which means it adds no thickness and won't chip or flake off. Instead, it will age and wear gracefully over time, developing a patina truly unique to each owner.
We also understand that the black oxide finish isn't for everyone. That's why we've decided to offer Blackbird in a beautiful, brushed stainless finish. Backers interested in this finish should select from the standard rewards. After the campaign is over, a survey will be sent to backers, allowing them to choose their preferred finish.
Like all uncoated stainless steel safety razors, it is recommended to remove the razor blade often to prevent surface rust from occurring where the razor meets the blade.
Each razor ships in a beautiful solid cherry hinged box. The boxes are CNC milled to perfectly fit your razor and laser engraved with the Blackland name.
Every bathroom counter could use a little improvement. Proudly show off your razor and favorite brush with this beautiful cherry stand with acrylic brush hook. The stand is compatible with any safety razor handle less than 15mm in diameter. The brush hook is 1.25" in diameter and .25" thick.
My name is Shane Swartzlander and I founded Blackland in 2015. I’m not a designer or engineer by trade. My passion for wet shaving and love of making things motivated me to create a safety razor as a fun project. What began as a hobby eventually evolved into an obsession. Over the past year, I’ve spent countless hours studying engineering and learning the intricacies of creating a fine razor. When I began this project, I had no expectations of actually bringing my design to market. But, once I began shaving with the razor myself, I realized I had created something others might also enjoy. After several prototypes and many mistakes and frustrations, the Blackbird safety razor was born.
Production is scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2015 with packaging and shipping to be completed by the end of October 2015.
Risks and challenges
We have partnered with competent manufacturers in the USA to minimize the risks of quality defects and delays. The hands-on nature of quality control during machining ensures that there won’t be widespread manufacturing defects. As with many Kickstarter projects, the primary challenge will be shipping our product on schedule. We’ve allowed additional production time in case of delays, but unforeseen issues are still a possibility. Most importantly, any problems or delays will always be openly and honestly shared with backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
