Imagine being a kid, and your parents bring you a crate full of all types of books about dragons, and magical cites, and cool new worlds in outer space. You are so excited you pick up the first book you see and dive in, and as the story takes you to new places, and your imagination explodes you notice one thing… No one looks like you.
Imagine asking your mom to read you a bedtime story about a princess who looks like you, and only having the choice of 3 or 4 books that represent you. Imagine looking in the book store for a book about a sorcerer who has magical powers, saves the world, and happens to have an afro too, and not finding him because that book just doesn’t exist. That is the reality of black and brown children. Although through the years many books have been written that tell stories that represent children of color, it is still not enough considering the types of books that still do not. I am here to change that.
The two books I am campaigning for mean so much to me. Sasha B is an 8 year old little black girl who is wild and carefree navigating through life with supportive and loving parents that allow her to be herself. She is free to be herself. Free to make mistakes. She can do and be anything she wants. Nothing prohibits her, and her adventures have no boundaries!
Aiden is a 3 year old black boy who is special needs. He is wild, loving, and excited for life, but he has a speech delay and it makes things hard on him, and his family. But he goes on an adventure and learns how to set his words free!
They are exciting and relatable, and will warm the hearts of your children . Please help me bring them into your homes, and into the hearts of your families! Let's change that narrative and show that black children have crazy adventures too. They ride dragons, they cast spells, they are wild, and carefree. They have special needs, they do ballet, they struggle, they live in palaces, they are pirates and warriors too! They have special powers, and fight crime. They do everything that all children do! Risks and challenges
I am self publishing and although it would be a dream come true to have unlimited amounts of time to write and create, I unfortunately cannot write full time as I am a mother of 3 and still in school until August. So I face challanges
* Paying out of pocket for high quality illustrations is expensive.
*Finding an illustrator that can bring my books to life with the same passion and energy that matches my energy to create them on paper in picture form can very difficult.
*Finding a good editor who can also put the books together for hard cover publication is expensive.
* Not giving up when it seems like I am in this by myself. I know there are people out there who want to bring these homes into the lives of little black and brown children, we just have to find one another.
