Overview

Necrofugitive is a brutal 2D action platformer about the prison escape of an evil shapeshifter and his attempts to evade the realm's justice. Fight, sneak, morph, and claw your way through pursuing lawmen and merciless bounty hunters in your desperate bid for freedom!

Fight for your life in a Late Medieval world against armies of enemies determined to slay you!

Necrofugitive is about a mysterious being known as the Prisoner, a fugitive with shapeshifting powers running from the law for the terrible curse that he bears. Inside him dwells the Slaughter Demon, a terrible creature with the destructive power to annihilate villages and massacre armies. Confronted by this alarming news, all able bodied men have been summoned to defend the realm and to bring this rampaging fugitive to justice. Can you escape the hefty bounty placed upon your head and successfully secure your freedom?

Gameplay in Necrofugitive is focused on replicating the feeling of being hunted and on the run. Just like any classic prison escape, there is only one shot at freedom. This means if you are captured or killed, you are down for good. You only have one life, so make it count! Enemies will patrol the world, actively looking for you and will relentlessly pursue you if you are caught. 

Heavily armored opponents are tricky to deal with!

The game focuses on delivering challenging fast paced combat and intense fight or flight mechanics as you are pursued by your many enemies. The Prisoner has very powerful abilities at his disposal - claws, tendrils, armblades, and even disguises are in your shapeshifting arsenal to assist you in your escape.

Survive long enough, and you gain the opportunity to fight back with tremendous power - the Prisoner has a unique ability to violently morph into a very powerful monster: the Slaughter Demon.

The Slaughter Demon emerges

The Slaughter Demon is the Prisoner's ultimate form - frighteningly powerful abilities are unlocked in this form, including the ability to summon demonic hordes to fight for you! But this isn't without drawbacks - news of a unholy rampaging monster spreads quickly, and entire armies will be raised to take you down. Expect big battles on a titanic scale!

Extra focus is being placed on making enemies with intelligent and aggressive AI that have the ability to platform just as well as a player can. Wherever you go, your enemies can follow. 

Platforming AI

Necrofugitive will also feature a highly customizable skill tree that allows you to adapt your playstyle in between stages. Featuring both passive perks and active abilities, you have the option of choosing between many different ability branches, from a silent but lethal shadow crawler or an all out killing machine focused on leaving the messiest possible remains of your enemies!

A day/night system allows you to complement your chosen playstyle. Before starting every stage, you have the option of emerging during day or night to take advantage of darkness if you choose, but be careful! Enemies adapt according to the time of day too. Light patrols will be more frequent during the day, but more powerful enemies roam the world at night.

Guards and sentries aren't the only thing to worry about. Bounty hunters are also out for your blood. They are a special type of enemy that actively prowl the world looking for you, and will stop at nothing to bring you to justice. Bounty hunters are very dangerous and possess their own unique special abilities to assist them in hunting you down!

Necrofugitive's level design is both handmade and procedural generated - sections of levels are designed by hand and then pieces together by a generator. Combined with Necrofugitive's permadeath mechanics, and upgrade system, the game takes several nods from roguelite titles.

Necrofugitive takes place in a world inspired by the Late Middle Ages - a world of  superstition, war, and paranoia running rampant. After an alchemy experiment gone wrong, a captive that was imprisoned in the deepest dungeon of the ruined fortress of Nuir slipped his bonds and murdered his captors. The whole realm is thrown into turmoil as a massive manhunt is organized to bring this shapeshifting monster from Hell to justice! Inspired by the medieval world's fascination of wicked demons and monstrous creatures, Necrofugitive puts you in the shoes of a terrible creature that is elevated to a leviathanic reputation as whole armies are levied to take you down!

The Game: Necrofugitive will be digitally distributed across Steam, PS4 and Switch.

Soundtrack: Receive a digital copy of Necrofugitive's soundtrack, composed by Edwin Montgomery, who is also responsible for the music behind other videogame titles such as Warhammer 40k: Regicide and Wasteland.

Alpha Tester: You will receive very early builds of Necrofugitive before anyone else, and will be part of an exclusive group that will be used for vital feedback on the development of the game. We will rely on you for gameplay, special ability and level design feedback - with this reward you have a very high potential to influence the game design itself!

Design A Perk - Leave your own imprint on Necrofugitive's skill tree by working with us to develop a perk that will be used in the game itself. You may add anything from passive abilities to wacky gameplay gimmicks - be as creative as you want!

Design A Special Ability - Design a concept for a fully animated special ability! You will make full use of the Prisoner's shapeshifting powers and be involved in the design, look and feel of your special ability! (Final design decisions will have to be made up with us. Don't worry though, we won't be strict!) 

Design A Level - With this tier, you will be given the opportunity to craft your very own level. Truly a monumental contribution to our game, you will work with us to design every artistic aspect of the environment, including setting, time of day, weather, mood, and overall look and feel of a piece of the world of Necrofugitive. You will also be involved in writing a piece of medieval lore for your chosen level! (Balancing and level design are still under our purview!)

Ryan Fluharty (Art, Animation, & Game Design) - Ryan is a freelance artist turned videogame developer. He is obsessed with all things pixel art.

Christian Schoenig (Programming) - Christian has conceded to the fact that the only way he will play good games ever again is if he makes them.

Edwin Montgomery (Music & Sound Design) - Edwin is a composer and sound designer who has created music and sounds for many fantasy game worlds including Warhammer 40,000, Game of Thrones, Dungeons & Dragons and Wasteland.

Necrofugitive has currently been in development for a year and a half now, and we've relied mostly on developing this game in our spare time. With your support, your funding will help us secure many of the things we need to truly make this game something special. Funds will go to commissioning a complete soundtrack, contracting more people to work with us, legal fees, and overall improving the quality and content of Necrofugitive.

Stretch Goals - As of right now, we want to focus on delivering the core aspect of our game. We would only focus on  might introduce the problem of us giving promises we can't keep - however, if our campaign blows away all of our expectations you bet we'll use the extra funding to add stretch goals that could really make this game shine!

Risks and challenges

Necrofugitive is a passion project at heart. Development so far has been through sheer hobbyist love for the game, and we would love to take this project to greater heights so we can deliver something truly special. We would never have gotten as far as we have if we didn't love what we do. Short of some freak accident or some other unfortunate lethal circumstance, Necrofugitive will be completed, but this campaign will determine how much we can deliver.

That being said, we have minimized risks by going 100% digital and forgoing physical rewards. We want to focus on delivering the best game we possibly can by solely focusing on what we can improve with our game.
