Introducing PINE  

PINE is a universal and wireless controller for motion controlled photography & videography. It lets you create automated camera movements, panoramic giga-pixel and 360° photo sphere photographs, motion controlled time-lapse, automated 3D model photogrammetry imagery, and more.


What PINE is and isn't

PINE is a motion controller. Just a controller. You can connect it to almost any motorized slider or pan-tilt unit on the market. PINE will control your connected systems, allowing you to do fascinating things - keep reading to find out more :-)

PINE is not a complete motion kit. It doesn't include any sliders or pan-tilt units. You are free to choose by yourself or choose one of our bundles to get started with PINE.

Universal and Flexible       

With PINE you are not limited to any hardware. PINE can be connected to any slider or pan-tilt unit with stepper motors and the controller can trigger various camera models. Each Controller has four (4) motor outputs and two (2) camera outputs

This makes PINE the perfect solution for professional users who already have their own system, beginners who want to start with motion controlled applications, and do-it-yourself creators who want to bring motion to their projects.

      


PINE Motion App       

Beautifully Powerful

The most comfortable way to control your system. Just use your smartphone or tablet and the PINE Motion App will give you access to the vast features of the PINE Controller.

Once you have everything set-up, the PINE controller will finish its application even if the app is disconnected or your phone's battery dies.

Available for Android and iOS devices.


High Quality Connectors & Cables     

Lockable high quality Hirose HR10 motor connectors make PINE a long-lasting device that will meet your professional needs.

We will also offer custom motor connection cables to help you adapt PINE to your devices. Let us know where you want to connect PINE and we will get the cables for you. There are two (2) cables included with each controller.

Why are there 6 pins on each connector? Each connector contains four connections for the stepper motor, plus two additional connections for an mechanic limit switch, which can be used optionally.

Wirelessly Expandable  

PINE is wirelessly expandable using newest Bluetooth Low Energy 4.1 technology with a range of up to 100 meters or 300 ft. If you need more than four axes, you can simply connect another controller. There are no limitations and no cables needed. You can control every connected controller right from your smartphone.

   

A rare mode among other controllers. With its unique diagonal traversal technique, PINE will fully automatically create single (mosaic) images that are arranged in a matrix and you can then stitch to a stunning high-resolution panoramic image with a software like PTGui.   

 

  • Easy Setup – Just set your camera’s focal length, sensor size, and amount of image overlap and PINE will automatically calculate the right amount of images.
  • Right-Left-Right Traversal – is the most common way of capturing the mosaics. Our motion controller will take images row after row.
  • Diagonal Traversal – is a never-before-seen capturing method we developed for this mode. Mosaics are captured in a diagonal fashion beginning from the upper left to the lower right hand corner. The advantage of this method is that mosaics that lay close together are captured within a smaller time-frame compared to the Right-Left-Right traversal – resulting in a better images quality for scenes with a lot of motion.    

Capture full 360-degree images with PINE and a pan-tilt head. PINE will fully automatically take multiple images to all directions which you can then stitch to one 360-degree image with a software like PTGui. This mode works for single images and even 360-degree timelapse videos.    

  • Set rows & columns – Specify the amount of single pictures for one 360 degree image by specifying the number of rows and how many horizontal pictures per row should be taken.
  • 360° Time-Lapse – An advanced application which combines the 360 degree mode and the time-lapse mode. Multiple 360 degree images are taken one after another which can be combined to a time-lapse video sequence. For this mode feature you can use additional axes like a sliders in addition to the pan & tilt head.  
     

Automate your photogrammetry workflow for 3D model scanning with a three-axis setup. PINE will not only save you a lot of time in scanning objects, but will also give you never-before-seen results in terms of accuracy and resolution. PINE will trigger your camera, then rotate your object a few degrees, then another picture is taken, and so on until you have images from every angle imaginable.   

 

  • Set amount of pictures – by defining the pictures per turntable rotation and the number of vertical rows, you can influence the accuracy and amount of detail of the 3D model.  
  • Fully Synchronized -  PINE will rotate your object, move your camera, and even trigger the camera. This way everything is synchronized and fully automated. All you have to do is process the single images in post-processing with a photogrammetry software.

Create automated camera movements with PINE’s video mode. Unlimited numbers of keyframes and stop-motion functionality let you create the most complex moves. This mode finds use in the movie and film making business, live-production filming, and visual effects video production.   

  • Loop Mode – will result in a repeated back and forth movement between the keyframes which is perfect for filming interviews or similar events.
  • Stop-Motion capability – allows you to move from keyframe to keyframe for even more flexibility.    

One of the most famous modes for motion control that we extended to support moves with unlimited numbers of keyframes and stop-motion capabilities. PINE will move and trigger your camera in a shoot-move-shoot sequence for perfect timelapse videos.   

  • Slave Mode – Utilizing the AUX input of PINE, you can use Time-Lapse in Slave Mode. Combine PINE with an external exposure ramping device like the VIEW by Timelapse+ and create motion controlled holy grail day-to-night and night-to-day time-lapse.
  • Stop-Motion capabilities – an animation technique which will bring any object to life, as for example seen in the famous Lego movies. Alter your scene after each picture has been taken and proceed when you are ready.
  • Motion Ramping – Creating ramped camera motions (slowly accelerating and decelerating) is especially tricky for motion controlled time-lapse videos. PINE will change the amount of movement for each shot in order to achieve this useful effect.
  • Test Modes – Nothing is more frustrating than setting up a time-lapse and then realizing it didn’t turn out the way you wanted when you check it at home. Use PINE’s Exposure Test, Interval Test, and Movement Test to verify everything is the way you like before wasting your time.  
      

Always have the right target in view - and focus. Perfect for scenes with multiple objects of importance. Simply switch between multiple targets with one touch.   

  • Naming Scenes – Give each saved scene a name in order to help you remember which scene points to which object/location.
  • Background Images – Even more helpful to visualize where the saved scenes are pointing at. Take a picture with your smartphone camera or choose an existing one.
  • Move Speeds – Specify for each scene how fast the move to the new perspective will happen. 
       

Reach for the stars with PINE's tracking capabilities for the sharpest astro photographs. PINE will compensate earth’s rotation – allowing you to create long exposure shots of the night sky. Track stars, the moon, or the sun.   

  • Sidereal Tracking – For tracking stars. Full compensation of earth’s rotation.
  • 1/2 Sidereal Tracking – Compensates half of the speed of earth’s rotation. Use this if you track stars but still want objects in the image foreground to be sharp.
  • Lunar Tracking – For tracking the moon.
  • Solar Tracking – For tracking the sun.
  • Night Mode – Turning this mode on in the PINE Motion App will turn off all the LED lights on the controller so they won't affect your perfect Astro-photographs.

Let it spin with turntable mode and create simple but professional product presentations. PINE is also capable of multitasking. Use multiple modes like turntable and video mode together for more flexibility.    

  • Adjusting Speed – Easily determine on the fly how fast the turntable is rotating.
  • Multitasking capable – Use together with Video Mode or another mode.   

This mode makes PINE the ultimate all-in-one device. Use PINE without motors and experience an advanced and accurate Intervalometer. This mode works perfect in a multitasking setup with any other mode. Each PINE controller can trigger two cameras and by connecting more controllers, you can create some interesting applications and even add delays so you can have cameras triggered at different times. 

  • Multitasking – Use this mode in combination with any other mode of the PINE controller.
  • Flexible Time Settings – Each time value can be adjusted in steps of 100ms (0.1 seconds). Most Intervalometer on the market only allow you to set whole second values.
  • Perfect Accuracy – PINE outputs time signals with an accuracy of smaller than 0.1%. 
  • Adding Delays – Since you are able to trigger multiple cameras with PINE (especially when you connect multiple controllers), the PINE Motion App allows you to define delays between multiple cameras. This way you can have cameras triggered at different times. It’s as flexible as you need it to be.
  • Exposure & Interval Ramping – Linearly adjusts the exposure and/or interval time to a new desired value over a specified time frame.

Nic-O-Tilt Head

You can get the Nic-O-Tilt Head with our bundle reward for a great value. This high quality precision pan & tilt head is a product due to a cooperation of Gunther Wegner (from LRTimelapse), Nico Engel Photo & Engineering, and Kids of all ages. Like our PINE Controller, it's quality made in Germany.

The unit has worm gears without any backslash and Arca-Swiss compatible rail profiles which are integrated directly into the body. Multiple 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads allow for easy and flexible mounting to tripods or sliders. The unit even has multiple integrated water spirit levels which allow for perfect alignment. The knurl screws on each axis can be used to rotate the axes by hand (for adjustment/calibration/storing position etc). This wouldn't be possible else due to the worm gears. 

With additional Arca-Swiss rails, this system can be easily adapted in size. This is helpful for nodal-point alignment for Giga-Pixel and 360 degree image capturing.

The Nic-O-Tilt has the same high quality motor connectors as the PINE Controller. This makes the two work well together.

3D Scan Photogrammetry Bundle

Our photogrammetry bundle is of high quality and all manufactured in Germany. 

It includes:

- Nic-O-Tilt -> Pan Unit (used as turntable)
- Custom made turntable disk with size of your choice

- L-bracket for camera mount
- Mounting plate for PINE Controller
- Slider -> choose from the following lengths: 40cm, 60cm (other lengths by request)
- NEMA17 stepper motor with gearbox and custom connector extension

All the units have the same motor connectors. Everything harmonizes perfectly together.

If you want to configure your own set with other sliders and turntables and just want to use our PINE Controller, you are free to do so. However, this bundle will give you a ready to go solution consisting of long-lasting high quality components.  

 

 

 

Where we are

The current version of PINE is the result of extensive testing and optimizing - going through multiple hardware revisions. Everything is planned to the detail and we are ready for mass production. We already successfully produced a small set of devices in a mass production setup. This helped us to verify that each step in the production process goes smoothly. After successful funding, we can jump right into the production process with our trusted partners. This way, Kickstarter backers can expect their rewards without a long delay within two to three months after our Kickstarter campaign.


Timeline  

Manufacturing a technically advanced device takes time. However, we are well prepared and are confident to keep our promises to our backers. Below you can see what we have been doing and what we will be doing in the months to come.

Team        

As a team, we have been building and using motion control systems since 2013. With PINE, we finally want to share our work with the world and see what amazing work will be done with it.

Patrick is an experienced Electrical Engineer with over 10 years of experience in the electronics industry. He got a vocational degree in Electrical Engineering (a 3.5 year long dual apprenticeship) in Germany and worked in Quality Management for an industry leader of switch gear for over 7 years. There he developed and programmed test equipment for switching devices like pcb relays. Patrick now lives in California where he is in his final semester for an undergraduate bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. With over 10 years of experience in programming and electronics, Patrick writes software and designs hardware for the PINE controller. He continues to work in the industry where he tests and troubleshoots electronic hardware components.

Moritz has a Master of Science degree in Computer science in Media. He is an independent film maker and has created multiple marketing videos for large companies. Moritz also works at the HHF in Munich - THE German film-school where he lectures and gives photography/filming workshops (incl. time-lapse photography). With his extensive background in photography and film making, Moritz brings ideas and user experience to the PINE Controller and tests our products in the field.

Risks and challenges

This is our first Kickstarter campaign. We gave and will continue to give our best to make PINE successful and bring it out to our supporters. We planned out everything in detail and can start with mass production right after successful funding. The device is fully developed in terms of hardware and we continue to optimize the software part. Our Android smartphone app is ready to go, while the iOS app is still in development but will be ready by the time we begin shipping.

Even with all the planning, unexpected delays with production can happen, but we will make sure our supporters get their rewards on time.
