We’re making our second feature-length film, thanks for checking our project out!

(Scroll down to extended targets for details)
If you want to help, contribute to our campaign, become one of our astronauts, and get some of the rewards we're offering! From £25 you get to see the finished film; there is some cool swag to be had, plus some special behind the scenes access.
(Whole list of rewards below!)
Marcus has just been in an accident in space. He’s lucky enough to be able to contact radio help from your escape pod. He can stay put, do as he’s told, get to Earth safe. OR he can risk his life further to try rescue someone else. What would you do!?
It takes place in a future when mining asteroids near our planet has become commonplace, and there are people out there, extracting resources for private companies. Companies such as Tyco Corp, the one in the film. It's a story about courage in adverse circumstances, but also about so much more... because Marcus also has the black box from the station, which contains important details of the accident... what happened up there?
If you are even thinking about pledging, we love you already :) EVERY BACKER gets a cool personalised digital badge like the one below:
From that point onwards, the more you pledge the more rewards you get:
Get your name in the film as a THANKS credit + a DIGITAL BADGE with the Tyco Corp. logo (the asteroid mining company in the film) + our eternal gratitude :)

Some of the rewards cannot be sent until we shoot the film, but whatever can be sent before, will be, we want our astronauts to get their stuff as soon as possible.
In addition, the delivery date for the DVD is an estimate at this point, as we’ll need to work with the distributor -once the film is finished- to set a date. DVDs will be region 2 (UK, Continental Europe and more), which is the reason we cannot ship internationally the £50 DVD reward or anything above (also containing the DVD!).
Here’s a table with all our estimated delivery dates:
We still have a few days of the campaign to go, and want to use it to suggest some more extended targets we believe would make the film bigger and better. They are all listed below and we will make new ones available if/when we unlock the current one (they will all include the costs of making the rewards, delivery, etc.)
With any additional funds in these last few hours, we’ll access better quality materials, especially for details: more of the really good stuff (EVA foam, vinyls, some 3D printing) and less of the not-as-good (wood, polystyrene), AND use better tools. This will allow us to get the bulk of the build out of the way much quicker, so that we have more time to focus on the finishing touches that will really shine on screen. If we hit this goal, every backer will receive an additional update detailing the set building process with some of the build secrets. We'll even do some sweet 360º stuff like this. Or this:
We’ll shoot the space shots using a physical 3D-printed/hand-made and hand-painted model miniature of Marcus' escape pod and then enrich it with computer effects (as opposed to generate all the space shots on the computer), much like we are approaching the rest of floating objects in the film. If we hit this goal we will send all backers a special update about the model so you can see it up close and personal.
We will make the film's special effects extra spectacular and awesome, by getting some extra hands and resources for them. If we hit this goal we will send an extra behind-the-scenes update showing the firsts tests for effects on the set. We will shoot these before shooting the movie.
The original plan was to start the build at our base, then move to a bigger location to finish the build at and another to shoot at. With more money in the pot we could afford to hire one bigger build location from the beginning which will save loads of time on logistics, and allow us to get through the basic structural build much faster, so we have more time to dedicate to the set detail. If we hit this goal we will send an extra behind-the-scenes update of the set’s progress for all our lovely backers!
Ángel Delgado - Director
Spanish-born and UK-based, Angel started film-making 15 years ago. Black box is his second feature-length film as a director, of which he is also the co-writer and co-producer. His first feature, "Brothers' Day" will be available on DVD in several countries early 2016. He has undertaken production roles in independent features in UK, Spain and USA- such as the British horror "Deadtime" and the award-winning comedy "Best little whore house in Rochdale." He has also directed several short films including sci-fi "Reaction" and worked on the visual effects for the the sci-fi promo feature "Traveler Zer0".
Gemma Bradley - Producer
Gemma has been film-making, in Northern Ireland and England for 13 years. "Black box" is her second feature-length film, her first also being "Brothers' Day", together with Angel and their production company Newfound Planet Films. She has undertaken various roles in a number of fiction projects, including, "Anne Green" and "The Wastelander". She also produced and directed several behind-the-scenes documentaries. She has freelanced on various high-profile corporate, commercial and event management projects, as well as delivering media training.
Luca Rudlin - Director of Photography
Luca has been working with Angel and Gemma for over 4 years as DOP and Colourist. He is the founder of People Staring and has a solid background in corporate and commercial media work and music video production. He has worked on the feature films "Brothers Day" and "Welcome to no man’s land" as well as numerous other shorts and documentaries. Black Box is his third feature film as Director of Photography.
Jesús Delgado - Production Designer
Jesús is an Spanish Illustrator and designer. His work is widely published via his international client base including LG, International bank BBVA and the LEGO Hispabrick magazine. He has worked on several short films including “Eso que paso” and “Reaction”, and has worked very closely with Newfound Planet films for over 4 years, designing logos, posters, as well as costumes and sets and storyboards for past and upcoming projects.
We have many more talented cast and crew working on bringing the film to life, people we have worked with before, and whom we look forward to collaborating with again, as well as a few new comers!
Our first feature film together has been selected for international festivals, had a small theatrical release and it now has been picked up for DVD distribution in several countries and it will be available in places like HMV, Sainsbury's, Asda, Amazon, itunes, google play and Hulu early 2016 in UK, Ireland, Australia, USA, and Canada.
Science fiction shorts
We are both passionate about the science fiction genre. Angel has written and directed the short “Reaction”, which was selected for international festivals, and created VFX for the “Traveler 0” feature promo. Gemma has worked on the set build and shoot for the upcoming “The Wastelander”. When we started working together were both keen to create some sci-fi worlds of our own! So after “Brothers Day”, we built a set for and shot a Sci fi short, as a promo for a big budget feature that we have in development. A lot of of our Black Box team also worked on this much larger set build with us, and we are excited to be making another spaceship with them!
Even if you can't contribute financially, you can still help us by spreading the word, help people find the film and get updates about the movie! It will still be greatly appreciated!
You can share and like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and spread the #BlackBoxTheFilm word :) And/or connect on Instagram for regular photo updates- we would love to see your pics too!
Or if social media is alien territory for you, you can still EMAIL your friends! Send the campaign link to people you know so they can get involved too
We’ll be using the funds in pre production of the film, and in actual shooting it. We call this Phase 1 (with phase 2 being postproduction).
Making a feature film is a difficult and expensive venture. Even for the big studios, it takes years. And even independent films can get easily up to hundred of thousands of pounds. We calculate Black box will end up costing in the region of 200k. A lot of people would say you can’t do it for less. But we have done it before, it is possible. Granted, takes a lot of hard work and it is not for everyone.
We’re used to keeping costs down in bigger projects by working with amazing, passionate cast and crew who don’t mind working for food and are excited about the script. And by asking for favours, borrowing tools and additional kit, scrounging discarded materials, finding the odd deal and haggling for whatever is left.
We understand this is not the ideal way of working. Yes, we’d rather have a bit more money. But we don’t. The money we hope to raise, we’ll use together with our personal savings to date and what we can save from here on in, plus we continue to work on other funding sources such as corporate sponsorship. If we can find more, the film will be bigger, and better.
But if this is all we have, we’ll still make a great film with it. Because we don’t believe in waiting to be given the opportunity, and because there will never be a better time than now. In the words of film producer Jason Blum, “raise whatever you can and shoot whatever you can for whatever amount”.
This is what we are doing, and if you too rise to the challenge when you’re told “you can’t”, you’re already an astronaut, or anything you want to be. Or at least are on your way there. We hope you’ll want to help us get there too.
Risks and challenges
We have every intention to begin production in the winter of 2015; however, we also seek to make the best film possible and delays may occur because of set build logistics or scheduling. This isn't our first time though and we thrive on the challenges film production throws at us.
Also, we are aware that excellent-looking visual effects in micro budget independent film is often a concern, however we have recently upgraded our gear and have a team with years of experience in this field who are totally ready for the challenge. As for the zero gravity effects, we understand these are an especially important effect for a film set in space, and we’ve been developing a way of creating them by using a combination of computer-generated graphics and more traditional camera tricks and practical props. We think using practical sets, props and effects, enriched by CGI (as opposed to create everything in the computer) is the way forward at any scale:
In any case, as we take this journey together, we'll always communicate as regularly as possible with our contributors.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
