Operation Kickstart! Updated rules, new rulebook, new units & models.
Alternate Events: WWII is a skirmish-scale miniature game set in an alternate World War II where occult horrors and retro sci-fi wonders abound.
This Kickstarter enables Blackball Games to reboot the line, launching an all new version of the rules, and re-tool the product line to make it easier to get started, and easier to play.
The money will fund production of a new 250-page rulebook that combines the first edition core rules and occult expansion, as well as the new Detachment and Starter Pack product organization. Any money above and beyond our goal will be applied to new models, and added components to the detachment packs AE-WWII: European Theater - going directly to the pledges.
Based on real WWII experiments and legends from throughout history, AE-WWII is unlike any WWII game you've played before.
The game uses an innovative army creation system based on troop types and training levels – not on calculations. The action-point based gameplay is fast and clean with alternating activations and a dynamic morale system that is simple to learn, strategically deep, tactically rich, and fun as hell.
Alliances and Nations In AE-WWII: Pick your army from the ranks of Allies, Axis, and Communist forces. Simply pick your Nation, and a combination of branches to round out your selection. You can mix and match within your Alliance.
The forces included in European Theater are:
American Infantry - US Army
American Experimental - Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)
American Occult - Office of Occult Research and Development American (OORD)
German Infantry - Wehrmacht
German Experimental - SD (Sonderbuero 13)
German Occult - SS (Shutzstaffel)
Russian Infantry - Red Army Russian
Russian Experimental - People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs 4th Special Department (NKVD)
In addition, the Russian Liberation Army (ROA) and British Ministry of Arcane Armaments (MoAA) can be used to join the fight alongside the other members of their Alliance.
Starter Packs & Detachment Packs:
While you will be able to buy all units and models individually after launch, for the Kickstarter, we are creating two new ways to get started with AE-WWII; Starter Packs (~MSRP $40 Post-Kickstarter) and Detachment Packs (~MSRP $90 Post-Kickstarter).
The nation Starter Packs give you a good sample of the game - enough to get playing right away.
The new detachment packs are loaded with ready-to-play branches - a full list all ready to fight (assembly and paint required).
How to Play:
Who is Blackball Games?
Chances are you’ve already played a game developed or designed in some capacity by Blackball Games. Founded by Duncan Huffman and Matthew Hope, Blackball is one of the fastest growing design and development firms in the table-top industry. With the founder's credit roots in popular games from Privateer Press and WOTC, and recent company design credits as varied as Relic Knights, Wrath of Kings, and Sedition Wars, Blackball continues to drive innovation and change the way games are played. In 2012, Blackball acquired the rights to AE:WWII and AE: Bounty from Darkson Designs. Matt Hope was the lead developer on both products for Darkson, and so folding the lines into Blackball Games was a great fit – essentially bringing the games home and rebooting them with an eye on streamlining and longevity.

Risks and challenges
With a project like this, production costs are the big limiting factor. We already have a great production partner here in the US (all of our models are made in the US) for our metal miniatures, and we already have the development and design of the new ruleset in-house. We also have some of the best artists and sculptors in the industry available to us. Getting the print run of the books and packaging to a level US companies can support is the goal here - we already have the print house selected, we simply need to get the pre-orders to match the minimums for the print run to make the cut. That's what this project is all about - that's where you, our fans and backers, come in.
The challenges facing us in getting the new edition of the game out on time are simple - 1) Production capital and facilities and 2) Art & resource management. If we miss either of these, delays can cost us weeks. Fortunately, we've got the right team in place for both of these challenges - and we've faced these challenges with projects before (across the industry - though never on Kickstarter). Though no one can foresee every circumstance - We have the experience and team to get a quality game into your hands as fast as possible. We expect to be fully published by April of 2013. We'll keep you fully informed of progress along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
