This is Latin for "United we stand, divided we fall." When we start thinking about the impact that our purchasing dollars have, we understand that every time we buy something, we are supporting jobs. American Jobs.

Only 3% of apparel sold in the US is manufactured here. 50 years ago, that was not the case. We want to make that happen again. We want to bring manufacturing back to the US.
Why is this important?
American craftsmanship is second to none. We have been dictating the trends in design and manufacturing since the industrial revolution. We want to support local communities. That is why we want to have jobs come back to our city of Tampa, Florida.
American mettle forges our style
We have been working on this project since March 17, 2008, when the recession hit. We understood that the best way to rebuild America was from the ground up. At the lowest point in modern history, we started working with vendors that were left dry by huge companies for overseas options in manufacturing. We brought to them this idea. They saw the vision and followed our lead. We wanted to create a brand that is as resilient as the American dream.

There are 3 ways YOU can help Black & Denim get funded:

The Selvedge (Selvage) is cut from fabric that has been proudly produced by Cone since 1896 and their White Oak plant since 1905. Their selvedge (selvage) denims are still woven on American Draper X3 fly shuttle looms from the 1940s. Fabrics woven on these vintage looms contain a depth and dimension that is completely unique. The vintage aspect of these looms combined with the fact that these machines sit on the original turn of the century wood floors, creates a rhythm and motion that is uniquely woven into these fabrics. They White Oak plant employs loyal denim experts, some of whom have run these same machines for as many as 50 years. They are committed to providing well crafted selvage fabrics, which combine American heritage with the latest advances in denim. We in turn commit ourselves to provide the best pair of denim Selvedge (Selvage) denim jeans right here in the US. (Each pair of pants has the legendary red line that correctly identifies them as true American selvedge (selvage) denim fabric.
Why is it called Selvedge (Selvage)?
The name derives itself from the two words "self edge".In the original shuttle weaving process, a small bobbin of yarn is carried inside a shuttle that travels back and forth across the loom. Since the yarn is not cut after each weft insertion, the tightly bound edge cannot unravel. If used as part of a garment, it will maintain its integrity throughout the life of the garment. This is in reference to the edge of the fabric, or "self edge".

Here is the full description of how we are going to utilize the funds in the event that the project gets funded. Black & Denim has done this before. When we created our men's collection, we had an initial investment. The funds are going to be used for the following:
1. To create a full women's collection for the Autumn/Winter 2013.
2. Acquire equipment needed in order to sell to department stores.
$5,500 - Women's Collection Cost
In order to create a full sample collection, we need to purchase fabric, test it, wash it and make sure it is safe. We have to create patterns, tech packs and spec sheets. Grade it. Wash it again. We also have to go through several rounds of fit tests. The folks that put this together are great people that trust our vision and leadership. We feel humbled to call them part of our team.
$4,150 - EDI Compliance
The only company that Macy*s will recognize bar codes from is called GS1 (http://www.gs1us.org/). In order for the initial setup and get our own code, we have to pay $3,200. That will get us 2,000 bar codes for our initial offering. After that, we have to pay $950.00 per year in order to get more bar codes every year. In order to sell to big department stores, we have to go through this major expense.
$8,350 - Rewards Cost
The Rewards. This is the reason why the project is special to us. We are passing along all our hard work and sacrifice so that you can enjoy a quality manufactured product that you can be proud off. We understand that in essence, you will donate what you can and have. We want to make sure that this reward is not only symbolic, but something that you can wear for the next 50 years and never go out of style. Because you believe in our cause. In return, we will make a commitment to create the following quality garments:
Denim Jeans with Cone Denim (Signature and Selvedge ), T-Shirts with Supima Cotton, Polo Shirts, Woven Shirts. For women, we will offer the sample basics, except denim jeans.
$2,000 - Kickstarter Fees
We are grateful for the opportunity to place our project on Kickstarter. The fee is 5% or $1,000. Amazon Services, which is how Kickstarter collect the funds for campaigns charges a service fee between 3% to 5%. We are anticipating that the fee will be on the high end at $1,000.
$20,000 - Total & Funding Goal
The expenses are the reflection of our dedication to transparency and quality manufacturing. We have anticipated that in order to make this dream a reality, we have to make sacrifices. Our hard work will pay off. We thank you for your support.

If you think the video looks professional, we have done our job! The video is the effort of our founders, interns and partners. We did not pay anyone to be part of the video, nor did we purchase expensive equipment. Risks and challenges
We understand the risks. We know that sometimes there are obstacles or problems in production mode. We do not anticipate any challenges if our project gets fully funded. If there are problems, we can only rely on our credentials to resolve them and make sure we continue to create great products:
Roberto is a seasoned Accounting and Finance professional (7 years). He is handling the contracts, logistics and all around money. He has lined up a group of seasoned vendors that understand the time crunch and are committed to quality and craftsmanship.
Chris is a Fashion Design and Production specialist (7 years). His area of expertise comes from the garment and apparel industry. He has made sure the blueprints and designs are 100% ready to go. If there are production inquiries, he will be available.
Luis is an IT/IS professional (7 years). He has made sure the team has the best streamlined and efficient fulfillment line. We want to make sure the project gets out by the date that it was promised. He has procured a production and inventory solution to keep track of everything.
