Born out of a reaction against traditional art fairs, Black Market is the culmination of a desire to experience live entertainment in the midst of a commercial art space. By simultaneously adopting and departing from art fair conventions, we believe in "taking the best and leaving the rest" — characterizing Black Market as a hybrid model of musical performance and purchasable artist commodities.
Premiering at a secret location on Wall Street, Black Market focuses on deconstructing and reinventing current themes central to hip hop — such as finance, determination, and celebration — in the context of contemporary art. We believe there's no better place to launch this platform than just steps away from the New York Stock Exchange.
The artists selected for Black Market are defined by their consistency in pushing the aesthetics of rap in unprecedented directions. They include:
-Devin KKenny is an artist utilizing interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to gnosticism and popular culture.
Nandi Loaf is "the most important artist of the 21st century"
Gazr explores how voices are appropriated, amplified, and/or suppressed in our society through rap and live performance. On the occasion of Black Market, he will be releasing a mixtape, entitled "Life Does Not Live."
Prada Mane is a video artist, producer and rapper recognized for his distinctive sound associated with the sad rap movement. On the occasion of Black Market, he will be releasing his new mixtape, entitled 'Prada Debt'.
Los Angeles-based artist Yung Jake utilizes video, social media and the internet to create emoji-based art, among other projects. He has also turned to hip hop/rap out of his frustration with the art world's inability to deal with race.
Given the scope of our vision and the stature of the artists involved, we need your help to make this event materialize on Friday, May 15th. There are many facets of production that require more funds than we can afford on our own. These include:
+Projection Mapping Specialist
We hope that our determination to turn this vision into a reality has excited you as much as it has filled us with inspiration.
Thank you for supporting Black Market!
