This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sat, December 8 2018 3:47 PM UTC +00:00.
Hello there travelers! Welcome to my humble shop, I'm BJ Hypes, but you may know me as the Ridiculous Blacksmith.
I make silly items for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5e, things such as Baskets of Endless Breadsticks, Monkey Wrenches, and the coveted Grenade of Many Things...
I love making these silly items and I've received an overwhelming amount of requests for a physical Deck of Silly Things, so I put together this Kickstarter! The funds raised from this will help support my website (where you can find all these cards) as well as the other free content I create.
I spend a minimum of two to three hours on every card from conceptualization to proofreading to Photoshop and graphic design (but often much much more). Hearing how Game Masters have used these silly items to bring players out of their shells or how they've brought a few laughs to a table makes it all worth it.
The Deck of Silly Things
The Deck of Silly Things contains 50 unique items that range from absurd to bizarre. Here's one of my favorites, the Boots Made For Walking:
If you want to see the complete Deck of Silly Things, you can find them all on my website at www.bjhypes.com! Or if you'd rather be surprised, you can get a good sense of what I think is funny by checking out a free one-off I've published called Camp Murder (www.bjhypes.com/campmurder). In this adventure, you play as camp counselors trying to survive a 90s slasher film, but I'm getting off track...
While designing the Deck of Silly Things, I've already gone through a few prototypes of the cards before getting versions that I think look really cool:
The cards are the largest available, measuring a mighty 3.5 x 5.5 inches. As seen in the images / video, the font is small, but readable, measuring about 8pts. These smaller cards have mostly the same text as their larger counterparts, however some have been altered to make all the text fit.
I'm partnering with The Game Crafter who I believe are the best fit for this project because in my research (1) they specifically focus on games more than any other company (2) they delivered quality prototypes ahead of schedule and (3) they had fast customer service and answered all my questions. These cards are made from high quality stock and have both a UV coating and a linen finish.
Right now, you can go to my website and download both a full color PDF and the printable card PDF for all 50 cards so you can print four to a page and save a couple trees. Below are some samples of what the printable files look like:
While I've been repeatedly told it's not a smart business move, making this content free is non-negotiable. When I first started playing D&D, I did not have the money to spend on games and if it wasn't for the immense amount of free content out there, I wouldn't have continued playing. This is my very small way of giving back. Everyone deserves to be silly!
If funding for this campaign is successful, the decks will be ordered as soon as I receive the funds. Unfortunately, I do not have the income to order these cards before receiving funds, but I am hopeful to receive materials by December 2018 / January 2019 and ship them out as soon as humanly possible, even if that means taking time off work! If addresses are written correctly, everyone should receive their Decks by February 2018 at the latest!
I would not have developed the confidence to post these silly items if it wasn't for the supportive community over at r/dnd. They have been forever encouraging and warm in a world where online communities often get a bad wrap. They gave feedback, they found my spelling mistakes, they made jokes that were often much funnier than my own, and most importantly they made a lot of effort and long hours worth it. The upvotes were nice, the kind words kept me going!
To the many individuals who regularly commented and encouraged, you know who you are, and you have my thanks! :)
Risks and challenges
The goal of $1,600 is incredibly steep! To meet this we have to sell 50 decks which is no small task, but I can then order cards at wholesale price. If we don't meet this goal, I will set up a print-on-demand service for The Deck of Silly Things, which unfortunately will make it a little more expensive, but everyone who wants a physical deck can still order one!
Please make sure to input your address correctly! If packages are returned I lose money on the order and that comes out of my pocket. In the event of zombie apocalypse, please allow an extra four to six years for door-to-door delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
