Like many of you, I love NES music.
For the past few years I have been producing albums of metal arrangements for entire NES soundtracks. The goal is not to pick and choose songs but to remake every piece of music from each game and keep them as true to the originals as possible--with some exceptions, but we'll get to that!
I go through and figure the exact tempos for the pieces, which usually means narrowing it down to the hundredth of a beat per minute. I then track the drums, guitars and bass, then mix and master. There are two guitars and one bass track per piece, in keeping true to the format of the NES music--one sine wave goes to the left guitar, the other to the right guitar and the triangle to the bass. I stay as true to the original music as possible, taking very few liberties with the music. Except for the drums.
Being a drummer first and foremost, I take several liberties with the drum parts. One of the reasons for this is that a lot of pieces feature very limited to no percussion. Another reason is that with music like this that loops over and over, the guitars and bass can stay the same through every repetition while changing the drums from phrase to phrase can really change the overall feel of the music.
So far I have completed an album for Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Contra, Double Dragon and Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos. You can check out the first three of these on my Bandcamp page, dustyzahrt.bandcamp.com, and a video that I put together of Castlevania with my arrangement used as the background music:
I would love to continue to produce these albums but the computer that I used for recording (a Dell XPS from 2008) has finally died. This Kickstarter is to raise the funds to build a new PC so I can continue to produce these albums, but also to see which games that you, as backers and fellow lovers of NES music, would most love to hear.
Risks and challenges
If this campaign is successfully funded, I have allowed myself two months to arrange and record the albums chosen by the highest two tiers of backers, as well as the highest-voted one. This is potentially a whopping 16 albums to knock out in two months. I know this may seem overly ambitious but I have been playing drums for 20 years, guitar for 17 years and recording for 15, and I am very confident that I can not only get it done, but give each one the focus and attention that it deserves.
I will give backers up-to-date progress as I complete each step of each album and you will know immediately if there is ever a hiccup in the progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
