Ngaio is a gleefully manic amateur artist with her own deranged, surreal and incredibly inappropriate variety show called ‘Trying My Best’; a children’s show that should never be seen by any children, ever. As the host, Ngaio corrals her neurotic friends and puppet sidekicks through an increasingly bizarre gauntlet of variety segments. Throughout the season, more hints about the characters' pasts and presents are revealed, and it gradually becomes apparent that things are not quite right in the world outside the studio.
Blending art, comedy, musical numbers and game show elements with a hyper-colourful homemade aesthetic, ‘Trying My Best’ is a joyously deranged journey into a very warped mind.
‘Trying My Best’ will be a 9 part series of short videos streamed for free online.
We’ve written the show to take advantage of the flexibility the internet offers; earlier episodes will be short and snappy to attract new audiences, but become longer, darker and more complex over the course of the season. The scripts are fully complete (our script reviewers gave extremely positive feedback!) and we are already in the early days of pre-production.
Just as with our hit Comedy Festival show Slutmonster and Friends, the visuals of ‘Trying My Best’ (sets, costumes, puppets, etc) will have a homemade, colourful and amateur-but-attractive aesthetic; think Tim Burton meets Salvador Dali as reimagined by a perverted toddler. We will be working with an experienced crew to deliver high quality production values (cinematography, lighting, audio, etc).

Our Mission Statement
We aim to create content that is sex positive, queer-friendly and feminist in its leanings without being preachy, disingenuous or – worst of all – boring. We are drawn to subjects which are considered taboo (kink, sex, violence, deviance) and attempt to explore these topics in a joyfully irreverent and sometimes downright stupid fashion. We whole-heartedly embrace a kitsch, lowbrow, and gloriously glittery aesthetic. We are interested in creating and celebrating characters who exist on the fringes of the socially acceptable, characters that resonate with the freak, idiot and pervert in each and every one of us.
Also we like jokes and boobs.
Why We Need Your Donations
We want to make a show that sets a new standard in quality and strangeness for online comedy, however that is going to take precious dollah dollah bills y’all. We have already been pouring every moment of our spare time and own funds into this project to get it to this point, but we need your help to get it to your screens.
Why You Should Contribute
The internet gives us complete artistic freedom, and the ability to make the kinds of content that would never be funded for TV. By supporting this show you are helping us make something different and surprising, and help make a mark in the landscape of comedy.
Our run at the Melbourne Fringe and Comedy Festivals was hugely successful for us, in terms of the critical reaction, ticket sales and industry recognition. We have been making similar content for the web for years, and have put together an experienced crew with the skillset to make ‘Trying My Best’ a reality. With your help, we can make something ambitious and outrageous.
Because we love you for loving us, we have some wicked sweet rewards on offer! Use this handy dandy grid to get an idea of what your Reward Package comes bundled with!
Risks and challenges
As this project is ambitious in its scope, even when we make our target goal we will be working with a tight budget. With every creative project, pragmatism sometimes has to win over idealism, and we may need to compromise on some of our ambitions. However, generally speaking, where money is an issue we will err on investing extra time rather than letting the quality drop (e.g. by spending more time rehearsing we can cut down the time we need in the film studio).
When working on a project of this scope, the potential setbacks we can anticipate are things such as last-minute film studio cancellations, essential crew members becoming ill or all the set pieces being accidentally melted in a giant bucket of acid. However, having worked for many years in the creative arts, we are used to such setbacks (particularly the bucket of acid) and have become expert at finding ways to work past the challenges.
We also may end up sinking too many resources into the creation of the Digital Chocolate Frog.
No matter the set-backs, we will make ‘Trying My Best’ a reality, however the more finances we are able to raise, the sooner we will be able to deliver it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
